DIY Press Brake - How To Build A Press Brake

Like many of my DIY tools, I'm doing a project that requires me to bend 90 degree corners and while I do have a small HR metal brake, I find that it doesn't produce great corners. So I decided to build a hydraulic press brake with a 20 ton bottle jack.
Where to purchase a few of the parts I used.

Good Project. Save your arm and get a air over hydraulic 20 ton jack. I got mine a HF and bend a lot of 1/4" HRS. Thanks

Для таких заготовок можно домкрат с меньшим усилием. Будет быстрее опускаться и подниматься.

Love it Doug! A bottle jack press will actually be our next RU-vid video too but we’re using it for squishing plastic into moulds and maybe bookbinding 👍🏼 great stuff dude

That's excellent! I want to try and press shapes in sheet metal. Next I'll build some dies to see if I can make that work. I like the book binding idea. I saw Diresta's book making video and now i really want to make one myself

Man I'm lucky (am I really though?) that I work at Harbor Freight! At $25 (with my discount) for a 12 ton bottle jack and MAYBE $50 in steel I'm about to build a better shop press than the ones HF sells for a third of the price. No more janky bending with my hand seamer! I also used one of Harbor Freight's ventilator fans to build the fume extraction system shown in another video. Thanks again for the how-to's!!!

Once again Doug you have just made me shake my head and have a smile on my face. To take scrap and make something you will need and use is just brilliant. Great work Doug. And congrats on the high number of subscribers you are getting. Keep it up.

Thanks DJ! Keeping scrap is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes I feel like my shop is becoming a junkyard. Luckily I have a project coming up that may deplete some of what I have in stock....and make room for more stuff :) haha

Hey Doug! Really enjoyed the video. I’m sure you have many savvy followers on here but I figured I’d throw a tip in if you haven’t already been told. I work as a foreman for a structural steel company out of MA. I usually do all of the press brake work, we have a 1940’s - 1950’s era 10’ 200 ton Cleveland brake that’s capable of bending up to 10’ of 1/4” and 5’ of 1/2” if you really give it the business. Anyways, I saw your issue with the back gauge as you were saying for smaller bends you wouldn’t be able to use it because it wouldn’t get close enough. We don’t have a back gauge in ours so we made two little shelves that we can stretch a piece of angle iron across on. If we’re doing small bend (for example a 3/4” outside bend on a piece of 1/8”. Standard practice being that your bottom die is 8x the width of your material thickness so a 1” die / 1/2” from bend line to edge of the landing leaving 1/8” of overhang with respect to material thickness) we will often times throw a little 2” or so piece of material onto our shelves so it can extend on to the top of the back landing of the die. Since you have that little piece of angle as your stop, it may be worthwhile to add in one or two more of those back gauges, bend a 2”x4” piece of angle out of 20 gage and clamp it to the back gage so you can extend beyond the back face of the channel. Just make sure the leg that’s being used as a stop is consistent throughout. If you have a 1/16” variance from end to end it’s going to show in the work piece. Also if you have 3 stops you can expand into working with cuts that are cupped or have a crown (it’s more common than you’d think on thinner pieces of material, 16 gage and under). Sorry for rambling and making a mountain out of a mole hill! Cool build and if you’d like some more little tips, or you’d like me to draw out what I’m talking about for you, feel free to let me know. Hope you’re well, stay safe and keep at it!

Pretty neat, it's interesting what you can do with bottle jacks. If I need one, I could buy it at one of our TSC Stores/Peavey Marts in Canada. They have a shelf full of bottle jacks.

it was cool how you had things cut to size then hand assembled the parts the Insert idea for 45's is great may I suggest you radius your 90* cut corners for a nicer look Great Build - thumbs up / subbed 'gonna see what else you've made

Hey Doug, like the build, doesn't the ram typically taper to a blunt edge for a brake? I guess it works anyway. It's cold like that here in Florida as well. 🥶
@ArtfullyRogue
@ArtfullyRogue 4 года назад
Yes it does. I may have edit that out for some reason but I beveled the edge as opposed to it being flat
