Re safety ... my foster father died from emphysema, caused by a combination of spray painting and smoking. Sure powder coating is safer than spray painting, but your lungs are like wet tissue paper ... and generally you only get one set. So treat them with respect ... because breathing is kind of important.
As a DIYer that is gradually developing into a more commercial or service related manufacturing role and as a result am machining things like composite(fiberglass, carbon fiber), plastic, wood, aluminum, not having a early death from exposure to things like fiberglass dust is a focus.
I started powder coating about 4 months ago and love it. Easy and so much fun. In US, get powder from Prismatic or Columbia and wear a respirator not a simple mask. Glad to see you're coating your projects, learning new skills and sharing your enthusiasm.
This is a really good video on how to do it at home. Just wanted to mention that if you preheat your parts, you most likely won't be able to cleanly blow off the powdercoating since some of it will instantly flow out when touching hot metal. I have heard of this technique being called "hot flocking". It's to powdercoat things like glass since it's not easy to make the glass have an electrostatic charge.
Fantastic instructional video on budget diy powder coating. Your attention to details on safety and methods is excellent. You give me the knowledge and confidence to set up my own coating room. Thanks! 👍👍
Quick tip regarding the short milling scene: you should have milled the other way around (counter clockwise) it's a concept often taught in the context of manual mills because the cutting pressure presses against the direction of motion, so the mill can't use the slack in the axis spindle to 'jump around'... Well if you have ball screws this theoretically shouldn't be a problem, however I found that in non industrial/budget mills it's best to stick to that practice because they tend to have some give... Try it, it might work better.. seeing the build up on the edge of the part I highly suspect that.. if your parts are getting undersize then (measure the edge, it might get crooked) you can try to use a bigger endmill or your machine has too much flex..
If you are bending aluminum, it's best to buy the right alloy as some are better for bending than machining ( even though you have to do both ). I had to make a motorcycle rack which needed bending. The metal supplier said to use 5052 H32 and it bent quite nicely. Also, be careful of too tight of a bend radius as you may end up with stress cracks. Very well done video Nik.
100% ^^^ When I was doing my electronics technician apprenticeship, which included some mechanical shop work, I had to remake an enclosure because someone had mixed up the types of sheet aluminum, and gave me a piece that was the wrong alloy. It cracked visibly when bending it on the brake.
Very nice, thanks for sharing! I'm also from Europe, and when I built my paint booth (for spray painting) I also could not find a box fan to use. I went with a design similar to yours and I chose kitchen cooker extractor filters for air filtering. They are sold in larger sheets I can cut to my custom size with scissors and they work quite well.
Dobra robota!
Very cool. Try implementing a plexiglass door to have it enclosed (like those DIY sandblasting rigs) while installing some form of blow out filter. Awesome work.
Keep up the good work Nikodem. I plan to try and make the Indy Mill soon. My daughter is getting married next weekend and that has been costing lots of money. Once we get to the spring hopefully I will have the funds to start on that project. I really love your projects.
I used to work during summers for an industrial paint company during summers, they taught me how to do it in like 10 minutes. The only "difficult" part is to make sure everything is absolutely clean and nothing touches the powdered part.
Thank you very much for sharing. Nicely done. You earned a subscriber. I am only mentioning this since you mentioned pronunciation; your English is really quite good. In fact, I'd say it's exceptional. It seems like you care about your pronunciation, so I'm only pointing this out constructively. "Booth" was very understandable immediately. Your "th" was slightly "f" like in sound. Say "Boo" "think" then combine dropping the "ink" - "booth". The only word that took me a second to realize what you said was "bearing". Your pronunciation sounded too similar to "bring". Remember, "bare" like naked and "bear" the animal are said the same. Say the animal "bear" then add your "ing". That was me at my most discerning, so well done!
An ingenious design! As simple as possible, except for fans with ESC. Fans could be installed ready-made with an asynchronous motor. It would be even cheaper (considering the cost of the power supply and ESC's). I really liked the painting camera! In particular, the lighting is well done - it evenly illuminates and does not shine in the eyes - and all this is achieved by using simple corner profiles! Although, again, there are LED bulbs available that are powered from an outlet rather than a power supply.
Wow. I have No clue why I watched this😜 I have no intentions to powdercoat anything. BUT: I watched the whole video until the end because it was interesting and you're a pretty cool Dude and explain very well. So thanks for entertaining and educating me, I guess. Gonna subscribe anyway, because your channel is 👌. Greetings from here to there.😊
Finally, audio quality is ok. There is still room for improvement but its much much better than it was before in your videos. Also, you don't want to inhale mdf particles that gets produced with drilling and cutting.
ground the grip then you will be grounded unless you want to be covered in powder like right now- your face mask pulls powder. Mostly professionall equipement is making grounding on the hand grip of a powder gun and you don't wear a glove.
I'm very interested in the wind tunnel you mentioned. I spent a couple years on a similar project with mixed success. Our problem was with turbulence above an unfortunately low speed.
Maybe use electric charge for the filters? I mean, the paint will stick to charged materials. Maybe some metal strips (alu, copper etc) that can ve electrically charged. Or a plastic or glass rod that you wipe with a wool cloth. Or those static electricity generators, which I forgot the name of.
It's amazing to me that you don't have box fans.. I figured they would be everywhere. Cheap, big, moves tons of air and fits in a window. Could probably have just used PC fans instead of making your own? but they wouldn't have been as big.
Is there ever a problem with the electrical connection from the hanging loop at the top through the hook and to the part to be coated? Does the connection areas have to be cleaned/sanded after getting coated? Very cool what you have done.
Why not use computer fans instead of your custom fans? Those little brushless motors are really expensive arent they? Computer fans can be combined together the same way you have done. I think they sell fairly large ones too.
If the rotating hanging loop was fixed to a slip ring connected to ground would be awesome, you probably wouldn’t need to move the ground wire with the alligator clip away from the part to paint. Congrats on the project! I looks great!
The loop where I hang the parts touches the bearing and there is a screw screws through the plastic so that it touches the bearing and to that screw I attach the aligator clip. So, yes, the cable is away and it doesn't disturb the painting.

How good protection can powder coating give for outdoor use, or outdoor near the ocean (salt can be a problem)? Can you cover with some type of of rust protection before powder coating? I saw a video where someone baked bare metal parts heating the metal first in flame torch and then added oils. It made a protective film. Could powder coating stick to such a part?
Hi Nikodem, do you plan to publish your "box fan" design? I'm currently in the process of looking up the alternatives as they are also not available here (Czech Republic). If it's somewhere already, sorry for bothering. Thanks
Excellent ! Did you try to coat graphite powder with this approach so that you can do plastic electroplating work ? Or is it too dangerous / infeasible ?
Is there anyway to powder cost plastic parts? 3D Printed parts, low heat annealing without warping could a powder coat be found that would cure at those temps???? My Micro Mill used some of your Dremel CNC parts. It just needs X Y Stepper adaptors to complete for test. You are having so much fun and help So many get into whatever this is called. DIY Maker Stuff. Dennis
Can you get some PEI powder and powder coat some spring steel sheets? This is something I have wanted to do for about 5 years now, but I dont live in a place where I can do this.
Can you just wire all 3 fans in parallel and use with single ESC? That's basicaly same as using multiple 3 phase motors connected to single 3 phase supply, which is quite common right?
Ace to hear your from poland, i dont know if its living in the uk or what but i pretty much never see Polish creators. But i do have to say, so much to say about not breathing in all the bad stuff but then you breathe in the soildering smoke 🤔
4:50 Please do an audio filter pass on the high frequency stepper motor noise if you're printing in the background, I nearly ran to my workshop next room thinking that something was breaking :D
Do you think laser toner would be an acceptable substitute to powder coating ink? I have an endless supply of this. There are metals in the CMYK toners I have.
@@nikodembartnik we use big rack who get powder coated and they have so much coat on it that's the ground would not work properly so sometimes you becomes the ground ⚡one guy manage to put the thing on fire 😐 the company I was working for make electronic road sign the one ending by mac ...
