I think most of the haters here are missing the point. I believe he's talking about conserving your fuel source by not running a 23000 BTU heater if you don't absolutely need to. By holing up in a small interior room, you would probably only need 1 to 3000 BTUs which will use much less fuel per day. Of course you'll still need ventilation. Of course you would need to dress appropriately. I would prefer a center draft kerosene lamp such as an aladdin. I think Aladdin's would burn cleaner with much less fumes, and much more light. Placing a lamp under a flat metal plate with one of those fans that sit on the wood stove, and are powered buy heat might be a good idea too.

Dietz Jupiter 2500 lantern will heat a good size room, you are correct. Let the haters hate, when their body temperature comes down a few degrees, they’ll change their minds and the love will flow.

We just had a 24hr power outage due to severe winter weather. I used five tea lights in a tall-sided tray to heat about 150sf, even with the window open a bit. Before that it was too cold to be out of bed (in layers) without shivering. Five candles probably wouldn't have been enough if my home had had more time to lose heat, or if the temp had gone down 20° more, but regardless I'm a believer. I got 200 6hr candles on Amazon for 18 bucks which is maybe 300 hours if you use five at a time. My kero/oil lantern works just as well and I can carry it around. I've been making vegetable oil lamps and lamp oil/liquid paraffin lamps so I can have alternative/additional fuel if I need it. They make a huge difference as well and use cheap, readily available materials. I've been lighting a veg oil lamp while I make breakfast and it takes the chill off in a minute or two. I use a flat kerosene lamp wick with the veg oil to make a bigger flame, but you can also use several wicks in one veg oil lamp. I got cork and covered it in aluminum foil to float some of the wicks so i wouldn't have to adjust the height. Canola oil is $4/gallon here and basically odorless. (I read that corn oil is harder to light btw) Walmart has tabletop tiki torches right now for a buck, too. You just fill with lamp oil and push the wick down as far as possible. There's no chimney though so you have to account for that. Anyway thanks for this video! It's very clear and direct which I really appreciate.

I used a wide body pickle jar, with a 1 inch wide wick. I took and cut two identical 1 inch long slots in the lid jar. I also added 4 ventilation holes to the lid jar and I added some glass rocks to the bottom of the jar for additional weight and looks. This double wick DIY heater gets very hot and the glass jar itself doesn't get hot at all. The cheapest way that I burn my DIY jar heater is with using 2/3 cooking oil mixed with 1/3 lamp oil. The lamp oil thins out the cooking oil and makes it burn better. I use several DIY wick heater jars to supplement my heat in my TV room.

this heater works great, one must understand that most of the heat will collect near the cealling of the room. a few fans pointed up will circulate all the hot air

I'm sorry, my friend, but a kerosene oil lamp will not satisfactorily heat a room in winter, where I live. It may raise the temperature of a small room by a few degrees, when measured at the ceiling. When winter temperatures are well below freezing and have been for several days, some kerosene HEATERS have a hard time heating a single room. It's just plain science. How much heat must be produced to increase the temperature of x volume (cubic feet) of space by the desired number of degrees? No, I don't have the specific formula handy. I've lived it. Early years were spend on a farm before REA brought power lines to our land. One of my mother's kerosene lamps sits in the center of our kitchen table. Wood supplied energy needed for heating and cooking. Additionally, I collect oil lamps & have quite a few of them, including the canning jar version. Also have 2 kerosene cook stoves, 1 double burner & 1 triple burner. Have both modern (similar to yours) and a much earlier version kero space heaters. Have considerable experience in using all of them in cold weather. Along with many years of heating my home and a small greenhouse with kerosene. (Stand-alone house sized and forced air versions). From an experience standpoint, can only speak based on the climate here in NC. In a home with an energy efficient rating high enough to warrant a discount from our electric coop, an oil lamp will not raise the temperature of a small bedroom (for example) enough to be noticeable, when the outside temperature is well below freezing. The volume of air in the room has to be heated from the top, down, as warm air rises. In closing, look back at history. Oil lamps were used to provide lighting. Fireplaces, wood, coal and oil stoves (heaters) were all used to provide space heating, in the days before electricity & thermostats. Yes, I've used oil lamps and lanterns to warm my hands. But that doesn't mean they produce enough heat to warm an average sized room to a material degree.

Oldtimer Lee Thanks for the comment, but I'd have to disagree. I've ran one latern in my small 8x10 office with the heat turned off and it was notably warmer than the rest of the house. I should have taken temperature readings, but it was more than a couple degrees. I think the principles are having a small room, and very good insulation. In a survival situation, I would put insulation in the windows and board them. Although the 8x10 room seems very small, it will keep everyone warm when not performing activities. This would indeed keep people alive if they do not have access to a fireplace, wood stove, or large kerosene heater. Although I don't have exact measurements, consider this: Commercial space heaters for one room application run around 3,000-5,000 BTU. An aladdin lantern (as per this site - www.aladdinlamps.info/burning.htm) puts off 2,000+ BTU depending on the wick height). If you run 2 kerosene lanterns at the same time, you are in fact equaling that of a space heater.

+Oldtimer Lee i live in pHilladelphia. i put two oil lamps filled with kerosene in my bedrooms. my auto on my heater goes off because it gets so warm. I have a kerosene heater in my living room and it SAVES us tons of money and we are always nice and toasty warm. EVEN when it is 20 degrees outside. Also, in my area when power goes out. Others are without heat and light, but we never are ! Because the Kerosene heaters use no power!
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 8 лет назад
crazey4utube Statement still stands. A flat wick kerosene lamp will not satisfactorily heat a room, in winter, where I live. Should have added "without another primary heat source, nearby." If a flat wick kerosene lamp could provide enough BTUs to function, as space heater, you wouldn't need a space heater in your living room. You'd simply add another oil lamp. Next time the power goes out for several days, in 20 degree winter weather, try just lighting a flat wick lamp, per room. Will you need to also use your kerosene space heater to keep your living space above freezing? Around here, we'd have fire up our kero space heaters to help keep our pipes from freezing, during an extended power failure. Flat wick lamps simply do not produce enough BTU's to prevent that from happening. FWIW, this area has experienced ice storms that has taken out the power for 2 weeks on more than one occasion.

8 of those with 1 inch wicks will heat up my 200 foot space in a metal on metal shed, especially if u have 6 to 8 red bricks or a 5 gallon clay pot on top. the more u can heat up the better the BTUs seem to be, not saying they go up, it just feels that way with the radiant heat coming off the bricks.

I wonder if diesel trated with 90% rubbing alcohal would be more cost efective , This is what some people use in a kerosene heater

You can only burn what you can GET easily. Kerosene may be impossible to get if the SHTF. If YOU are without, power odds are so is your local gas station, that sells kerosene. Which means they couldn't pump it out of their underground tanks. And if they could, they would be charging an outrageous price per gallon, after vigilanties or profiteers took control of the station. Unless you have your own giant storage tanks, that you can afford to fill BEFORE, sh#t happens -forget kerosene. A big LP tank is a far better option, that can last an entire winter heating season. But even that would be impossible to get a refill in a genuine SHTF situation. Wood or even Coal, are far better options for long term survival.

Your kerosene lamp, if you don't need the light, skip the glass chimney. Use a metal tube as the chimney (just like your big heater does). Take a tin can, turn it upside down, a bottle opener/can opener to make several holes around the top side and the very top. Light the wick and drop on the chimney. It'll produce three times the heat as a glass, open top lamp. I do this in my shed. If you need to soften the heat and distribute it better, drop a small flower pot on upside down. Don't do any of this with kids or pets I the house. It will get knocked over.
@annehollier4632
@annehollier4632 2 года назад
Where do you suggest placing the flower pot to distribute heat?… over the can ? Or directly over the flame?
@STho205
@STho205 2 года назад
@@annehollier4632 over the can. If using the flower pot, place many more holes in the can chimney top or cut the bottom (top) off the can to make an open tube since the pot will gather the heat to radiate.

i seen in russia they just smack a meter or so long metal chimney tube on top of a hurricane lantern and heat with that because the metal flue gets hot and heats the room better than just air from flame. so you might want to get that to stick on top. cause what you have here is just a diy petroleum lamp you dubbed a heater. but it's not a heater per se.

Jar lamps aren't very stable.. too small & narrow bases. A better way is to buy Dietz lanterns... not expensive, and last for a lifetime if not abused. I like the "Air Pilot" and the "Jupiter" models... the latter has a large capacity & was made to be able to help heat greenhouses.... And they'll burn outside in wind for lighting. Just my 2 cents... ( but unless you're in Florida, you're better off with a real kero heater . )

Kerosene isn't a healthy way to heat a room. A lot of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons come off burning kerosene. Nice DIY lamp for camping, but why not just buy a pre-made kerosene lantern for a few dollars more? It's likely to have more stability in the base making it safer to use.
