If you have been sucked into the pintrest Ankara craze like me, then you have certainly seen this beautiful print in the form of maxi skirts, dresses, shirts and rompers. Instead of fantasizing about them I decided to make one. The fabric costs around $25 for 6 yards at African boutiques or markets. So stop fantasizing, go get one and follow this tutorial so you can make your own Dashiki (Angelina) Maxi Skirt.

I’m definitely going to try something like this, but not exactly. I did not know how to make gathers so this really helps. I will give more info when I’m done. My material looks a little like this too. I sell African stuff and always looking for ideas.

What does the interfacing do there? Does it keep the waist smooth? I really want a stiff fit there.

@@Shesgrownup all depends on what interfacing that you're using. Some are stiffer and other. But usually the ankara material are pretty stiff but if you want a stiffer fit then go for the interfacing

First of all THAT FABRIC!!! It's so beautiful I'd be too scared to cut into it!! I'd also add a couple more finishing and structural steps to the waist band (make it cleaner and stronger) but that's it!! You mentioned in the comments that you do hem the bottom. Thank you. Making skirts or clothing for others is something I will definitely do sometime down the line. At this moment I want to learn how to sew using myself as a dress form and inspire others to do the same. I want others to know that anyone can sew or do anything they want as long as they have the thought and put the action behind it.
