just a suggestion. you could set the depth with a router and route out a long slot and then use a magnet strip. would allow knives to be placed anywhere and also no fear of going through other side.
Super cool! I didn't know knives would stick through a layer of wood. Makes it look very sophisticated! I prefer this version to the industrial looking magnet runner. Great job!
I use rare earth magnets to hang printed recipes on my cupboard doors. Pretty handy. Strong enough magnets will work through an impressive amount of wood.
Wow. This is a BRILLIANT idea!! Nice work! Awesome epoxy colour! Like I said, I never liked it much before I saw your work. But you have real vision with it. Thanks for sharing!
love the blue! skip the gold u used before! its not different enough to look good! gold/yellow looks like UV damaged clear!! but thats just my opinion*....
Wouldn't it be better if you used a long strip of magnets instead of circular ones with spaces in between? Seems like it would be more user friendly and space-saving.
Don't know if anyone else has said it yet, but a rubberized finish would be helpful in a case like this to increase friction with the blades. A urethane might do the trick.
Errrrmmmm knife block is upside down.... Too many chefs hang them upside down and they fall off easier. The handle really should sit above the holder with the shank of the handle resting on top of the holder Beautiful knife holder though but one improvement put a second row of magnets across the middle to help with extra hold
Okay I actually love this idea. My issue with magnetic knife holders is that you can damage the edge on your knives if you take them off/put them back on wrong. The wood would seriously lessen the chance of that happening
That was not nearly a strong enough magnet😂😂😂 it’s better if the blade can have full contact with the surface without being tilted by the handle. This is a dope piece but knives will definitely be falling off it lol
That Milwaukee Tilt Lock circular saw is the best! I've had mine for 20 years and still running strong! Still have the hard car too! Framed houses, built decks and ripped off roofs! 2nd to none
Awesome piece, but I would have liked to have seen more out of the epoxy. It really doesn’t add to the piece. Maybe a lighter color?? Idk. It almost looks like a mistake and I know how awesome your skills are. But, if that’s what the customer wants…
Beautiful piece. Turn the saw around and cut so that the larger part of the Shoe is sliding on the larger part of the stock you are cutting. This will have the smaller part of the shoe hanging over the cut off section. This stops your circular saw from wiggling so much as you cut. This practice will result in straighter, cleaner cuts on your pieces.
Epoxy will be around for your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren to dispose of on another planet, perhaps. So let’s hope everybody’s clients don’t want epoxy.
Lots of compliments in the comments... But I'm curious... How much would you actually legitimately, honestly, for real, pay for something like this? I'm tempted to make a few if demand is high enough.
I'd like to see L.E.D lights incorporated, possibly in between each magnet ,drilling very close to the surface ,placing the board on a very taught wire while you drill will give you sound feedback allowing you to get extremly close to the surface without breaking through, experiment with this process first naturly,
Bears repeating: " I don't know what he uses, but I like Watco Butcher Block oil. If you want the absolute best food-safe protection, try 100% tung oil (not 'tung oil finish'). Jerry Brown
I live on Cape Cod. Would be cool to make one shaped like the Cape, with the blue marking the ponds and lakes. Just an idea that you can run with. If it's a good idea that is! Popular tourist destinations would probably fetch you some good money. Btw, nice Job. I'm also a carpenter 💪😎👍
“my customer wanted some epoxy”… You could also have replied he is crazy, that you’re WOODwork guy and he’d better find someone who does PLASTIC things.
Fabulous! ! Why can't this be marketed other than Tiko or Facebook? I OWNED By THE US - Technology only : Your talent is amazing. Sir, love the piece 🎉
Sorry, nothing special. A piece of wood with the obligatory spot of epixy, that could just as well be a spilled blue paint stain. Seen more exciting stuff coming from IKEA
This is absolutely breathtaking. May I ask what price range these are? I do understand it depends on the size and the amount of labor, but I would estimate about 18 to 24 in plus or minus I've never seen such beautiful word woodworking as you do.❤
Outa curiosity why not put the magnets in from the back and keep the natural look? I'm assuming the magnet won't hold? Magnets are super strong nowadays. This is a beautiful idea and I will be copying it, hope it comes out half as good as yours,, thank you for sharing this
Ever since I saw a lady being rushed to the clinic with blood gushing out on top of her feet like a major artery was cut... I asked and they said kitchen accident... That's an episode I will never forget. Pls put a plastic wedge below this art so that the knife doesn't fall directly to the floor- safety first
I like the idea and at first I was all ready to dig out a chunk of wood and build one. However, I just went and checked my knives with a magnet and only a few of them are attracted to a magnet. Another concern with holding them with magnets would be that they could become magnetized, and stick to or attract other utensils inadvertently. Most of my really good professional knives are either completely non-magnetic or only slightly magnetic even with a large rare earth magnet.
I don’t know what he uses, but I like Watco butcher block oil. If you want the absolute best protection that is food safe, try 100% tung oil (not “tung oil finish”).
I'm sure you didn't mean to show your audience how to use your board unsafely. Never hang your blades point up, unless you like the idea of having to avoid loosing a finger to a falling blade if you accidentally knock it loose.
You are very talented -- everything I've seen you make has been terrific! I hope you are successful in making a living at your art (which I'm sure you are).
Super nice. I have one that I bought from a kitchen supply store. But the magnets do not hold the knives very well. What kind of magnets are you using here?
Use a drill press if you use round magnets. A table saw for a long rectangle magnet which would actually be better for this type of application. Cool idea though, nice work overall.
All finishes are food safe, do your research and stop believing the Marketing strategy used by the companies that sell these finishes. If you want the proof of this let me know. I'll post it if you can't find it.
I have a magnetic strip that holds my knives, but I decided to turn my knives the opposite way so that the handle points upwards. That way the knives will not fall off as easily because the handles are resting on the edge of the holder.
Id love to buy one with pink and silver please contact me on how to order one from you please same size like the one you made could you engrave my name Elizabeth's kitchen please
What an amazing skill please don’t lose it as it is so valuable we all can’t be rocket scientists and carpentry is something I admire greatly stuck in an office all my career this looks cool and I hope this guy is making a good living and I include myself in this statement so don’t be offended anyone about RS
Dangerous as hell. I hope anyone stupid enough to do this is smart enough to sue you for giving them this dangerously stupid idea. Grab it wrong and that knife it falling on you.
probably the epoxy color needed to be more earth-based or wood-based, as that blue is a bit strong. but aside from that, great job. if the color was commissioned, nuff said
Next time use a cup, not a force error bit. Drill 2 mm deep with a cup + pilot bit. Remove the bit drill to depth, then remove the cork with a chiseled. The was to bottom will be flush without the added depth of the pilot point.
This is not "awesome", this is an accident waiting to happen. One little nudge and all those knives will be falling off due to poor magnetic grip because of the wood.
That sounds very good I like that idea I’m getting ready to build a cabinet and that would be a satin I could put into the cabin I’ve got a bunch of piano and couple other kinds of elk and I hickory tree down there one black walnut tree and I have several walnut trees for a mat now that I could cut a lamb and make the holder
The epoxy color was not to my liking, as it appeared to be an unsightly blemish, similar to an accidental paint spill. In retrospect, a transparent epoxy finish might have been a more suitable choice.
That is a fantastic idea! Seems to me you could pitch this product to kitchen department stores that sell high end hanging knife holders, ie Williams Sonoma, etc.
Cool. But i would have used a magnetic strip so they could put the knives where ever they want. Could just use router to cut out the area and set the depth on router and no worry about going threw the board. Just would need to use a chisel to make edges 90 degrees
