Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a combination bench/shoe rack out of fir decking.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Time: 4-5 hours
Cost: $150
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools:
Miter saw [amzn.to/2KneNCF]
Table saw [amzn.to/2KpFzub]
Sanding block [amzn.to/3cBzPJN]
Drill driver [amzn.to/2RZfZQV]
Pocket hole jig [amzn.to/3avZLoL]
Shopping List:
1x4” fir porch decking [www.homedepot....]
2x2” baluster stock [www.homedepot....]
Sandpaper [amzn.to/3cFBv4Q]
Wood glue [amzn.to/3bydBIC]
Pocket screws [amzn.to/34YTAbK]
Spray-on high gloss urethane [amzn.to/2RYEg9A]
Spray-on satin urethane [amzn.to/2VKiyY0]
Steps for building a shoe rack:
1. Start by cutting all the pieces of the fir decking. To ensure each repetitive cut has the same dimension, Tom recommends using the stop on the miter saw. Cut pieces for the rails and slats that will eventually make up the shelving for the shoe rack.
2. Using a table saw, cut dados into the rails and rabbets on both ends of each slat.
3. Sand all the pieces individually before assembling using a sanding block.
4. Insert the slats into the rails. Add filler pieces the thickness of the dado and the same width as the slates into the dado to fill in the holes between the slats.
5. Once the positioning of the slats in the dados are correct, pull each filler piece out individually and apply wood glue to the joint. Repeat this process for the rail on the other side of the shelf.
6. Pull out the slats and sand the filler pieces in the rail smooth.
7. Apply wood glue to the slats and push them into the rails.
8. Clamp everything together and allow the glue to dry.
9. Assemble the shelves using pocket screws.
10. Put the boards together for the top. Place the shelves and the base on top of the shelves to determine the right location for the top. Secure the base to the top using more pocket screws. The top does not require wood glue or any additional connections.
11. Apply a finish to the shoe rack. In the video, Tom and Kevin applied a high gloss urethane.
12. Allow the coat to dry and then apply a second coat. Repeat this process for the third coat. For the second and third coat, apply the satin finish.
Resources:
For lumber, Tom and Kevin used fir porch decking, which can be found at home centers.
To assemble the shoe rack, Tom and Kevin used a combination of wood glue, which is made by Gorilla Glue [amzn.to/3bydBIC] (www.gorillatough.com) and pocket hole screws using a Kreg K4 jig [amzn.to/3avZLoL] (www.kregtool.c....
For the finish, Tom applied a combination of Clear Satin and High Gloss Water-Based Interior Polyurethane Spray Paint [amzn.to/2RYEg9A], which is manufactured by Varathane (www.rustoleum.....
Build It:

Tom makes everything look so easy, the only problem is you need years of experience, the right tools, wood and make the right measurements beforehand. What was his wife thinking when she bought that cheap thing!

I was looking to build a shoe rack-bench when I found this video. So I decided to use this design, however, I didn’t want the pocket hole screws to be visible, so used a combination of wood dowels and pocket hole screws. I used dowels to assemble all the pieces that make up the sides and legs. Then I doweled and glued all the top bench-top boards together to eliminate flexing between boards and need for a center brace underneath. I made the slatted shelves in the same manner as Tom did. After sanding all the various parts, I used pocket hole screws to assemble it all together. It came out great, however there is a slight amount of side to side (shearing) movement that could become problematic over time with heavy use. This is something I realized was lacking in Toms design, so I plan to address it in some manner. A lot of people made comments about not having a table saw/fancy tools to use when woodworking. Videos such as these are intended for those who are into basic modern woodworking and the first and most important tool one must have when woodworking is a table saw. I started out 35 years ago with a small 8” $150 tabletop saw and have made quite a number of projects with it.

Couple of other things to take into consideration after having built this: 1) the width of the shelf rails is listed as 1 and 3/4 inches, while the legs are listed as 2x2's. However, the true width of the 2x2s is probably 1.5 x 1.5, so you may want to rip those shelf rails to match the width of the 2x2's. You also may want to make the length of the slats 0.5 inches longer than the width of the end rails, to account for the width of the 1/4 inch rabbits on each end of the slats. 2) If you assemble as shown in the video, you may have a hard time with attaching the base to the top because the shelf spacing is 6 just inches and might not allow enough room for your drill. It is probably easier to attach the top after you attach the top rails, but before you attach the shelves.

Love the shoe rack, and the video and I am in the middle of building it. It does require a table saw and chop saw, which seems reasonable to have for a do-it-your-selfer. The only thing which they skip which seems critical is how to make the little 1/4" by 1/4" by 1" "blocks" to fill in the dado. Trying to make those on a table saw seems dangerous unless there is some trick I am not aware of. Noticed that the measurements on the top boards are posted wrong (18 inches, but the bench is 33 " wide. But more concerning is that the lenght of some of the slats differs between what is visible on the "cut list" showing on the web site and what you get if you click on "download cut list". And to add to the confusion, the clips of Tommy cutting some of the items in the video does not match either! I am using the "downloaded cut list" as it seems to match up with the final dimensions the best.

wonder what are the people going to do in the trade industry for 😷 N95 Respirator Face Mask like Tommy had on?
@lonewolf3564
@lonewolf3564 3 года назад
If you go onto a website called 1,000 bulbs.com they sell PPE equipment and have n95 respirators/make that are CDC approved and the same masks doctors use. Yes, I know it's weird that a light bulb website company would have PPE equipment but I guess they caught on to the market need, but be paired to pay a high price. They charge $120 for a box of 20 and will only sell them in quantities of at least 20. wow that's not exactly cheap It's still a reasonable price to be well protected. Think about how much more a hospital stay would cost.
