I make most of our soap just for us and a few close friends and family members. They're always so impressed that I do this! You know because of the lye. Uhhhh, yeah, just pay attention and no kids around. I make hot process and cold process depending on how soon I need more soap! I'm a potter too, so I make a few soap dishes for gifts with soap. A potter needs lots of soap! LOL

Hi. I am a beginner of soap making. I like your videos. You are down to earth with your advices. Let me ask you a question. Can I use hydrogenated oil with coconut oil? If so how much ratio can I mix these two oils? I could not find lye calculation for hydrogenated oil. I live in India. Can you please help me out? Thanks in advance.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 3 года назад
You can use hydrogenated oils but you have to know what's in it in order to calculate the recipe. Crisco brand is one example. Some lye calculators actually have any entry for that brand. It's tough using them because we don't know exactly what's in them and how much of each oil since they're usually a combination of oils.

@iwannaapple7190
@iwannaapple7190 3 года назад
Dunno if this helps anyone with their mold but here goes- CO 14% PO 9.4% SF 9.4% OO 61.2% And just in case someone wants the same percentage of fragrance: 6% of (oils + soy flakes) I imagine water amount is optional so I didn't include that percentage although it will affect the amount of soap that is produced.. I'm assuming soy flakes is wax? What does the wax do? Just a quick note. Canola oil is not included. It is possible to have two different saponification values which results in two different lye values. A very popular soapers oil lists these two oils as .133 for canola and .135 for olive oil. Haven't calculated it yet for a safe lye discount where this difference wouldn't matter. I'm assuming the normal 5% would suffice?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 3 года назад
So.. the water amount doesn't really affect the amount of soap produced. It eventually evaporates out. It's based on your base oils. The soy wax is basically just hydrogenated soy bean oil. The canola and olive oils are so close in properties that it's almost an exact swap for water and lye amounts.
@iwannaapple7190
@iwannaapple7190 3 года назад
@@unclejonssoap Yes they are close. But water will affect how much is left in your bowl. And for a weird pondering turn your head sideways moment I'll include this weird oddity. I used to record the weights and water amounts of all my soap. It took a while but I started noticing a weird trend. That trend was that water was evaporating quicker out of batches with more water then batches with less water. In other words, batches with more water was curing at a faster rate! HOWEVER, that was only the case for batches with more water that had been stick blended longer. Less water means you don't blend quite as much because of thickrning at a quicker rate. Common sense used to tell me that less water cured faster. That common sense went out the door. And you probably meant water amount was based on lye amount and not your oils. While I'm on the subject of water with a break here is a question that is true. Can you think of a scenario where water amount affects your lye amount? Which it does and will but how? It is something that is taken for granted by many soapers but many soapers have not made their own lye calculator.

@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 года назад
18.5oz is what the recipe calls for and that puts the water volume at 38%. I take a little off since I'm comfortable with discounting water. Running it through the lye calculator will help you to see how things work and learn how to tweak for your own recipes.
@gwchambers
@gwchambers 4 года назад
Hello. First off, John I am not trying to step on your toes here just trying to help someone out.....TYPICALLY the water amount from 17 oz to 18.5 oz would not really matter just as long as you were right in weighing out the lye. In this reaction, the water is just a carrier to get the lye dissolved, the lye is what drives the reaction. That being said, if you have more water it will slow down the amount of time to trace, and will also increase the cure time because that additional water will require additional time to evaporate. if you have less water, the opposite will occur. Less cure time and faster trace. Please note, with less water, the concentration of the lye water will increase and thus make it more dangerous to handle if you come in contact with it.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 года назад
I agr6with some of what you said but the concentration really doesn6increase by enough to make it worth worryi6about in this instance. Also, I've found that more water can help slow down trace but not always. In this soap from today,it would have traced just as fast unfortunately...lol. But I do agree that they should check the recipe with the lye calculator so they can always be sure the person giving the recipe is correct and they can also learn how to use the calculator. I need to do a video about the lye to oil ratio. Because you're right... People often confuse the lye / water/ oil ratios and super fat.
