Here's a little trick i've used multiple times when working with very Wide Angle lenses that need ND filters. Most wide angle lenses don't have front filter holders, and many don't have gel holders in the rear lens element. So this little card stock adapter is something you can make to get your ND Filter on and off a lens. Or you can use this trick to add a clear filter to protect your wide angle when working around debris.

Quick, inexpensive alternative, for fixed curved wide angle lenses! Thx for the tip :)

Hi. Any chance that you can improve this DIY ? You mentioned that you would 3D print this normally. Any chance that you can do it and show us afterward ? Thanks to answer

You mentioned doing a 3D print for the filter adaptor. How would you go about doing that? I just don't like the idea of having bits of cardboard scraping against the expensive ND filter glass.

Very helpful. Do you think an 82mm ring would not get captured? I want to buy a Tiffen, but that's as large as their Black Pro-Mist gets. I have this same exact lens so hearing your opinion on this would be a huge help!

Great video and tip..I'm going to try with my m43 Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 pro lens with fixed petal lens hood for my panasonic g85..I have a 86mm variable ND but in testing even though wider in diameter than the lens when touching the front of the lens hood the edges still show in frame so I ordered a 105mm diameter circular variable ND filter by haida (only one that size I could find and hope it's wide enough to avoid the vignetting.).. My question is how do you ensure the cardboard diy 'arm' ends you created do securely hold the ND filter in place without the filter falling off? Is there space to slide those arms into the rear of the ND filter and hold it securely somehow and does this not stop the filter from turning to change the exposure? (I also have the wide angle Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens for my Nikon FF camera and am hoping I can do the same for that lens too though the lens hood is 87mm in diameter) . Do you keep your ND filter pretty much permanently attached to the diy filter holder? Thank you for your feedback

This is sports tape, or hockey tape. It's used to add grip to a handle and it's matte not shiny.

Can a filter be dropped in behind the lens, maybe over the sensor and used as a sensor protector too?
@MrCheesyCam

Some lenses support this and even have a slot behind the lens, some lens adapters have them built in. It's possible to use behind the lens.

I like to see a picture that is not post edited. I am having a tough time believing that that concoction works with no vignetting and without degrading the image.

When you shoot video on the GH4 the sensor is cropped in. Especially in 4K when compared to 1080, it’s even more cropped in. The oversized filter will then prevent the vignette. I still use it today and there are videos on my channel. Of course image quality will change slightly as you are putting an additional two pieces of polarizers in front of the lens. Also you can be more prone to lens flares by adding more glass over a lens.

Choose a larger ND Filter size, make the adapter bigger. Just like how matte boxes work, you go bigger to prevent vignetting. Depends on your lens.
