In this video I will be making a box to insert household sized filters over top of a mini split heat and air conditioning unit. This unit is installed inside of a wood shop and I want to protect it from the dust and overspray that will be created during normal operations of the shop!

It's a requirement in a metal shop! I just installed a mini split because I destroyed my conventional air handler with abrasive grinding dust. Expensive lesson. Also frightening to realize I work in that air all day! I wear a full face respirator while grinding, but take it off after grinding. While I only grind at the downdraft table, and I run 4 filtered box fan air scrubbers, there was still enough airborne dust to kill the air handler across the shop. Let that sink in a minute. Now I only grind and cut outside...I'd rather have neighbors hate me for the noise than die of lung disease. Metal shop air quality is not discussed enough...or even thought about by most of us.

It has been a year do you wish you mounted the unit higher on the wall? I have an almost 11 foot high ceiling. Just wondering. Great video I really enjoyed your work. Thanks

Wish I had your high ceilings! I'm doing this project right now. But my ceilings are only 9ft with a nearly flat roof, so my filter box is horizontal up to the ceiling. The box has tons of angles because the ceiling is slightly sloped in two directions. And I have two to make of different sizes/shapes--one for the woodwork side and another for the smaller metal work side of the shop. It's a real skills-building challenge!

Dang it sounds like you have a plan though! We have to protect that investment! Those mini split units aren’t cheap!

Yep. Looks just like the one Jay Bates made 4 years back. It's a good system and it'll save lots of maintenance on your split.

Watched your shop tour. Impressed. Never seen a panel glue up device like that…..now that’s impressive. Like you pace and banter and will check out your other vids. Only problem is all those keys-haha. I couldn’t handle that hanging while I worked….more keys, more problems I heard once. Random comment-sorry! Anyway, good simple build that makes sense. Good luck to your channel!!

Nice video. I also like how you kept in the mistake of cutting out the supporting pocket screws so that other people like myself can take that into account when I build mine. Good job! One question. The box basically just fits over the top of the unit and then you sealed it off right?
