DIY MAGNETIC Buildings: Modular Dungeon Walls for D&D

An easy to follow DIY tutorial for magnetic modular dungeon walls that you can use to make full buildings for D&D. You can take them apart and reassemble them as a totally different building!
These pieces can be used as part of a dungeon tile system too, allowing you to show walls and accessories, but with the freedom to make cutaway scenes for easy player access.
There are modular doors and windows, that are removable, replaceable with different designs and can also be used in some clever ways to add more to a dungeon.
Then of course there are the modular magnetic columns which are probably some of the most flexible pieces I've made so far…
Finally the system includes interior wall pieces that allow you to make almost any shape of rooms or corridors you could want.

I'm building the interior walls right now. I was able to build a jig out of foam by cutting a 3" square diagonally And gluing a top on to get the 45degree angle. If your peice is exactly 1/2" you can set the proxxon at just over 1/8th and it will cut it perfectly. Love your vids Matt keep em coming

Honestly, it's because I originally designed the system with 2 magnets/connections per side, and then realised one would do fine! You absolutely could place the side magnets in the middle, however what that might make problematic is if you wanted to invert certain walls and place them upside down. Currently you can just about manage that because when inverted the magnets don't align, but if they were in the middle... Not so much. There isn't too much of a use for that so far though, beyond showing double height windows :) I didn't want to rule out using it for future systems though, hence the keeping them at the top instead of the middle!

Ah, the video I've been most looking forward to! Twenty years or so ago, I ran a game store with space for tabletop RP and miniatures battles. Mind you, I wasn't an advanced crafter, so I did most of my work in styrofoam. I made a two-dimensional table grid of reversible squares in 6 and 12 inch sizes, and applied flexible strip magnets (like refrigerator magnets) to the corner edges to create something of the same effect that you get with your nicer magnets. I didn't do much with actual buildings, preferring to sculpt boulders and hills (smoothed with sandpaper) and made a royal mess of foam bits every time I did. Still, it was fun to make cheap, easy terrain, and these videos are stirring up that old itch, again. 17:48 Those jewelry bits you use for the door pulls could do double duty with chains attached as pairs of manacles for dungeon dressing. Also, another building type which would be fun to craft would be Tudor-style half-timber, the white wattle-and-daub sections simple to make and paint, and the timbers perhaps a removable accessory. =^[.]^=

Even if crafters have completely separate terrain already, the mountain/cave peices for 3d encounters are absolutely amazing. I've seen nothing like it and the results speak for themselves. These look fantastic! I've not worked with foam before, but you make it look easy! However, starting out looks a bit expensive! The accessories on the walls look great, I especially love those small windows! I'd love to see the looks on my player's faces if I pulled something like this out to play with! Thanks! You really don't need much to start out, a hot wire table is amazing for making things faster and with precision but you can get started with just a craft knife, some glue, paint and patience :) The foam is pretty cheap too, you can pick it up in building supply stores, there's loads of info on all this stuff in my equipment list site in the description. I'm actually stupidly proud of those windows, I ended up doing it that way because it was just after lockdown and I wasn't sure other supplies would arrive on time but it turned out great and so detailed! There's going to be a ton more wall accessories in future videos too, I've got loads planned there so keep an eye out for those...

Matt, you are my greatest inspiration for crafting! I absolutely LOVE the modularity of this system, and the myriad ways of using the individual tiles, blocks, and accessories. Thank you so very much! And about inspiration... I'd like to support you by sharing an idea with you to: - get rid of ALL the card slots (even for upper floors in buildings), and - save a TON on magnets for floor tiles, even though you still get all the benefits of magnets! Please contact me if you are interested, because I don't 'do' Patreon, and I think that this idea could make a very good video for you. So I might support you in that manner. :) Here is a small innovation of mine that I *will* share publicly: instead of using a cocktail stick with blu-tack, take the handle of a plastic cotton bud and cut a slot into it at about 1 mm from the end. Put a tiny magnet in there, and seal it (with hot glue, for example). You can also use hot glue to make the end of the tool flat and a bit wider if preferred. I made two of these little tools with different color handles; one for North facing magnets, and one for South facing magnets. These work great for always getting the polarity correct! If you need help finding XPS foam, I don't have any specific sources in Spain but a good place to find it is usually building/construction supply stores, or failing that, some online model shops stock it, and failing that, ebay sometimes works :) Oh, and hello from the UK!

Honestly I find the key is keeping a finished reference piece nearby. Tgis allows you to quickly test each magnet is the right way around before attaching to your little blu tac stick. Once it's on there, it basically remembers the right way for you so you can focus on other things like the glue gun :)

@@gorkensgork Not in full, though it's fairly straightforward. If you look at 9:00 in the video, you can see I've prepared a magnet the right way around for placing in the hole on my blu tac stic, it's sitting on the desk while I use the glue gun. if you look behind that, you can see some completed walls that I'm using as a reference for which way round each magnet should go, immediately before attaching it to my blu tac stick. I find attaching the magnet you're placing to the reference piece, and then putting the blu tac stick on it as you pull away is the easiest way to make sure it's going to go in the right way :) If it ends up going wrong once or twice don't worry about it! You can melt the hot glue again by poking it with the nozzle and pluck the magnet out with that cocktail stick. Then its easy enough to try again. Once you've tried it once or twice you get the hang of it pretty quickly :)

Nice to see. Cool that you also figured out the 45° inside walls. Just a short question: i think about adding magnets to a build for the first time, since the neodym magnets are pretty strong i would like to know if they ever ripped out of one of your tiles when you separate them?

It's actually pretty easy to avoid by putting a thin layer of hot glue over the magnet once it's glued in place. I usually glue them a fraction deeper than the surface of the piece so there's room for the top layer of hot glue. The distance weakens the pull of the magnets just enough to make them hold well but remove easily. The extra glue holding them in place doesn't hurt either ;)

Amazing stuff. Only a few vids in and I am sold on your system. I have looked at Wyloch's and BMC's but I like this better! WOW!!! This stuff is amazing! Could this be done with something other than foam though? And maybe incorporate Wylochs 1-1/4 inch grids (guess that would just be upscaling it)?

Thanks! It can be partially done with materials other than foam, though the accessory slots and interior walls rely on the foam somewhat to hold them tight as it has a slightly elastic surface that pushes back out and holds them in place gently but firmly. Plus it's generally a lot quicker, easier and often even cheaper to use (I find!) Can you not access foam? I would highly recommend trying it if you can get your hands on it, it's a far more flexible material than card, but everything has its place - I use a range of materials in my builds depending on what's best for the job. As for the 2.5 grid, is this to work with tiles you already have? Theoretically it can be done by up scaling, though bear in mind a lot of measurements will need to change. On the other hand if you do this although it will work with existing tiles, it might be harder to incorporate some of my future systems (I've got a lot of cool compatible stuff planned!) If you need a hand getting into using foam just let me know, I'm more than happy to advise :)

@@RPArchiveOfficial biggest problem with foam for me is that it's expensive (I live in Norway, everything is expensive here) and I don't have a cutter (also no room for one). as for the 2.5 grid, I just like the scale better (mostly for the reasons Wyloch explains) but also cause it looks a bit more realistic, and I would use stuff like this for 28mm games (such as 40k) in addition to D&D/Pathfinder.

Ah, makes sense. As I say you can make it from other materials in theory, it's just certain behaviors of the foam make features like the accessory slots work better. If you can get magnets in and punch holes for cocktail sticks, card might work just fine. IF I were to try it, my first thought would maybe be to use corrugated card as the core, as its soft enough to punch accessory slots in and might be able to hold them in a similar way. I'd then layer cereal card over each side in whatever pattern you would use to represent stone, as that would give a nicer looking surface while still being thin enough to easily punch the through. As for the 2.5, if you make all the walls and floor tiles 2.5 instead of 3, keep the wall height as 2 and the column width as 0.5, in theory that should still work!

This is really great. Any tips on a quick and easy way to determine north/south on the magnets? Do you just test each new one against one you’ve already labeled or what?

Pretty much as you say, but before placing them on I stack say, 10-20 magnets on the top magnet of a wall, so I know north is on top, and then 10-20 on an upside down wall, so I know South is on top. I then use a cocktail stick with a blob of blu tac on and grab a magnet from whichever stack is more convenient, sticking the side (north/south) I need pointing out of the wall onto the blu tac. So if I was doing a magnet that needed to face north, I'd pluck one from the pile with South facing up, as this left the south Pole facing my fingers, and the North exposed to stick to the blu tac. Then when I finished putting some hot glue in the hole, I can grab the cocktail stick and the magnet is ready to just push in, already the right way around :) This is a lot quicker and easier to do than it is to explain!

Finally committing to retrofitting my dungeon tile set to fit your design plans! Was wondering, i havent been able to tell if you still add the card connector slots on the bottom of your more recent builds. I do not, pure magnets like in the getting started video There is a more advanced magnetic version of the floor tiles on patreon as a bonus video, just so you know before starting :) it's not essential but it is better!

(I made a lot of his cardboard tiles this year, and must admit foam tiles aesthetics is better) You said "difficult to take floors off securely ". Are tiles too hard/easy to separate this way ? Are this magnets connections ok for upper floors ? (I was wondering if I was going to use magnets, you convinced me not to do so !)

Oh I absolutely agree, foam aesthetics are lot nicer than cardboard. Basically the problem with magnetic floors is that when they hold together perfectly well while standing in place, when you try and pick up an entire floor to remove, the floor is almost as likely to come apart halfway across the floor (and collapse the whole thing) as it is along the walls as intended! Theoretically this might be fixable with stronger magnets, but stronger magnets are also far more likely to tear out of foam while seperating them... It's a complex problem, and probably one that would make the system even more niche even if I managed it solve it - which is a shame.

How many floors and walls would you build to make a starter set? And what about 6x6 or 9x9?

As a general rule, I'm trying to build a n equal number of walls, windowframes and floors, which I think should give the best balance without having tons of one piece left over. To get started for a 6x6 2 floor building you'd need 12 floor tiles, 10 windows, 9 walls and 1 door. Basically each 6x6 floor is 6 floors and 10 walls or windows. I found enough to build a 6x6 was a good starting amount, though I built double that pretty quickly to let me build bigger dungeons :) Oh and I'd suggest making the updated roof tiles from the modular roof video, rather than the ones in the stable video - you can still make them thatch if you wanted to :)

Can you only do the magnet connection system for 3x3 tiles? Or can you do other dimensions and if so, how? For example a 2x4 tile for hallways where would you put the magnets for the most modularity?

I use 2x3,and basically just imagine a 3x3 tile that you cut 1" off and put the magnets on the new edge in the same places :)

Go for it :) they aren't a massive problem in the UK 😅 You'll want to make sure the magnets are strong enough to make the floors stable though - that and a few other things like cost are the reason I stayed with the card tabs...

Question for you- I see that you are still using the chip board tabs on the magnet pieces you're showing. Is this for versatility or because the magnets don't hold strong enough? I'm making a huge batch of these now and I ordered a few hundred of the magnets from your page, just curious if it will be enough as I don't plan on adding the tabs. Thanks! I'm still using the chipboard here mainly because I haven't upgraded it to magnets yet, I do that in the cottage video and talk there about why I hadn't until then - basically it's about stability for upper floors on larger buildings, but you can work around that by just having card tabs additionally for those specific tiles IF you ever did a build that big :)

Have you considered using the 1.25” scale? Would the 1.25” scale make things a lot more complicated? (Are all your walls 2 stairs?) Very nice work. I’m really looking forward to seeing all your other ideas for the system.

Thanks, I've got a lot planned :) Honestly I hadn't, mainly because the main purpose of the 1.25 scale was to incorporate walls into the tiles, but I wanted them seperate so the system could do more and be stored more easily :)

RP Archive I missed you replied so quickly, I was just thinking about the minis and small corridors. I know you briefly mentioned in one video, but i couldn’t find it again. I suppose you could make some thinner or half walls. I had done some moduar palisade walls on the 1’ scale. I was working on a better system for it, but was planning on using the 1.25” scale. I think I will change it back to better work with your system.

Maybe I'm just dense or maybe I've missed it in the videos but I'm about to embark on my first set of floor and wall tiles and for the life of me I can't figure out where and what orientation to put the magnets. The info seems to be scattered across a couple videos, and I think you change the locations in later videos? Is there a clear diagram or place you can link me on where to put the magnets in each piece and with North or South facing? Will hop on Patreon this week and subscribe, loving the system so far.

Happy to help Mike, and thank you so much for the (impending) support! The magnets positions are: Floor tiles - North on the right and south on the left of each side, 1/2" from the outer edge on each side, and 1/4" from the top/bottom vertically. Basically if you've cut a 1" grid into it, the magnets go right in the middle of the left and right 1" rectangle on each side :) Wall tiles: Pick a side to be the inside and put two magnets at the bottom, half inch from the edge and 1/4" from the bottom on each side (so they line up perfectly with floor tiles). These you want to be north on the right and south on the left when looking at them - just like the floor tiles. For the rest, flip the tile and look at the 'outside', and and put a North on the right, south on the left into the right and left outer edges (the ones that connect to the wall next to them and are hidden), 1/4" from the top. Then, still looking at the outer edge, put a North in the top and south in the bottom (where the tiles will stack up on top of each other). I did these 5/16" from the left edge. This is the general rule I follow with my magnets, North up/right, south down/left - though obviously this doesn't work for all situations! I know this is an old video, but I have just found you. Do you have the measurements you use for the wall and roof pieces as I keep missing it (pref in cm's as my brain doesn't work on imperial measurements)? I must have watched this video at least 10 times to try and catch it!

Wall pieces are 3"x2"x1/2", metric conversion chart is in the description (I think? Definitely in all later videos) I use imperial because it divides better in smaller measurements, it's far harder to get 1/4 of a cm :)

Are you set on using card tabs for affordability or have you not seen my magnetic updates to the system? :) Check out my getting started video for how to do it with magnets ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iwT5fy3nBPQ.html If you're set on tabs though, if it wont squash you can cut away the middle channels with a hot wire (see my caverns video) but it still needs squashing in the corners, so you might need to melt it down with the side of a glue gun? Possibly? Or just use magnets :)

It won't unfortunately, they're a lot weaker. My best advice here would be use larger n35 magnets, maybe 4x2 or even 6x2. You'll need to do some experiments to see what a nice balance between 'strong enough hold' and 'difficult to take apart/take floors apart/magnets tearing out of the foam' :)

Yep, it's stable enough as long as the magnets aren't buried too deep in the floor tile, so are basically flush. If you made WIDE, LONG buildings (like 3 tiles long AND 3 tiles wide at least), then it wouldn't be as stable. But buildings like that are rare, and usually have interior walls or columns to hold up the floor 😄

Hey Me again with more questions. So i got most stuff figured out now. I made a tile and it looks feels and works nice. I put a magnetic plate in it so everything ontop of the tile as long as it has magnets will stay nicely ontop of it with some support. I put 2 magnets on each side of the tile so i could magnetise them togheter. What i dont understand is that i did as instructed. I sorted all magnets in to a S and N. I made sure which side was what. Then i put the N on the right and the S on the left on each side. And yet some sides stick perfectly and other sides still seem to have issues with polarity and push against one another. I thought first it was the plate but the plate in itself is not magnetic and non of the magnets on the sides are touching the plate. I also with my glue gun can't seal the magnets off so i used a strong glue on the inside of the magnet hole then pushed the magnets on so i techically got magnet against magnet so the strenght should not be an issue. TLDR: If i used your N and S and checked all magnets but still they seem to have polarity issues. Like 2-3 sides always stick good but 1 or two sides on some of the tiles seem to have horrible issues with eachother.

Ok there's good news and bad news: The good news - you probably did exactly as shown, laid them out north and south and absolutely thought you put the right ones in the right places... The bad news - sometimes this doesn't matter. We're all human, we all make mistakes, especially when making lots of tiles at once, and especially with minor distractions like a good bit in an otherwise chill tv show... I've made these mistakes, and ended up with tiles just as you describe them. All you can do is heat them up with the glue gun nozzle to melt the hot glue, pull them out with a spare magnet stick, and glue them back in again. Luckily, because there's only a few, your focus will be stronger and you shouldn't have the problem again... At least that's what I find 😄 If you used stronger, non hot glue... You may need to cut them out carefully with an xacto knife, and add them back in to the hole. Id recommend using a spare finished tile with the edge covered by a strip of parchment paper to make sure the magnet ends up in the middle of the hole, without gluing the tiles together (if you get what I mean!) Hope this helps!

For floor tiles, the upgrade was initially 2 sides only and done in the caverns video, then expanded to all sides in the cottage video. The cottage video also shows the upgrading of the wall tiles to have magnets to connect with the floors, but this is is shown more clearly in the getting started video. Basically the cottage video shows it SPECIFICALLY for cottage walls, which are quite different to stone ones :) Let me know if you have any questions!

This is nice looking, but the problem with full 3d has always been the difficulty of getting into the walls. One and Two inch hallways are kind of difficult to move stuff in, and you won't always be using large open spaces. I will say that for the large open stuff, your tiles area very nice.

A lot of it is to do with glue gun nozzle size for making the hole, if the magnet is floating in glue it'll pop out much easier. Check out the glue gun section of the equipment list in the description :)

What glue gun are you using? I recommend the surebonder I do in the equipment list in the description because it has a 2mm nozzle and is somewhat lower temperature (as its wireless) so its ideal for poking a perfect sized tight hole which really helps the 3x2 If you still have trouble, I recommend pushing the magnet ever so slightly further in and doing a 1mm layer of hot glue on top - this is what I do with troublesome ones!

@@RPArchiveOfficial So the problem might actually be the glue gun itself. I checked the surebonder on amazon but due to the split in EU/US/GB surebonders were a bit hard to come by. My glue gun is made in my own country and got a good review score so i thought it would suffice. One more quick question. Do you think that a low temp glue gun is neccessary? I might be answering my own question but allow me to explain, i manage to melt the foam with a regular glue gun but actually started to finesse a bit on my glue techniques by squeezing out some glue then waiting a second and then applying it. Would a low temp gun prevent melting with instant applications?

Yeah your glue gun is too hot. You want a low powered one (20 watt, 230 degrees ish), not a high power one :)

Do you think the bosch glue gun or perhaps even a glue pen would do the trick? It is stated that they have a temp of 200 degrees max (the bosch glue gun) and 170 degrees max (the bosch glue pen). These are the best options i could find that was not a chinese knock off. I would purchase the surebonder you have but it is only available on the UK or US amazon with a hefty import fee (were talking about paying double in my country) and has been reported that it will break with a plug converter (since it does not come in EU outlet standards). I wont list the links as i think some sort of filter might be removing my comments with links. But the bosch ones are easily found on amazon DE. If you would have a minute to check these and give your mind on it i would greatly appreciate it. I could even spread the word in our local gamestores as i know many there are in the same conundrum as me. And as a final resort i was thinking about a Steinel gluepro 300 or 400. It seems to have everything but i need to save some for it.

Why not put a magnet on the hinge-side top and bottom of the door with opposite polarity magnets at the hing-side top and bottom of the wall cut out? The magnets would keep the door in place and accommodate the arc of opening the door.

Most of the new ones have dimensions in the pinned comment, the dimensions for this one are in the video itself in notes at the top I think One of my patrons did a fantastic job of compiling all the foam shapes and dimensions from each build (among other things) in a Google docs spreadsheet, which is in the archive index on patreon as another little bonus for supporting the channel - there's quite a few now :)

Who told you medieval glad was hard to see through and wiggled? This isn't true at all. Glass taken from churches of Medieval Britain during Henry's destruction / reform made ours way to a church in my town. It's beautiful and sticks out like a sore thumb against modern glass. Because it's far superior to anything we make today. Admittedly they is a rainbow affect in the clear panes, yet it is still clear. The stained glass is amazing. I've never seen anything like it and I've toured the world looking at stained glass in churches for a book.

Sculptors deliberately exaggerate proportions of miniatures, the idea being that at this scale a miniature really needs exaggeration to be viewable.
