Your recommendation of painting the boards as you go is spot on. It helps in two ways, one you are assured of complete coverage and two you don't have to load your brush so heavy that you end up will places in the gaps that are filled in with paint.

Wow! I love the way you explained everything, from a woman's point of view! I have been to the point of begging for carpenters to install tongue and groove in my farmhouse/cabin style home in the mountains. It's like pulling teeth!! But, I started thinking that I could do something to give that country/mountain look to my kitchen and bath, and you! have helped me decide. Yep, shiplap!! thank you and I have just subscribed!! Thanks!!

I love this!! I've been going back and forth on peel-and-stick shiplap wallpaper because of the expense of the tongue & groove boards, and...am so thrilled to find this tutorial! I can now actually make my dream wall affordably because of you! Thanks, Jenna!

Jenna, you are an inspiration to all novice DIY people. Thank you for being direct, to the point, a little silly (like it), and just yourself. And also thank you for not wearing some outfit that just degrades you and takes away from your diy talent, but instead, dressing the part. Very nice video and well done.

So after watching your vid, I shiplapped the wall over my fireplace today and it came out amazing! The nickel spacing was perfect! I wanted 4” boards and HD wouldn’t cut them that narrow for me, so had to do that myself, but no biggie! Fun project. Thank you so much!

If they would cut it to 8in. like Jenna did, it would have been a lot easier for you to cut them in half than to struggle with a full 4ft by 8ft sheet.

Instead of starting from the bottom. Can you start from the top and work your way down? So that way all your boards are the same size. And when u get to the bottom board you rip it and it won’t be noticeable. Cuz most likely you’ll have a base molding. Sorry if this question sounds dumb.

My fear is mold behind the boards. I didn't see, read or hear if you used a special paint or treatment to prevent mold. I would think with many hot showers and the spaces between the boards, mold will grow. Is there anything special you did that you didn't mention? TY, Jules

great video that includes a couple points not in other videos on topic: specifically painting the top edge as you go and checking level at regular times. Question: what about scenario where you want to the the faux shiplap on textured wall? If you use the "two quarter" separation, I'm concerned you will see "hints" of the texture surfaces between Shiplap boards. what's your suggestion? I could get out the gallon of joint compound and feather the entire surface but that is B-O-R-I-N-G. thanks!

Due to cost difference we decided to use this method over a 3/4 inch overlap board, after installation we felt like we did not get a true ship lap look but were ok with it due to the money saved. After painting it with a latex paint the plywood warped due to the water content of the paint. In the end we were so dissatisfied we ripped it out and went back with a ship lap board. You may want to prime with an oil base primmer before installation to avoid warping.
