That's a really impressive assortment of words you used together to form a sentence. Are you perhaps implying that a superbly designed hand tool has no business being crafted by power tools? I hear Lie-Nielsen uses wire brushes and investment casting to make their shoulder planes. You know--just to keep it real.
So many people complaining about safety. I wonder how many of those same people smoke? I don't use any safety gear on my tools. Just protective eye wear. As long as you know what you're doing and you take your time, you're good. Experience is good too.
Excellent tool and very well finished and with a very professional finish. If it is a note that sets the trend in a disastrous way, and also is a risk factor for the performer. And it is the fact of not dressing properly to work in something so noble, but at the same time so risky, such as carpentry. And especially those nefarious sandals that, in addition to being cumbersome, subtract manhood and commitment from the carpenter or whatever the trade may be. Greetings from Necaxa Puebla. Mexico.
This is a good design for a bevel up iron. Many I have contemplated building and built have too steep of an iron angle and they don’t work. 20 to 25 degrees seems about right.
Yes, Plans, please. If I had to make one single comment about your videos, PLEASE show more of the project once it is done!!!! I noticed that in this video, and the one about the folding ladder.
Looks really good and functional. Have you considered making the outside of the waste hole flare outwards? This may reduce what appears to be a chocking problem in the video.
i don't even know why someone dislike this video, maybe that person expected a plane in your shoulder or something like that, that plane is beautiful and very functional, like Mr Heisz says, is too beautiful to use, the blade is a chissel or a handplane blade?, sorry for my english.
Your missing the point. It’s the challenge of making it yourself. Believe me it’s quite a skill to fashion a plane with steel iron, temper, anile and hone the steel.
Shop built I would love to build one of these as it would come in handy. I don't currently have a shoulder plane and cannot afford to buy one! I would be afraid to even attempt it without some sort of design plans. Can you offer a sketch with some dimensions and instructions to go along with the video? I would be forever grateful! Thanks in advance, Mike.
Did you ever get the plans together for purchase? I am also very interested in building this shoulder planer. You have great skills in woodworking and videography! Thank you!
No I differently sawed through them even though I measured 10 times and even did test shots To make sure the nails where short enough. Had to nail set them before I hand plane and sanded it
Shop built Nice vid. In fact, I really like all of your vids, and especially the projects! That problem w/ the brads and alignment is an old one that I've seen solved by simply drilling a fore and aft hole in the surfaced early stage sandwich of the 3 pieces. The hole is a registration hole that accepts a wooden dowel pin that is ultimately a glued in place part of the finished project. Also, for the choking/clogging issue, as another mentioned, the "flared" opening is a conical form that would be a snap to make on the bandsaw when the chip hole is initially cut. Did you cover the make of the iron in another vid? If not, that would be a helpful inclusion -- it appears to be an re-purposed chisel, correct? -- Cheers, Bradley
The holes probably would have been a better approach:) I haven't found pluging to be to much of an issue but I do find that plugs a lot the flare would be a great option. The iron I bought, it's a replacement for a veritas shoulder plane. Thanks for watching!!!!
So if you win the lottery, will you turn snob and start using Grey Poupon instead of regular mustard? Wonder what the holding power of Grey Poupon is compared to French's
I hear what your saying, so hard to make a "how to" on youtube because everyone usually taps out of a video after any longer than 10 min… if I ever get my web page up I'll put a lot more detail about the builds there. Thanks for watching!
As well it should. I own a couple of routers, table saw, miter saw, jig saw, circular saw, recip saw, drill press and a bunch of other tools and, so far, the only tool that has removed my skin is my belt / disc sander. Stings but at least I can still count to 10 ;)
I wish you’d explain what he’s doing and why it’s pretty but what he was doing why was doing it when he was doing it it’s just a picture show that’s all it is
I would like to see you use safety glasses in the future and not wear flip flops in a shop situation, It teaches bad habits to the younger generation that might be trying to learn how to build using power tools. You made a very nice shoulder plane and you do fantastic work, but shop safety should be for most.
Shit! I'll just buy one. You put $150.00 worth of time in this build. I think you just wanted to show off myself. Nice job but I don't think I'll live long enough to enjoy using the darn thing if I had to do what you did, damn.
Shop built I'm sorry I said things they way I did. I had no business saying that I thought you were showing off your skills. It's the way I said it that's wrong, you were showing off your skills because your very pleased with yourself and your woodworking abilities. I'm sure you made this beautiful plane, and since I don't have the same skill set or time, I'll just order something on line if it's already available.
