This is a video of my DIY milling of a single sided PCB (FR-4 copper clad) using a CNC-3018 PRO and laser etching the front fiberglass i.e. FR-4 face using a 7W blue laser to mark components and values.
The back copper plane and front fiberglass face were processed using slightly different toolchains.

2. FlatCAM: flatcam.org
3. Candle: github.com/Denvi/Candle
Fiberglass Face
1. KiCad EDA: www.kicad.org
2. Inkscape: inkscape.org
3. LaserGRBL: lasergrbl.com
Note: The video was made over multiple milling attempts using different sized v-bits. The final PCB shown was made using a 30° 0.1mm V-bit whereas the milling footage is using a 30° 0.2mm V-bit.

The 3018 can do much better if you tighten it a bit. You may have chatter or too much X-Y backlash or play in the bearings... Great idea with engraving, too bad it's really usable on single sided boards only. Oh, and V-bits are only good where a 0.5mm end mill won't go.. give end mills a try.

You're right. I am aware that there is play in the spindle carriage. I'll have a look at it again to see if I can find a quick solution. Otherwise, it's not too big of a deal for me at the moment. And thanks for the tip on trying a 0.5mm end mill. I'll try it out. Should cut down the milling time considerably.
@AliKhalil
@AliKhalil 2 года назад
I tried out the 0.5mm end mill. This is the way! The quality of the trace edges is far superior to that which I achieved with the v-bits. The milling time is faster since I can cut shallower and faster. I'm looking to find some better i.e. more durable bits. I would love to find something that has a really tiny flute length since I'm only cutting down to 0.05-0.1mm depth. For anyone interested in trying be aware that because of how thing they are the bits can be really fragile. I broke 3 before I got my first successful run... and those were even before I started the milling. After I slowed down and took a bit more care while handling it was fine.

@@AliKhalil A wider angle v-bit also worked better for me than the 30degree ones. I single pass is often enough for me.
@AliKhalil
@AliKhalil 2 года назад
@@mcbriers2862 thanks for the comment. I tried 45degrre and 90degree v-bits and had mixed results. Someone else in the comments recommended a 0.5mm flat end mill. This consistently gives me better results than any of the v-bits and much faster.

What's the widths of the tracks do you have? I tried SMD milling, either I do something wrong or it's not supposed to do it. But I couldn't do the milling with 0.254 or 0.5mm. Even 1mm went bad for me. - Also I've recommended to use 10*0.1mm for smd, is it really good ?

To make Heightmap you use the cable in GND and A5 (Board Pin) ? Do you know some reference in internet that show this ?

Do you still use more passes to do the cutout? I have problems keeping the board still with one single pass.

If you don't clamp it on all four sides, you should use double sided carpet tape to keep the board down.

Could CNC-3018 build-in software support to other PCB files , so that you can do the same work.

I'm not aware of any software built by a vendor selling 3018s that can do the job.

@AliKhalil

I have a 7W laser being used at 30% power, so ~2100mW. You'll have to just test using the 500mW laser by reducing the feed rate.

Hi, I wonder why using 4 passes, for a width of 0.2 mm to mill with a 0.2 mm V shape 30 deg...1 pass should be enough ?
@timgraber215
@timgraber215 20 дней назад
Usually one pass is too narrow. When milling or laser etching a board, the process generates very small bits of copper that create shorts. 4 passes gives a large enough margin between the trace and the adjacent copper to eliminate shorts.

Hmm.. With which tool do I do the heightmap thing? From 3D printers I know that bed levelling makes a lot of sense, but neither the hardware gcode sender nor UGS nor Repetier host knows anything about creating a height map. And in Candle I saw nothing obvious that would translate to a height map.

@AliKhalil
@AliKhalil 2 года назад
Yes, you are correct. I didn't make the video as a guide/tutorial. I really struggled with figuring out how to get a PCB made on the CNC and I understand where you're coming from. This video was made mostly as a proof-of-concept for myself in getting the flow down as well as figuring out how to use my camera and other equipment set up to be able to make these videos. I have gotten multiple feedback that the video should've had more of the entire process. I have to redesign this PCB layout and I will try to capture the full process starting from KiCad.
