I use a coffee filter over the drainage holds to keep the dirt from coming through and it also gives your plants a chance to let your plants absorb the water instead of running straight through. Your box looks amazing.great job! 👍🏻❤️

It adds so much charm! Screen wrapped around the pipe would have been a good idea. A cork for the over flow too - on super hot days.

Added a nice touch to the window. I would have put a piece of weed barrier fabric over the PVC and watered from the top. Water like electricity, takes the path of least resistance. You'll find the water runs threw too fast to moisten the soil. Good videos.

Beautiful and thanks I have wanted to do this for years but my husband did not want the water to go on the house. This is the perfect plan

Great looking box. I don’t think you should stop there, your second floor window is perfect too. Go crazy more flowers the better!

Oh it turned out beautiful...instead of rocks that are heavy ....I suggest using crushed up smal( 8oz) plastic soda bottles bottles on the bottom...great as a bottom filler too so you dont need to add so much potting mix ....and it's kinda recycling in the process. I'm looking forward to making a self water box too. Thanks!

This looks so beautiful thank you for the inspiration! Being a home owner for many years and property manager, I have a book where I keep all the paint information for each house and part of the house - it takes the guess work out of finding paint to match your preexisting colours and quickly helps the restoration process!

I have a window box full of English flowers and your heading suggested that you will show how to make it self watering
@SheHoldsDearly
@SheHoldsDearly 3 года назад
Hi Mary! So it's self-watering in that you can water in one spot and it will spread through the box to water all the contents!

Love window boxes! There is a variegated ivy you may want to try next year instead of the vinca which will want to take over eventually. When I plant I try to wait for a cool day and if that’s not happening any time soon I plant in the evening. I water planter box and potted plants earlier in the day and then again after planting. I’ve even been known to use an umbrella over the planting the next day to temper any sun it would get. I like to keep the plants from being shocked if I can.

when you are using dry potting soil, put the amount of soil you think you will need to use in another container (like a bucket or a wheel burrow). Add water and mix until you get your soil to desired wet consistency. then add to your container and it will be ready to pot your plants. The window box is great, I plan to make one for inside my house to sit under a farmhouse window I put a stained glass mosaic onto. with a few modifications, this will be perfect for my plan, thanks!

Just found your channel! Loved this little DIY video, thanks for sharing :) It is interesting to see if you look closely on the wall, that the window used to be full length but it has been covered to match the exterior. Same goes for the window to the left near the little porch! xx

Those little stair windows always used to be stained glass in some sort of configuration. The previous owners must have wanted more light on the stairs, which I totally understand. Being stained glass, though, gave them the character they needed to stand on their own.

Looks lovely! What did you do at the end of the season? Didn't you find cleaning it out to be difficult? I would also think there would be old dirt stuck in there for the next season. I may try to make one using one of those removable plastic window box inserts (drilling the proper hole, of course).

Next time you can use PVC house siding instead of wood. It'll look like painted wood and it'll last forever.

Love your gingham dress! Sounds like you had one of those days. smile! Does it get warm enough where you are at that you are going to have to water this planter everyday? Is there a way to open the window to water from inside the house? I had a window box outside my kitchen window and learned that I didn't have enough sun, for it was on the north side of the house and three pots of silk flowers/bunches were best -- I didn't have to water them! I changed the pots out seasonally. When our house was painted, they removed the window box and I didn't have them put it back up.

Cute window box! Your expanse of wall is just begging for some tall shrubs. Try 'Hicks' Yew (Taxus media 'Hicksii') and Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) to clothe the wall in greenery all year long.

Here's a watering hack to think about: Water the soil first and squeeze out the excess water before adding to the flower box and before adding the plants to ensure the watering is evenly disbursed. Here's another hack tip: Fasten a piece of hard cloth over the drainage to keep the soil from running down the side of your house.

I did t see the oart for the self watering..only saw a plasgic tube thag lookied like it was coing out of the box but then i dont see see it .nor did i see a watering tray like self watering poys
@SheHoldsDearly
@SheHoldsDearly 6 месяцев назад
We meant self watering in that you could pour in the water in one specific spot and it would spread throughout the planter to water all of the individual plants from that one location!

This lacked quite a bit of information that would be pertinent to the construction and the application of the window box. Learned little
