just finished building one using your instructions, including the metal plates (thinner tho) rivetted to the bottom. Since before all I needed to backstop an air rifle was a phone book. Just got a regulated .30 throwing 50 plus grain pellets at around 800fps, so needed to step up my game. and since I live in an apartment with no back yard, and live in a city so paranoid about "guns" that they call the cops on a woman doing a cosplay photoshoot with a ridiculously anime-sized cartoon rifle, I needed something like this to tune and modify without having to make a special appointment (yay covid!) to spend $12 to use a rifle range lane. the spongy mat you suggested really makes the whole thing work a lot better than the "bucket full of cloth strips" I was recommended earlier. Looks almost professional now. I ended up cutting the matting with a big set of very sharp utility shears.
Shears why didn't i think of that it would have made things a lot easier. Glad you found the video so useful and hope you get out with your .30cal soon.
I've made mine very similar to this but your rubber mat is a good addition. I've just put several layers of duct into the recess in the lid but I'm going to get a rubber mat to use next time I have to refresh the lid. Thanks for this idea.
It rains here in England, so being a cheapskate, I knocked together a plywood box,(£3.00) a bit smaller than a card target, about 16" long, and lay this on the bench in the shed at the bottom of the garden. It's filled with old cycle innertubes (free) and is virtually silent. Result!
@@HuntersVermin After a couple of years of changing bicycle inner tubes on our six well-used bicycles - I live in the Netherlands, see -, I recon I have a box full of them. Tomorrow I am going to mix your idea and that of Summoning Dark and make a sturdy silent target of a plastic box with a fat plywood bottom, rubber matting on top of that, a mix of inner tubes and some rubber granulate in front of that, and a cover with some clothing or a piece of that foam stuff to keep it all in. Target practice in silent mode, here I come!
I use butyl rubber pond liner for the front of my pellet trap, as it seems to seal quite well (1mm hole for .22 pellets). I'm using leftover bits, but it might be another option.
Iv'e been using the smaller granules with great success , regarding the fi crony if you fix a couple of battery led lights to the underside of the diffuser over the sensors it works a treat 👍
Yeah i tried that with little success but then i might have been using the wrong sort of lights, and once i got the FX radar in my hands i used it instead problem solved.
So im about to make this very pellet trap, is there anything you would change now that its been a good while? Im wanting to make this so i can tune my Redwolf and my Fx M3 in the comfort of my garage, good imformative video.
Glad you found the video so useful, i don't think i would change anything but someone commented instead of just smashing through the plastic lid why not cut the middle away but you'd have to replace it with some thin plywood to stop the rubber mulch falling out so not sure if its off any benefit or not.
@@HuntersVermin well i made your trap and i must say its so damn simply but so useful, and i think i will just keep botching it with duct tape over the rubber mat and not bother sticking plywood or anything until it gives out,and just replace the box because £10 aint gonna break the bank! Its a great idea and the best bit is you can just keep re-using the mulch.
I use a small cardboard box packed with rubber pellets with a 1/2" plywood bottom. Works great for my 1000 FPS pellet rifles. I've never had a pellet go through. US Military Veteran and Patriot
MY god David,...one of 'him' is enough hahaha! .....what a time;y video! I was thinking about making a target/trap for some indoor plinking too. I have a 2" thick memory foam mattress topper and was wondering is that, cut into separate pieces and laid on top of each to fill a basket ( we call these , totes ) with layer upon layer of this dense memory foam..should work,..I'll soon find out. This looks like a fine idea. Thank you!
There's plenty of seller's on ebay but here's were i got it. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20kg-Rubber-chippings-sample-for-hen-and-other-livestock-bedding-enclosures/303130829252?hash=item46940161c4:g:bFoAAOSwCfdXocZ4
That's was a really good idea mate I might have to make one or sumthing simpler as I am using wood atm yes wood works but all the rain we get in the uk and leaving it outside soon ruains the wood lol
Yeah the wet weather is the reason i made the trap so i could do a bit of testing indoors were its dry and warmer. And there's plenty of other pellet or bullet trap videos on RU-vid to get inspiration from.
If the weather will clear up so i can get out on a Saturday to hunt without getting drowned in a down poor or blew off the planet with gusty winds i'll hopefully get some decent footage decoying crows or magpies.
Well its got a lot more holes in it as I've shot a few hundred rounds at it but the rubber floor mate is still holding its own and not letting any of the rubber mulch fall out yet.
Expensive but real nice gun and very accurate in FAC with the 18gr JSB and you can tune it to different pellets but i don't like the extendable shroud as the zero changes from when you move it in or out so you tend to leave it in one position all the time. I think if i was doing it again i'd go for the newer crown continuum.
Pellets are so expensive I just shoot them into rabbits and feathered vermin, nor of that shooting into a box business, Ulster Scot through and through! Hi David,
Once the center of the lid is shot out, cut out the honeycomb pattern on the lid ( 6:57 ), leaving a rectangular opening / ring. Now when you use up the foam on the exterior, take the lid off, insert a new piece of foam (couple of layers of cardboard, carpet, etc ), and reattach the lid ring to hold the new foam in place. Cheers
Yeah after i had the whole thing done i thought just that, why didn't you just put the foam mat on the inside of the box, but i'll maybe do that on the mk2 model.
Yes you could do that but the rubber mulch is so heavy i don't think the target alone would be able to hole it back especially after you have shot it full of holes.
I use cardboard boxes, wrap some jeans around the inner side of the boxes and fill them full of rubber mulch. The stuff works great for stopping lead. I need to make me some of these outside containers. Great video.
What a great idea. My current outdoor backstop is quite a few electronic catalogs in an amazon box covered in gaffer tape placed in front of a paving slab for good measure. The amazon box is on its last legs now so now I’m being inspired by your backstop idea. Thanks for sharing.
Haha this is the very first video I watched from you. Been subscribed for several months now and watched tons of ur videos. Just getting around to make a new/better pellet trap. Also looking for a good entry level PCP that can "grow" with me. What a pain in the rear! O well...keep up the good work buddy, I really enjoy your stuff.
The back metal plate is a good idea but you really don't need it appellate will never travel even halfway through that container you could probably shoot bulletin would not go through the rubber mulch
I got it in Homebase but i can't find it on their website anymore and i can't remember the manufacturers name but if you try looking on amazon for (anti fatigue mat) you'l find plenty of them just make sure you get a big enough one for your box.
Excellent video and something I now intend to copy as I want something that minimises the sound of the pellet impact when I I'm shooting in the garden Do you have a link to the mat you used as when I've been checking on line they seem to be extremely expensive and I got the impression that the one you used was in a similar price range to the box and mulch? Thanks
@@HuntersVermin Thanks I certainly have tried googling it but all I can find are very very expensive items but will keep trying. In the meantime I have a piece of foam block matting (used in play areas) which I will try. Thanks again for the excellent and informative video.
@@HuntersVermin it would still be cheaper than spending 20 quid on rubber and say what 3quid plus on a box and time its a good idea i am not knocking it if you go or know a gun club member you can get off cuts of that rubber stuff that they have for rimfire and centerfire rifles but as for a sub 12ft pounder a simple bit of wood with foam on spray glued onto it stops any bounce back and has something to pin your target on that is what i use to use before i got rid of all mine
I use a big old book like a old fat yellow pages or a argos catalogue cocooned in gaffer tape , as the years gone by I just keep wrapping it in tape leaving the target cards on in between the layers of tape and its like the gift that keeps on giving weighs a ton now but it does the job lol may have to try this when I eventually replace it 👍
That sounds like a good cheep way of doing it i tried a card board box stuffed with rags and fiberglass insulation but the 30+ft/lb rifles just cut right though it.
