Grow delicious sweet corn fresh from your own garden! Sweet corn is one of the most well versed vegetables of all. It just goes good with about everything! On the cob or cut off it will always make for a delicious meal.
I started planting my own corn about 10or 11 years ago and haven’t missed a year yet. When I first started I had know idea what I was doing. I started off with one of the push from behind hand seeders. I would work the ground and make my very crooked rows. I had no way to fertilize it, but to throw some to the side of the row by hand. It worked, but my corn was not going to win anything at the the fair.
One day when planting my corn with my old hand push planter my Uncle came by. He sat and watched me for a few minutes with a odd look on his face. Finally he asked me “What in the $&@! are you doing?”. So I explained my corn planting process to him. Being the rough old farmer he was he laughed and made fun of me. I think somewhat out of disbelief.
My Uncle was a tough old farmer that loved to pick on you, but if you ever needed anything he was the first to be there. After he saw me struggling to get much of anything out of my corn crop. He took me under his wing. He let me use his planter and helped me plant my own corn. He showed me everything to do and when to do it. We would talk for hours about different planters, seed plates, and what they were used for.
Finally I got a planter of my own. The first person that I had to show it off to was my Uncle. He helped me get it set up just write so that the spacing and depth would be correct. Now I can take the knowledge he gave to me and share it with others.
