I made this exact one following your directions and my two cockatiels love it so much! They like it because of how tall it is and how I made it so they can get to the very top. I used self adhesive sports wrap to give the birds grip on the PVC poles. Thank you!

You're like, "Oh, well this one looks like it will be A LOT MORE portable than my other one; I'M TAKING IT!" heheh... And I have girl cockatiels; they think PVC is too much of man's gym.

You're crazy! No, I'm leaving my old one here because it wasn't so portable. This one will be easier to fold up and put in the car because of how I placed the perches. :) I can help you make one for your cockatiels if you like! Dad's cockatiels are on it all the time.

Love it ! It took me forever to figure out how to connect bowls. I did the same as you did plus by using the caps for the bowls they can be removed for cleaning ! My little green cheeks look like yours.

Honestly loved the video thanks for the inspiration but I REALLY need more details for example- I have no idea what kind of food dishes those are? I've only ever had the kind that attach to the cage directly so it has like, a very short (greater than 1/2) bolt with like a washer and a nut to install it with. Anyone else possibly have a suggestion?? Cause I've already been googling and cannot seem to search for the right thing lol thanks!

I am curious. You have two different versions of this play gym in the video. One with a single 90 degree elbow and one with two 45 degree elbows. What are the measurements for the more stable one with the 2 45 elbows at the top? Thanks.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting your tutorial! I made one this afternoon with 3/4" pvc for my nanday conure and goffin cockatoo. They are already enjoying it!

Good step by step instructions for making this gym - thanks. One thing I did to make the pvc gym even more colorful for my bird is to use colored pvc. You can get all of these pvc parts - pipes and different types of fittings/joints - in a wide range of colors. Best part - they're not that much more expensive than the std white pvc equivalents. (Best prices and color choices are on Formufit_dot_com). Choosing colors and how to blend them together into an attractive pvc "sculpture" made this DIY project much more fun and creative for me. It looks good by itself before I even add the toys, ropes, bowls, and other accessories. Of course, parrots appreciate all the color too because they have even better color perception than we have with the addition of an ultraviolet color receptor in their eyes (besides the 3 we have too - red, blue, green). I shined an ultraviolet light on the gym and parts as I assembled them to help me imagine what it will look like to my B&G Macaw. Tip: Fit them together first to see how they look together before you go back and permanently cement them. In fact, I'm not cementing mine at all because the fit quite snugly without cement and I want to be able to disassemble and reassemble it, if I want to try a different configuration and to make it much easier to move within the house or via my car. Regarding what size pvc pipe to use, it depends on the size and grip of your bird: Before I ordered all the colored pipe and joints I need, I made an investment of less than $5 at my local home improvement store for small std white pieces of the pipe sizes I was considering. I brought them home and had my macaw stand on each one. I observed how well he perched on each one and ordered the best size. The other thing I did is build the base with larger pvc pipe than I used for the perch levels to make it more sturdy and "bottom heavy" since Macaws are so acrobatic, it's possible he could topple the stand with his antics during peak playtime if the bottom wasn't stable enough. You can buy adapter fittings to connect different size pipes. For any fitting not available in the color you want, use a std white fitting. I made double sure the gym wouldn't tip over by buying 4 modern equivalents of "sand bags"/"bean bags" and draping one over each bottom pipe. This also helps hold the gym down in strong winds since I keep it outside on my screened-in lanai (we live in Florida so he can be out there year-round). To give him a better grip on his favorite perching and climbing pipes, I wrapped some of it with colored vet tape (available online in a variety of colors, including a multi-color pack). I also scored some of it with a rough file, just enough to take the slipperiness off of the pipe surface, not so rough that it's abrasive on his feet - like a pvc equivalent of sandy perches. p.s. I've been caring for companion birds for over 20 years, as many as 8 birds, 6 different species, at a time (I ran a private animal rescue/sanctuary). So I'm very experienced with birds. I used to buy expensive pre-made gyms and accessories. I had to leave them all in CA when I moved because too expensive to move them. Now that I'm retired, I have to go the DIY route on a lot of things I used to buy. Best of luck and enjoyment with your own parrot care! Thanks again for the excellent vid, XoletteLife!

The pipe surface is a little slick for the birds to grasp and climb. To remedy this, I got some double-sided tape, wrapped the tape around areas like the long poles and the food cups and toy perches then got some of that medical tape that sticks to itself, cut the tape width in half and wrapped the tape over the double-sided tape with a little of the ends of the tape overlapping the end of the pipe so I could cover those with the cap. We'll see how it holds up. I think it'll be fine for awhile. I hope my birds don't want to knaw it apart into little pieces! Another way to handle the surface is to sand it and put notches in the pipe surface.

If you don't want to go out and buy a pvc cutter a large curated knife does the job, just sand down the cut ends to make them safe again.

I took the general design of this and made a little idea for the stand. Now I have a small scale model of the bird perch stand made of skewers. So now I just have to wait until I have someone to help me build it. Lol. :) also mine isn't going to be as large, but I like it. :)

Very impressive! Question 1: It looks like the water dish might actually be hanging out beyond the boundaries of the wire drawer at the bottom, is that correct? But even if it is within the boundary, you're going to have water splash that falls beyond the boundaries of the wire drawer? So, is the entire gym placed inside a larger container at the bottom, e.g. a plastic container? Question 2: I like the stop motion animation. Did you do this using photos? Or did you continuously film it, and then only select frames that you had stepped out of? Question 3: What software did you use to create the final stop motion animation? loved the stop motion on this... it allowed me to really see how everything was put together. I was on Etsy looking at the pricing on some of these! goodness! some sell for 200$$$.. and you spent a little over $20 =O
