Hey mate, nice video again 👍 Please READ: Welding over zinc is poisonus. There was as a guy locally that prefered to do auto repaor with zinc sheet metal. He was doing it for years. And now he is no longer with us 😒 So please, do the local cleanup before welding, i would love to see more of your videos as you do a realy nice job 👍
Welding over zinc coatings without proper ventilation is certainly not healthy and can cause an acute sickness called metal vapor fever. It is supposedly severely unpleasant, but it is temporary! But on the other hand there is no reason not to prevent inhaling welding fumes. They won't help you see your grand kids grow up! ;)

Ummm…😳 You’ve got one, it’s called a lathe. 😂 Further, if you attach the follower (bending runner?) to the saddle, you can have auto advance. 👍 I would envisage running the lathe in deep reduction, the arbour held between centres and tubing away from the chuck. It’s how I’ve seen springs and stuff being formed. Anyways, great channel. 👍❤️
In principle I could use the lathe, but the sand getting between the saddle and the weighs would destroy the lathe's accuracy and I want a system that can reclaim the sand. Thanks anyway

grab a diff ;) one axle bolted to the ground, arm on the other, bendy doodad on the crown wheel/housing. you got a 2:1 reduction. used to bend that pipe you got as a solid bar... but then... get yourself the proper wheels. the rollers arent that expensive. or make em. rather than wrap it around the cylinder with the squashing, just roll it through. lot easier. nice fat flywheel (tractor tyre full of water?) driving one roller, and just keep feeding through and squeezing it a bit more. any radius. any pitch... no sand, no sweat. look at a standard ring roller? youre damn keen trying to do it in one pass directly. not sure how you attach at the ends on these, but stainless? i suggest using compression fittings for this stuff. one, old boiler lessons... you wanna be able to clean them out. lot of scale builds up. i have really good water here, and i still get bad scale. it cant be avoided. two. stainless fatigues if its restrained on thermal cycles. stopped making monotubes unless i run distilled water several years ago... the best approach is the radiator type thing, with a LOT of compression glands... old "babcox and wilcock" or "yarrow" type things. even if it isnt boiling but simply heating. large bore upper and lower receivers or headers, and 20 or more straight pipes between in the flue. and only let the thing rest in sockets, no bolts, clamps, tie downs. has to expand freely. i bought a whole bunch of heat pipes for an experiment with them, but yeah... never got around to it. make a "hedgehog" type inner sleeve with an outer jacket tank sleeve thingy for throwing in the chimney of the normal fireplace... copper is so much more forgiving for long term service.

Could you put that inside a container...and put the exhaust of say a small engine thru that pipe...and inside the tank have the water...kinda like a reverse heat exchanger I know many small engine exhausts can use 1" or less exhaust fittings so the pipe should be enough to handle the volume of exhaust from a small engine.
Ease of manufacturing as a welder, I know it's not as efficient as copper, but I plan on exposing it to some really high heat and copper might suffer if not full of water.

No I haven't worked with salty hot tubs. $800 is pretty expensive, I imagine he's getting them manufactured through a third party and I have no idea what they're charging to do that. The rig that I built to make my coil might be your cheapest option if you're that way inclined. There would have to be someone out there who could manufacture a coil for you locally. But if you want to make the coil I would go with copper pipe, a little bit more expensive but easier to work into the desired shape. It just needs to be filled with sand and the ends hammered over so that the pipe doesn't crush. Hope that helps.

would something like a cement tumbler which also can be angled be worth looking at for your sand removal or would something like a large air compressor to blow out the air be the way you want to go?
Nice work Steve! I expect that if you are going to make any more 25 mm s/s pipe spirals that you will utilise some of those electric motors and gearboxes that you mentioned having. A metal internal spring like electrician's use, should be faster and easier than the sand method. Watching the piece of timber on the lathe was wild especially the way it seemed to twist like a aircraft propeller. Is it still just the three girls that you have? Hi Mark. Yeah when I played back on the camera I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I just happened to fluke the right shutter speed that matched the RPM of the lathe. And yes, we still have only the three girls though I keep joking to my wife that there is still more seats left in the minivan and I'm happy to do my part 😅

Actually, check out the child assistance because from memory, three kids was the worst position of all, whereas four and beyond gives extra support. @@LittleAussieRockets I asked one of the science teachers at school about the effect of seeing aircraft propellers changing their apparent direction on film when the revs are changed and he said it was quite a complex topic given the refresh rate of our eyes, the shutter speed or frame rate of the camera and the revolutions of the propeller(s). In a similar vein, I was watching a English farming show and they were attempting to show how the chickens reacted to aerial and then ground threats. With the ground threat they used a stuffed fox and the chickens didn't react properly because they have a higher eye refresh rate than we do and they could instantly see that the fox was not moving correctly. @@LittleAussieRocketsHi, I don't mean to butt into a convo about something else, but I wanted to respond to you directly rather than take my chances leaving a comment on a 10mth old video. In regard to the sand removal, assuming you haven't already found an easy and efficient solution, and assuming the sand is not bone dry and can be simply (but messily) blown out with compressed air, why don't you simply wash it out with water? Stand the coil upright, make a hose fitting that's watertight, hook up a hose at the top and a filter to catch the sand at the bottom, and leave it to do its thing while you do something else. That's my rough off the top of my head farmer solution. I'm sure if I have 2 or 3 ideas to do that job, you'll have 10 or 15 you can come up with that are a bit more sophisticated but efficient from that lol
All the stoves I make are strictly for outdoor use only. Once you start making stuff to go inside it's a very different kettle of fish in regards to regulations and insurance. Great seeing your beautiful wife helping in this video. I have a machinist friend that uses coiled steel springs inserted in copper pipe in place of your sand. I’m not sure where he sourced his springs or how long they are but I can ask if you are interested. Will your be compressing the loose coil or two down into the stack? On The Outsider, another RU-vid channel, a Canadian used a copper coil that was inside a kettle of sand to heat water. The sand acted like a heat battery that continued to transfer heat as the campfire burned out. The thermal siphon was used to heat water to keep his camper sled warm during winter nights. That's a cool video. Thanks for sharing it. You've got me thinking. 👍 And I would be interested in the springs. I have seen something similar used by electricians when bending PVC pipe. @@LittleAussieRockets I doubt it would be convenient without some specialized equipment, but one episode of "How It's Made" showed a trombone manufacturer using ice with some soap added before bending.
I owe you an apology. I had the sequence wrong; my friend advised that the pipes to be nene are places inside snug fitting steel coiled spring (think overhead garage doors) and then bent. These coils are purchased from local big box lumber & hardware stores.
