Hey guys! Thanks for all of the feedback. I'd like to clear a few things up. Every piece of wood was installed using a metal tie. On the rafters I used Galvanized Gusset Angles which are extremely strong. Yes a true rafter hanger would be a bit stronger but these will work just fine. I also mention that I will be lag screwing the ledger to the joists. The ends of the rafters were tied to the beam using hurricane ties. This was done the following day. I was in a rush to dry it in before the rain and didn't have time to film every detail. These are VLOGS and are not meant to be HOW-TO videos or to teach people building code. If you are so worried about people sticking exactly to your local codes you should start a RU-vid channel to educate the rest of us. They ARE however, meant to inspire people to get out there and build some stuff! The roof is extremely strong and rigid and I am completely happy with how it turned out. Thanks for watching!

@buildingsmall8422
@buildingsmall8422 3 года назад
It can be tricky. Mine was easy because I cut back to the sheathing. Maybe find a stud on the inside and try to get a measurement that you can use outside to get close. You might have to hammer a nail or 2 in to find one. All depends on the type of siding though. Good luck

@DirtDDigler
@DirtDDigler 4 года назад
I am not understanding how to find the rim joist on my house when installing the ledger up high, isnt the rim joist close to the ground just above the foundation?
@johnnelson8956
@johnnelson8956 4 года назад
DirtDDigler does that house not have a second floor? If so the rim joist sits on the top plate of the first floor exterior walls. The floor joists are attached to the rim joist as well as sitting on the wall. By lagging the ledger to the rim you are fastening the shed roof to the strongest part of that wall.
@vandogtrailer6701
@vandogtrailer6701 4 года назад
@@DirtDDigler Right. Mr. Nelson is correct. Sometimes the rim joist between floors is called the band joist, but structurally it's the same as the rim joist on the first floor. If you measure from the window sill to the floor in the inside, go down the same amount on the outside plus about 3 more inches. Behind that piece of siding you'll find the band joist. The ledger should be attached there, just like you see on all the ground level deck examples.
@renorican1

I'm pretty concerned about the tie-in of the roof underlayment with the Tyvek on the wall. It may be that you didn't focus on that detail for the video so we didn't see that element, but there are few things more important to the longevity of your new roof than this connection.

@mustang9549
@mustang9549 4 года назад
brandon young 100% agree. I bought my house with a deck like this so if I ever want to rip it out the old the deck the roof has to come with it. I don’t know why you would ever do it that way as it just added in a crap ton of more work for me. My first house so lessons learned for the next one.
@brandonyoung181
@brandonyoung181 4 года назад
@@mustang9549 You can cut out sections of the deck and then support the covering while you rip the rest of the deck out, then pour new footers for the covering and add in new supports that way, then build your deck around that.
@buildingsmall8422

Not here to hurt any feelings..... But seriously your build has many red flags from the start of your build. You ignored the engineering, planning of this type of job. I cringed watching you build this patio roof. You are definitely putting you and your family at risk of injury or even worst. DIY people need to realize that watching videos on the internet or tv don’t make you a competent carpenter to take on a job such as this, there is way more to it. Just because you see someone else do it in a way that seem right, it might not work for the application of your job. Every job is different, it might seem the same but it’s not. Do your homework people!

Can you cite examples? It's not as helpful of a criticism when you just blanket the whole thing as wrong but don't say why

Yes please tell me what I did wrong. In my opinion I overbuilt everything. I'm no engineer but I have common sense and can read wood load tables. It's a house, not a rocketship. Eagerly awaiting your response.

If you want to be critical, at best you can say there might be minor things he could’ve done to ensure passing code, but dangerous definitely not. All a bunch of crap. My old house has a rooftop that was done 30 years ago, Looks like crap and 100% not up to code. It is still standing strong and I’m sure would still be for another 20 years. This gentlemen’s roof will last 50 years easy.
