Great tips! It would be hard to watch one of your videos without learning something both useful and important that we could use that same day, no matter how much experience some of us, as viewers, think we have in the home DIY area. Thanks for taking to time to organize and present these videos, and for sharing your knowledge of the tools and products that you have found to be effective in getting the job done.

Thank you for your great, easy-to-understand, home improvement project videos. I am installing a narrower, replacement exterior man door in my garage (from 36" to 32" in width, to accommodate new sensors). As a retired 60+ woman with no prior carpentry experience, this job has been challenging, but fun and gratifying, as well.

Paul I love the videos. Keep it going. I learn something new all the time. On a side note, I was a locksmith for 14 years. The reason the keys get sticky is generally the brass pins inside get flat spots on them. Take the locks to a reputable shop and let them refresh the locks to still fit the existing keys. Fresh pins will make them work like new (providing the keyway isn’t worn out) and homeowner can still carry their same keys. Thanks again buddy.

It's faster and quieter to shim the latch than to kick in the door. This video shows you how to install the latch so it's cardable (you can use a plastic card to bypass the lock). The little pin in the latch must ALWAYS be depressed when the door is closed.

I'm not sure if anybody mentioned it before, but you can use the multitool instead of the chisel. I tried it myself, for the same purpose and it was much faster than chiseling. Make sure to cut the edges first than use the multi tool, to cut out the wood and clean the surface. I used different blade, which had smoother cutting edge, but I was really impressed with the "quality" of the job.

@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 5 лет назад
Hi Brady, Yes, dry lubricants won't attract dirt. Although oily lubricants will work to free locks up, they can cause build up inside the locks because dirt and grime will cling to the oil. One tip. People can use graphite or they can use a spray oil (WD40, TriFlow, etc) but do NOT use both or you get a "muddy" mess. So if you do decide to use a spray oil, be sure the lock does not already have powdered graphite in it already. Always best to use graphite if you do not know. Graphite is also best in areas with high dust levels (dustbowl or desert locations).

1:15 you may think you’re as experienced as this guy. Just don’t do it. Use a screw driver or something to hold the weather strip back. Edit: a strike plate on that door would be pointless unless you had 3M protective film. Even though I’d personally prefer a solid door.

Good tips brother, but you should of used a 1” spade bit, for the deadbolt. Throw away that graphite and use triflow, never use Kwikset use Schlage. You also don’t have to add those screws on the frame because it doesn’t do anything for the security of the door. If some one tried to kick the door in those screws wouldn’t do anything. Now the strike plate is what you want to beef up. Get yourself a security plate where it needs 4 screws. Two 1”-1/2 and two 3” screws. You can get those strike plates from any hardware store.

What do you think about all these "high security" deadbolts claiming Grade1 or "the best security", when a single blank key and a bumping opens the lock within seconds? Schlage, Kwikset, all have zero security in their 5pin design. So you really have a very solid wind stopper, but zero security.
@jurnagin
@jurnagin 5 лет назад
Phil Indeblanc a alarm system can be installed and that's the 2nd layer of defense the first layer is security door and third layer is entry door! Beef up your entry doors with metal plates and long screws, but with a alarm the burglar will run before they actually get into house!

For those who have conflicting opinions on Graphite. I have been using it on my locks for years and it has always worked for me. I use it on basic residential locks and usually change them out every few years due to tarnishing from weather, not due to lock failure. The only real drawback I see is the fact that it should not be used after an oil base lubricant because the powder may harden. I personally like dry lubricants for locks but if you need to free your lock you can spray wd40 and free it up, just do not use graphite once you use an oily lube for they DON'T mix well. Dry Teflon is another option that works and I will add a link in the description box. Here is a link that will help anyone with questions, this guy does a great job of testing different products and I recommend this video to anyone who want to learn more. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zZaPWGo8TbE.html Thanks! Nice job but why reinforce the strike plate when someone could just break the glass.
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 5 лет назад
That is a good question Syndy, It is harder to break all the glass without getting cut than it is to kick the door in with an inferior strike plate. I kick doors in all the time on the Fire Dept. and one good kick usually does it. With a double bolt lock you would have to break all the glass in order to make entry and you would take the chance of getting cut or bringing attention to the home. Thieves do not want attention. Thanks and have a great day! Paul

If I'm a thief, and I see a locked glass door. I'm scoping out the place, learning the coming and going habits of the inhabitants, and whether or not they have a security system, and when they're gone I'm smashing the glass with a blunt object, reaching through and unlocking the door. If I'm a psycho that doesn't care and is breaking in to do harm, same thing! Your best bet, to be safe, spend the money, install a solid door, and then reinforce it. Sorry, but it doesn't matter what you do to reinforce your door if it's made of glass, if a bad guy wants in, he's in. great video though, good tip installing the longer screws!

This key was a brand new key that worked on the inside just fine. I asked the owner if she ever uses the key to enter from the outside of this door and she said it stopped working a year ago, after using the graphite powder to free the lock up it worked fine. That is a good suggestion though, I have purchased keys in the past that had burrs on them because the person cutting the keys failed to de burr before giving them to me. Thanks! Paul

I think you skimmed over how to position the strike plates just so the door compresses the whetherstripping just write. It's very important to prevent leak. Also, they need to be such that after the latch engages the deadbolt moves freely and not catch the side of its whole. Devil is in the details - they can break you. Imagine one puts screws in a strike plate and now sees he needs move it by 1/8" - what to do? Big problem he has, unless he wants to run away and live a hack for the rest of his life.

Hi Robert, I respect your opinion and I'm sure you are a good locksmith but I also know locksmiths that really like graphite powder and I have had good success with it. I have been remodeling homes for years and I have contractor friends that do things differently than me. We both accomplish the same tasks, we just use different products. I prefer dry lubricants such as dry silicone spray or graphite powder myself. Thanks! Paul
