This pinball game made out of wood uses the BBC micro:bit to keep the score. The buzzer, which is connected to the micro:bit, makes a sound when you hit the target. And the hacked Christmas lights twinkle when you've scored a point, which is also controlled by the micro:bit.
The buzzer is connected to pin 0, the lights are connected to pin 1 and both targets are connected to pin 2.
This video is made for parents and educators who are interested in making their own coding and robotics projects and who might want to teach kids how to do that.
If you would like to check out my code, you can download it from my Google drive: drive.google.com/file/d/1muZ-...

If you would like to see a more simple version of this pinball game, please check my blog for some photos of pinball games made by kids: programmeren-met-scratch.blogspot.com/2018/01/flipperkastje-voor-de-bbc-microbit.html

Thanks for telling me. Great that you're using this idea for an end of year class project. If you would like to see a pinball game that is less difficult to make for kids, please check out my blog: programmeren-met-scratch.blogspot.nl/2018/01/flipperkastje-voor-de-bbc-microbit.html The blog post is in Dutch, but if you scroll down a bit, you can find some photo's of the more simple version of my pinball game. Two of them are made by kids, the first one is my example. One piece of advice. In order for the target to make contact long enough it is very important that it hits a metal that's free to move, otherwise the time that the electrical circuit is closed becomes too short for the micro:bit to detect. GOOD LUCK! I would love see what your students made when your project is finished.

Extremely cool. You could even use the acceleration sensor to implement a tilt mechanism :)

Thanks! That´s an interesting idea ;-) I haven't tried that yet.

Thank you! I saw you were working on a Turing Machine out of Lego. Maybe you also like a game called Turing Tumble. I just bought it a few weeks ago and I really like it. The makers of the game use marbles to explain how a computer works and one of the puzzles is adding two numbers.

Thanks, but I already own a Digicomp 2 computer and it works in the same fashion😀 Great teaching toy from what I see.

Thanks! It was really fun to make this pinball game. Programming the micro:bit is a bit like coding in Scratch, although you have to download your code and upload it to the micro:bit every time you make a change. That's a bit annoying, but other than that you can do cool things with it.
@harasen_haras5
@harasen_haras5 6 лет назад
Programming has been more complicated than that before... back when there were no digital programming languages yet and you had to mail a thing to a big computer and get a test of your program mailed back. An interesting thing to think about.

Yes, you're right. I've just read the book Hidden figures, which is about human computers: woman who were very good at math and did a lot of calculations for the engineers of NASA.

Hey just wondering. what are the items needed to make this pinball game?
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 6 лет назад
Hi, besides wood I used christmas lights, a simple speaker, aluminium foil, "spring steel", which I bought at this shop: nl.opitec.com/opitec-web/articleNumber/817794 , a marble, elastic strings, some tin electrical wire, tape, a ketchup bottle pod, a straw, a skewer, beads for underneath the wooden stars, and nails ofcourse. Does this answer your question? Greetings, PinkyPepper

Hi Pinky, I am creatin my own micro:bit pinball. Can I ask what you used as a power source?
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
Cool. I just use the normal batteries for the micro:bit. I am using christmas lights that work well with 2 AA batteries. Good luck with your own pinball game. I would love to see a photo or video when you're finished.
@raphaeltan8824
@raphaeltan8824 5 лет назад
PinkyPepper. thanks for your reply.. Do you mean that the micro:bit is powered by 2 AAA batteries, while the lights are powered by a separate 2AA power pack?
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
@@raphaeltan8824 You´re welcome. No, I don´t use a seperate 2AA power pack. Two AAA batteries provide the same voltage as two AA batteries and that´s enough for the hacked christmas lights I am using.
@raphaeltan8824
@raphaeltan8824 5 лет назад
PinkyPepper thanks for clarifying. So just 1 pack of power source of 2 AAA batteries for micro:bit and the lights and sound? I am having difficulties having long enough contact time for the micro:bit to detect the connection. Can you show the back of the target? Thanks
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
@@raphaeltan8824 Yes, for a simple speaker and led lights that's okay. Having long enough contact time is the most difficult part of making a pinball game with the micro:bit. I've used spring steel for this, which I bought in this shop: nl.opitec.com/opitec-web/articleNumber/817794 At 0.45 seconds you see the back of the target and in the slow motion you can see the spring steel and the target move together for a little while. This is just long enough for the micro:bit to detect it. If I would use tape on both sides to stick the spring steel to the wood, it wouldn't work...

Can you help me about how to connect wire with the microbit
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
Hi, do you mean how to connect a wire with the micro:bit in general or would you like to know how to connect the wires when making a pinball machine?
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
@Nhi Ngo Hi, I've connected the speaker to Pin 0 and the GND pin, the christmas lights to Pin 1 and the GND pin and both targets are connected to Pin 2 and to the GND pin. To connect so many wires to the GND pin I connected one big wire to that pin and connected the other wires to that big wire. Connecting wires to the micro:bit can be done in several ways. You can use crocodille or banana clips, or you can tape the conducting part of a wire to one of the pins. Just make sure the wire isn't touching one of the other pins at the same time. Good luck!
@tuyettnhii123
@tuyettnhii123 5 лет назад
We got trouble because we already connected targets and wires together but sometimes it working and sometimes it’s didn’t:((( I don’t know how to get this work
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
@@tuyettnhii123 If it does work sometime, the wiring should be correct. If the wires don't touch other pins, it might have to do with the contact time between the target itself and the conducting piece it has to touch. Having long enough contact time between those two is the most difficult part of making a pinball game with the micro:bit. I've used spring steel for this, which I bought in this shop: nl.opitec.com/opitec-web/articleNumber/817794 At 0.45 seconds you see the back of the target and in the slow motion you can see the spring steel and the target move together for a little while.
@pinkypepper
@pinkypepper 5 лет назад
