Very well planned little system! I wouldn’t have ever been able to settle on what modules I wanted in it, hence my two by 168 hp case for drum stuff only, and another melodic box that’s four by 126 hp! There’s really not much that your case can do that my melodic box can’t do, except I’ve got some different sequencers and effects. I can’t ever settle on my projects as being truly finished, so I never do finish them, they’re all work in progress. I can see many lessons I should take from you when I hear you talk about your box. Namely, to take the time to sort of revel in the successes and be sure to follow through with my plans to put the thing to use once it’s done, no matter what it is. I have many fears of exposing myself as someone who can become sort of obsessed with toys, and I really come down on myself for it every day. I applaud you not only in your careful planning and sound decision making regarding this project, but also in your seeing to it that you’re exposing it and showing it modestly, with an important message for people who might wish to follow your example and build something while not having tons of cash to pay out. A very valuable endeavor for you, and now an inspiring and helpful example to reach people who need it! It’s tough to find meaning and usefulness in these things sometimes, and I know it that you have done both. CONGRATULATIONS, AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!

@calinguga
@calinguga 3 года назад
from my experience building electronic things, although not modular synths: aside from some specialized chips, electronic parts like resistors, capacitors, transistors are on the order of cents, and you'll need some hundreds. pots, jacks, knobs, vero board, cables are a bit more but still cheap and there's far fewer of them. power supply, case, panels and graphics can be diyed as well. you'll need tools and consumables. if you already have some tools and are willing to do everything yourself (so nothing in the form of kits), i couldn't imagine such a project costing more than say 200-300 bucks (spread over several months), at least in my part of the world. if you don't have any tool it could get arbitrarily more expensive (although i think it's wrong to count the whole price of tools for one project; those tools are yours forever). if you also do that weird thing americans do where they count the hours spent working on something in their free time as lost wage, and you just wanna make music, you're better off buying used gear. if on the other hand you wanna build a synth because you love making your own things, and because it's a cool way of learning electronics and circuit manufacturing, and believe gaining skills and life experiences is more important than slaving away for money, then you don't need me telling you to do it. but it does seem to be a rabbit hole, so good luck.

Yoooo!!! I'm working on a cigar box with the same idea in mind, but using an arduino to do the Poly MIDI->CV. How are you doing the analog out for CV? Does teensy have onboard DAC or are you doing like PWM/using other modules?
@otemrellik

Teensy does have an onboard DAC, but I'm actually using a couple external dac chips. I kind of need to revisit this module. It can be a bit glitchy at times.

Looks amazing!! I'm looking to make something similar and the resources in the description are super helpful! I have some questions though. What kind of wooden panels did you use? Are they about 2mm thick? And how do you mount your stripboards against the front-panels? Especially for the noise module this seems rather difficult. Thanks a lot!
@otemrellik
@otemrellik 3 года назад
I use a a lot of different types of wood. All 1/8" which is about 3mm. I found that attaching pots and jacks first to the panel then just finding a way to solder them to the protoboard works best. Here are some photos (noise and mult). imgur.com/RvOKp67 imgur.com/fFNB4K0

@otemrellik

@@alebrenna441 The photo transfer I learned from the TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin channel. You need a laser printer, some label relief paper and some transfer medium. It's a pretty cool process.
