you should put a ground shield around the magnetron head, thus preventing it from sputtering away the magnetron. Typically the magnetron is also insulated with plastic or ceramic from the ground shield

looking at the glow the pressure is too high for a proper magnetron discharge, a pressure gauge will probably confirm this.

yes when you get a good vacuum the glow becomes less and concentrate in the magnetic field

you can use this to sputter different materials on to surfaces.
