I accepted the challenge. I had some wood discs cut from an oak three years ago. They were not flat or even. Took a few min.s to build a router sled. Next I had to build a circle jig. Turned out great. I left the live edge on it for character. My grandson will love it. Thanks for the inspiration.

The kids reaction is priceless. Fun fact. You built the "European" version that has 37 holes. There is a common version that has 33 holes. The extra four holes being at those inside corners on the second row from the bottom at each branch. Supposedly, mathematicians say the 37 hole version can't be solved for one marble left in the middle while it is possible with the 33 hole version.

Thanks for dredging up memories of my childhood, playing this game at my grandparents home in Scotland. I found a great bit of wood and built one for my grandchildren to play with at our house here in Australia. I hope that in 50 years time they might remember, and pass the game on to their grandchildren too - wherever they might be in the world by then.

Two things I really liked. First, I like how you think things out during the project - If I cut this then I won't have a reference for the holes. Second, I like the well or channel you did for the marbles to sit in. I think I would spend all day pushing the marbles around the outer well.

Three pads would be perfect and cannot wobble, with four, if one is slightly high then it WILL wobble. A tripod is always stable!
@3x3CustomTamar
@3x3CustomTamar 4 года назад
Not here because of the circle. The 3 pads will create a triangle under the circle. The edge of the circle overlaps that triangle. If one leans on the edge, like my kids do in the end of the video, it will tip at the point where there is a triangle.
@stevenrholland
@stevenrholland 4 года назад
Tamar, I understand what you’re saying, but that’s not ‘wobble’ that’s ‘tip’ and with significant force. With enough force that will happen with four pads too, as the circle overlaps the square created. It still wouldn’t ‘wobble’ with three. I love your videos BTW, they’ve inspired me to all kind of things... I’m building a table saw table, and a cross cut sled with a view to building a (much needed) new bed with the ‘triple lap joint’ using square stock. Love your style.

3 felt feet would actually make sure the board would never wobble. A plane defined by 3 points is always self leveling, but adding a 4th can introduce unevenness. Just some food for thought. ;)

@@3x3CustomTamar Yeah, that's true, but a properly wide equilateral triangle arrangement would have sorted that too. Then again, if your table was made to as high a standard as the rest of your furniture, it should all be rock solid. :)

Looks great! There is another game your kids look the perfect age to play. It's called 9 Men's Morris or Merril, or Mill. It's an ancient game that is even simpler to make and has a decent amount of strategy for people. Mine is 9" square and has 21 holes, I just used a 1 x 10". You need 9 marbles each of 2 colors. The rules are quite easy to learn - even though there are variations out there. Make it as fancy or plain as you like - my next one will have inlaid lines, just not sure what type yet. Nice work.

Quick note ... Three points defines a flat plane. Space the felt feet evenly and it would work just fine, it would even prevent any rocking of the board on a slightly uneven surface.
@3x3CustomTamar
@3x3CustomTamar 4 года назад
I’m not sure if that is correct. That would make a triangle under a round surface. The edge of the round surface will be outside the plane of the triangle, causing it to tip and rock if leaned on, like my kids are doing in the video
@larrydaniels6532
@larrydaniels6532 4 года назад
You're almost right, three points are the MINIMUM number of points that can determine a plane. Tamar knows a bit more of the actual forces that dictate far more than 3 felt spacers.

thanks! Just purchased some of the Walrus oil. I needed something to fill the gap between mineral oil and danish oil.

I'm sorry but you are more than "just" a woodworker, you have all the tools and make all things perfect! I Don't know how you learned. I see so many "woodworkers" strugle. I can't cut straight to a piece of wood 1" by 1". But I'm not a woodworker, I drive the ambulance and got corona true helping people! I rather have a woodwork shop like you do!! 😀👍🏻

@@3x3CustomTamar Yes I'm doing OK. I have the worst behind me. Please put up an other video? I can use it now that I have to sit at home. Can you make a chess board, or a guitar neck? 😉👍🏻🍀🌷

I played this game a lot back in the fifties, in fact still got my set somewhere, but nowhere near as good as this ons, maybe it's time to visit my workshop and knock up a new one and teach the grandies how to play. Cheers

Cool project. I would have cut one of those felt pads in two like half-moons.. replaced them when you got a chance.

I had one of these as a kid, and a couple of the triangle solitaire ones. I was only able to solve the triangle one, lol. the more pieces/marbles the harder

Nice challenge. I'll have to watch (some of) the other videos as well. Beautiful board. I play (from time to time with long term intervals) solitaire already more than 50 years. Last time now is about 6 years ago I think. Every time it takes some time to get into it and have only one piece left (in the middle of the board). Then I play it a few timss more and after that I put the game away for another couple of years. But the lay-out of your board is (slightly) different from the board I have. You have rows with 3-5-7-7-7-5-3 holes and I have 3-3-7-7-7-3-3. So this is in fact a new game for me. I need to try his out. Thanks fro sharing the video. Stay safe.

@@3x3CustomTamar I couldn't find our classic solitaire game, so I made a quick and dirty (well not so quick as I wanted and dirtier than I expected) new one (with the extra 4 holes of your version). Yesterday evening and this morning I have been brushing my brain cells to play the classic game and after the 12th attempt I ended with one left. So now I can continue with the next level, your version. I'm curious how long is that going to take me.
