PVC...the Big Kid's tinker toys!!! I make a firearms target stand out of PVC. Work well. Just make sure to fill the bottom with sand. I did the same thing to my kayak. I put a relief cut in the PVC prior to heating it. I also built a set of outriggers for fly fishing. I used the jumbo sized floaties for increased buoyancy. I also made a PVC frame for a mosquito net to go over my Army cot for when I am camping. Your beer bottle used to flare the rod holder? Genius!! Love your creative ways and thought process. Now go fishing and have some fun.

Great idea, like the beer bottle trick. The best part about that trick is you get to empty the beer bottle first ! Keep-um coming, tight lines !

I don't know if your a genius or just cheap. Maybe a little of both I never knew you could manipulate PVC with heat that much. Using the beer bottle to flare the end was great. Love the giant tikis in the background. Thanks for sharing.

Hey this is a great video DIY, and like you, I use a lot of pvc pipe for everything and what i learned is if you heat the pipe up to much it becomes very flimsy witch makes it flex to much with force. so as a tip heat it up a little less and it will be more pliable. Also i use a heat gun and it doest leave those bad burn marks. Hope this will help.

U DA MAN. Super vid Marty. F.Y.I. There is a tip for propane torches that spread the flame thereby making burning of the pvc less likely. Try it to avoid those burn spots. Keep them coming Marty.

Necessity is the mother of invention and the same applies to fishing. I like how the rod holders spread the rod tips. That can come in hand if you're doing some slow trolling.

That's why it is very important to drink beer while doing this. Beer washes down the toxins and then you peee the toxins out destroying the eco system.

you could attach the 1 1/2 PVC to a hand drill (make some kind of hub with a plumbers pressure test plug or something), get it spinning and apply the area needing to be reduced to a running belt sander......works pretty good at reducing diameters evenly.

Marty, check out 4:35, where you put the gas burner down... You came sooooo close to cooking your rod tip there buddy. Although I did notice after a little twisting and turning of your piece of pvc that the flame was out. Great video thanks mate. I shall be using the very same idea (courtesy of your good self) when I get my Hobie next spring. All the best and thanks again :)

CPVC has a smaller outside diameter than PVC 1-1/2" CPVC will fit in the rod holders perfectly, without heating. A word of caution. If you are going to heat either CPVC or PVC, do it in a well ventilated area. They both give off carcinogens and can cause serious lung damage.

Hi Marty, Really enjoy your videos. One thing to be careful of when applying flames to the PVC pipe. I know from personal experience that it can put off some really toxic fumes during the heating and especially if it starts to turn black or burn. Just don't want to lose one of my favorite You Tube movie makers. You are the Man! Thanks for all you nice videos. John
@philhays2715
@philhays2715 8 лет назад
+helicopterjohns whenPVC = PolyVinyl Chloride is heated/burned it releases toxic hydrogen chloride gas, forming deadly hydrochloric acid. Dangerous especially in house/building fires. I agree: we don't want to lose you or anyone else!

I don't know if Hobie's molded rod holders are different diameter, but a much easier way to fit in most rod holders is to cut a slit only on one side. The cut allows the the PVC to contract just enough... even the width of a hack saw blade is enough (the first saw you used to cut-off to install angle would be enough). It is just as tight as using heat to melt the PVC. You can use a jig saw, hack saw, dremel, etc. Here is a photo of example: img822.imageshack.us/img822/3446/1000177n.jpg EDIT: 1 1/2" PVC

Question Marty, Instead of using the angled coupling, couldn’t you heat up the pipe and put a little bend in it. I’ve seen people fill the pvc with sand before heating to prevent it from kinking. Just sayin’

I had a similar issue with my Future Beach 160 Angler. I refuse to pay big kayak manufacturing Czars mega bucks for something I can country gal rig something. I took sand put it in the pvc pipe duct taped end keep it from spilling out the took a heat gun to in to quickly but gently bend it ...the sand helps distribute the heat even .and keeps it from kinking into a fine mess..After your done empty out sand . ; )
