Sewing a reusable cloth menstrual pad with a layer of waterproof PUL. Handmade By Hedi
Materials used: ↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓
1. I use zorb 3d heavy duty as a core. Zorb is incredibly absorbent and can be bought at wazoodle.com
2. Extra layer of PUL (polyurethane laminate) a waterproof fabric, yet still breathable.
3. For topper fabric (that goes against the skin) I use (here) 100% COTTON, but you can also use minky, cotton flannel and performance pique.
3. For backing I use anti-pill FLEECE. Fleece helps the liquid not leak. In this case the leakproof will be much aided by the PUL layer.
When Using PUL you can really use any fabric as a backer.
Pattern is Moonrise by Versodile
(she has an etsy shop and fb group)
The machine I use is the BROTHER XR3140
needle is ball point, size 80/12
I hope you enjoy this and please leave a like 👍 and subscribe.

I use Poise pads for bladder leaks and knew these homemade ones would work well and save me money. So, using what I have on hand I made my first one today and cut out cores for 35 more! I used a cotton topper, 4 layers of flannel, 1 layer of a piece of upholstery fabric and then anti-pill fleece. Upholstery fabric? What? Yes! I get lots of free swatches from a local furniture store and it so happens that some are perfect for pads! (squishy and soft with a water resistant backing) I wish I could post pictures here to show you! Thank you for the video!

I've watched so many videos on making cloth pads. Yours is my favorite. No fussing or making things overly complicated. Strange shapes or "making your own fabrics...ect. they are a reliable shape and don't take long to make. Both very important if you have a stash to make & have a busy life outside of having periods. Lol (I think that's all of us). One extra step I seem to like, is to sew flow lines into my top & fill layer prior to doing the back & PUL layer. Especially since my pads that include PUL are for longer wear or heavy flow needs.

What’s a flow line and what does that do? Thanks
@HediSalm
@HediSalm 4 года назад
Flow line is just a straight line across the top. But ONLY sewn through the topper and the core, NOT pul (if you are using) and backer. Otherwise you will ruin the pad and will bleed through. Flow line might help the blood to stay in the middle.

One thing I'll add for other people reading the comments: maybe it was the cotton I used, maybe I just don't scrub enough, but I used light colored cotton and there are light stains that I haven't been able to get out. I'm okay with this, but I'm making some more and I'm going to be using dark cotton so that leftover stains aren't as noticeable. Thank you so much, Hedi! I made some pads using this video and they're WONDERFUL! I also use your cleaning method. This video is my go-to, and I love how sparkly your nails are. :)

Thank you for this, I made my first pad last night with the hidden pul. I made a bunch of liners for myself but did not hide the pul, and I found that they are slippery with the pul against the undies...so now I will be hiding it! I’m making pads for Operation Christmas Child boxes, for the older girls.

hi! Thank you so much for this video. Just wondering, why does the shiny side of the PUL go down? Will there be leak if I ever accidentally put it the other way? Might be a stupid question, sorry if it is.
@HediSalm
@HediSalm 4 года назад
In reality it doesn't matter which way you put it. But when putting it together this way, the shiny side ends up towards the core (once it's sewn and turned out. This way the shiny side gets in contact with the core and keeps the liquids in (when dove the other way the fabric side is towards the core and while it will also keep the liquids in, it might disperse the liquids, because the fabric might absorbed some..... But really it doesn't matter a whole lot. It will all be stopped by the shiny layer eventually 😊😊😊

I need to make some of these. Thank you so much for this instructional video! Can you tell me exactly which zorb 3D fabric to get at Wazoodle? I see that there are three or four to choose from. Bamboo, Cotton, Lite. Also I see they've come out with a 4D. Have you tried that? If so, do you like it better than the 3D?

I have 'pretty' PUL fabric, so the fabric side of it has a picture printed on it, the shiny side is white. Could I skip the fleece layer & just have PUL, core & cotton topper? Or would this not work? Lovely clear instructions thank you.

Would this be considered a moderate or heavy?
@HediSalm
@HediSalm 27 дней назад
Hi, I would still use this as moderate, but I'd say you can use it for heavy as it has the PUL layer. Normally I'd add 1 more layer of core (absorbent) layer, just to have even more absorbency.

Polyurethane Laminate - waterproof layer, it's thin and still breathable. Its also used to make waterproof sheets for beds, for when you might have night time "accidents". It is great for preventing any kind of leaks.
