Foam Squishies DIY Tutorial. In this foam casting tutorial video, we show how to safely make foam squishies using Smooth-On FlexFoam-iT! III liquid expanding urethane foam.

FlexFoam-iT! III is two liquids that you mix together and pour. The mixture expands 15 times its original volume and cures to a soft, flexible foam.
The liquid foam is mixed, and then is poured into a silicone baking mold. This produces a foam casting which looks like a real cake or other baked good.
The cast urethane foam piece is painted with brightly colored fabric paint for a glossy, flexible surface. You can create any color combination you can imagine!

So if you want to create your own mold, what would you cast into for this material? What would not adhere to the foam?

Hi. What other paints besides "fabric" paint can be used. Also,what types of paints will not adhere to the foam?thanks

fabric paint is the only one that works. i prefer the brands puffy paint and scribbles paints. you dont want to use acrylic paint because it creaks a lot and fabric paint is flexible hence it being called fabric paint because its made to be flexible. ive heard mixing shaving foam into acrylic paint will make it flexible! :D

The squishes we made with the Flex Foam-iT III were not as slow rising as in the video. Is this likely due to a slightly imprecise 1:2 ratio or environmental factors (humidity)? In short, what makes the squishies more slow-rising? Thank you!

You can use So-Strong or UVO colorants.

What can you use to give the foam pigment/color besides the uvo and so-stong? Can mixing in some regular paint work?

Not usually. The moisture in paint causes curing issues.

It seems like the foam comes out of molds with a glossy surface. Is there a way to achieve a matte surface on the bare foam?

The surface of the original model will determine the surface finish of the mold, which will in turn determine the surface of the casting.

I recently made a 2 piece mold from Moldstar 15 of a skull. It's very similar to the video you have on here Would flex foam it 3 work to cast a foam skull in a 2 piece mold?

Absolutely! You may want to use a release such as Ease Release 2831 before casting the foam in order to maintain a good skin on the casting.

@@graamissouri3389 Do not use Universal Mold Release by itself, or any other silicone based release agents. This will collapse the foam.

That's what I was afraid of! And it's too late in the week to order anything and get it by the weekend :-( Hopefully my local craft/hobby store will have something. If not you all will be getting another order from me in a couple hours lol.

@@graamissouri3389 Release is optional when casting foam in a silicone mold, but with a higher-expansion foam, it can help the thin 'skin' release better in some cases.

When you say to mix A and B "thoroughly" in their respective jars, do you mean for a minute? More? It's hard to tell if it's well mixed when it is clear in the first place.

This would depend on how the material is mixed. The goal is to ensure the Part A and B have no settling of components.

It says it has a limited life. Does this mean what you pour out? or the container itself. To rephrase that, do you mean that if I open the bottles, I need to use the entire thing?

No, you do not need to use the entire kit. Keep the bottles sealed and stored at room temperature for the longest shelf life.

Jamie, out pourable urethane foams have a shelf life of 6 months to 1 year when stored properly. As for altering a rigid foam to become flexible, unfortunately there is no way to do that by altering the mix ratio.

It expands to about 15 times its initial size as mentioned in the video. I guess the amount poured in the video is a good starting point to guess how much you want to pour.

If you have somewhere for the overflow to go you should fill it slightly more than 1/15th of the way. If you don't, what are you doing?!

Our donut Squishies seem to deflate about 7 minutes I to the curing process. They look great at first, then deflate so the donuts have a somewhat flat top. The bottom of the squishy is round and slow rising....what could we be doing wrong? Thanks!

There are reasons why it comes out hard, or deflates. You have to mix the foam really well. In fact, the B is best to be used with a rapid mix. Then you have to mix it again really fast once it’s combined. Another reason is you could be in a too cold environment. The temperature should be 23 C. I’m not sure what the F equivalent is. Also for more squish you’re supposed to add just a little more than double the B mixture.
