Just wanted to take a moment and say thank you so much for the captions. I have an auditory processing disorder and being able to read subtitles (that aren’t RU-vid’s auto generated garbage) really helps me understand and retain more of what you teach us. ❤

As a financially challenged teenager who loved sculpting, I could never afford even the cheapest tools. Just getting the clay was hard enough. But I had this moment of inspiration at the dentist office, when I noticed that their dental instruments were basically the same thing. I just asked if they had any discarded tools I could have, and imagine my surprise when they showed me several boxes worth of instruments and told me I was free to grab whatever I wanted! Most of them were of course broken or bent in some way, but usually just at the one end, and even then perfectly useable for sculpting. So I always recommend fellow artists to ask their dentist, and some of them have had the same luck I had.
@wingnutbert9685
@wingnutbert9685 Год назад
Good for you! Never hurts to ask! I've been a professional "artist/craftsman" for 30+ yrs. and I'm like a crow. Everything has potential as either a material to use in the art or a thing to be used as a tool to make the art. Some get too caught up in "the correct" tools. Having the eye and the imagination to take random stuff, garbage, sticks, etc and use them is an art form in itself. I even did the same as you about 3 years ago and sure enough, the dentist handed my a bunch of tools they couldn't use anymore. And a good hint from my experience, is to tell people you're an artist, sculptor, craftsperson and you're wondering it they have any old this or that laying around you could have. People get really interested in you being an artist and are usually more into giving you a hand. I'm in my 50's, so in one respect, my age gives me the ease of life experience (and not giving a poop what people think of me) to talk to people. It's much harder, usually, when you're a teen. I never forget that as I was painfully uncomfortable my whole life! BUT, being polite and not bothering people when they are busy with something, and being a teenager can also be an advantage. Older folks like to see well meaning and well mannered young people taking initiative. Best wishes to you! And never think no budget means no way!

@TheCrafsMan
@TheCrafsMan Год назад
That's a really fantastic suggestion! :D And like a dream come true, right? :D And yes, from what I've seen, metal wax/sculpting tools and dental pics are essentially the same thing. Some slightly different ends (dentists really like the angled ones for getting behind teeth). Also... they use electric wax carvers similar (maybe smaller/more compact and slick) to ones used by toy sculptors who work in the wax medium. Speaking of "dentist", one of my last eBay searches was for one of those overhead arms they use. :) Was seriously going to try and utilize that for making videos. LOL. (Way outside my price range.)

Crafsman you always mention safety on your videos and that’s rad. Because I once was sculpting a rancor and had dropped a razor sharp sculpting tool in my lap. I was sitting in the lotus position. When I got up I kicked that tool with one foot right through my heel and out of the bottom of my foot. I went into the ER and they were all like “ YOU FIRST.” So practice safety because you can’t be safe enough. I appreciate you Crafsman for all you do and your safety standards. Thanks for another great vid.

I needed you today Craftsman. Thanks for the level vibes! If I may add so ideas: -Pen bodies are good handles too for the wire/metal tools. -Chopsticks: Good for handles or craved into tools and usually free! -Some of the big fat knitting needles, both aluminum and plastic make good handles and often have holes in the middle like the dollar store spoons. Get'm at thrift stores. - You can pack a bunch of guitar string pieces into a metal tube and crush the end or epoxy/ crazy glue them in. Makes nice stiff brushes for texturing. - And one of my favourite things you find on the street for free! The brush blades from the street cleaner vehicles! They are thin, flat strips of spring(ish) steel. They fall of as the brush disk sweeps the pavement. usually 8-12" long. Really good for making shaping paddle/sm. spatulas/scapula's(LOL! ;P ) and loop tools.

Yes, excellent ideas! :D The most "ergonomically correct" handle I ever made was from some leftover silicone putty. I mixed up too much so I applied the remaining chunk to an x-acto knife handle - mainly for something to do - and sorta left my fingers formed into it how I would hold it, making a really cozy fit. But I find often times you want just a nice *uniform* thick handle, for tool rotation control. Thank you for watching!

I did make some shapers out of GreenStuff once but they weren't any better than old paint brush handles cut and sanded into a form I needed. I also hold on to any used up pens not just for scratch building and kit bashing but they make excellent scoring tools when I do my paper crafting. I don’t know if anyone else mentioned it yet, for a ribbon tool, you could also use a blackhead/white head removal tool. They often have two different heads that would fit the use of a ribbon tool and I’ve seen them at the Dollar Tree before. Speaking of DT, if you’ve ever picked up their foam sponge brushes, if you have any that are no longer usable, unscrew the foam head and you have a pre-drilled dowel for use. Finally, with Halloween right around the corner, pumpkin carving tools can definitely be helpful too. Just wait for the after-Halloween clearance sales.
