Cool project! For a general DC motor you are actually increasing the power going through it by the square of the voltage, so multiplying the voltage by four, means 16 times the power (doesn't necesarily translate to 16x the speed though :P). Beyond that, I'm going to be a massive safety nanny: PLEASE for the love of everything cover up that ring on your finger when fiddling around with lithium ion cells (or any current capable source). Electrothermal ring burns are a thing and usually end up with an amputated finger.

You could have at least also spent like $2 on a set of XT60 connectors, surely? Or maybe its bigger XT90 brother. Your soldering technique was mostly fine, though. I wouldn't have soldered the terminals while those modular bits were connected to the batteries in case the heat from the soldering iron went through to the cells and damaged them, and you probably could have used a high-mass soldering iron, but the "Heat up the wire, then add solder to the wire" method is how you're actually supposed to solder stuff.

Haha, this is one of my LTT favorites! First, I like Linus' innocence towards Lithium batteries. I wired up a lithium battery pack in my master's thesis (it was about 10 times the size of this battery though), and it made me quite nervous to know that connecting a wire incorrectly might vaporize the wire in my hands ;) . I triple checked that a conenction is correct before I made it, and Linus is just like "let's throw this thing together"! Second, I love seeing how much fun Linus has riding those little toy cars.

What could go wrong? Well with Linus it's more like what will go right.

As an electronics engineer who's built multiple small electric vehicles, this entire video made me uncomfortable

Finally Linus buy an fully electric car...

When modifying an Electric Vehicle for more performance. Overvolting the original motors, is easy. What's a concern, is if the motors are overheating from the higher voltage. So to prevent the motors from overheating, which can melt/burn winding insulation, and demagnetize magnets it may use. You will need to limit the current, with something like a Cycle Analyst, or a programmable motor controller. And if you're using brushed motors, instead of Brushless, then you also need to worry about arcing. With electric motors. Higher voltage means higher top-speed and rate of acceleration. Setting higher current limits, means more torque, but you will drain the batteries quicker, and you will be more likely to damage the motor & battery from overheating. If using a bushed motor, you're limited by the voltage you can use, because arcing will become more of an issue. If using or switching to a Brushless motor & controller. Then not only can you use it in rain (with electrical connections sealed and packed with Dielectric Grease, so they too can handle moisture), but if you also control temperature with current limits, and maybe making a great cooling system. Then the only limitation to voltage, is the motor spinning so fast, that it starts damaging itself, from centrifugal forces, and the bearings may have issues too. But if you set your voltage or top-speed limit before that point, then you should be ok. And personally, I recommend making an Ultra-Capacitor pack, to wire in parallel with the batteries, to make things easier on the batteries. Like Brake-Regeneration, and the spike in load, when accelerating hard from a dead stop, especially when going uphill.

Linus I did something like that about 15 years ago and had to watch as my 6-7 year old Daughter drove through the fence in the backyard.... After her mom beat me about the face and head she was still laughing with a smile from ear to ear .. Kind a like you.....

Couple tips Linus. Ive done overvolting on a few of these things, and my daughter loves them. Get some heatsinks for those motors, you can find them for RC cars (as well as the same size replacement motors, but with a bit more longevity). Maybe a fan, you should be able to find a 12v fan laying around ;-) Upgrade the wiring when you have time. If you have terrain around you, they will get hot. If you have sounds to run, a buck board will take care of those nicely. Oh, and an easy conversion is to use a battery pack from 18 or 20v tools. My girl's 4 wheeler runs on craftsman packs (since I have a lot of those around) and we get about 3 laps of the neighborhood out of each one, or about 15 min, before it has to cool down and be re-charged, and swapped out with a new pack.

My dad did this to our trike in the late 80's (different batteries mind). Motors lasted surprisingly well as long as you stopped for a bit when they got too hot. He then replaced them with something better too at which point it wouldn't even move as the plastic wheels just slipped and spun on the spot. So he rubberised the wheels. Then it went so fast mum had to step in and have him dial it back before he could think of any way to make it even more dangerous for an 8 year old :)
