I have long wanted to do something about the air quality in the bed roome so it would be nicer to sleep in there. Then I got an idea to make this heat exchanger HRV.
It replaces the air very efficiently heat exchange is not overly good but it is a cheap DIY project that works.

Half inch aluminum flexible electrical conduit seems like it would work considerably better as far as efficiency and is cheap and widely available. It's ridged and smaller which would create a lot more turbulence with the air.

Hey Russel Jimbangan in sommer IT is great but in the Wintertime the inlet fan is turned off. And when you think about the cost og this fan IT is wird there issent much of these on the market.

For the winter, you could have a second one installed at the bottom of the wall to extract cold air from the room, instead of the warm air at the top of the room. Definitely need vent covers to stop airflow when off.

The industry needs to come up with something like this (smaller) for sheds, garages and CAMPER VANS because right now nothing small exists.

Hey Ric Soares there exists some small ones like this but they work a little different and is a lot more expensive, they have a core and one fan that reverses after a period of time to cool or heat the core. Hope it makes sense. Thanks for watching 🌞

Glad i cut help ☺️ the problem with this setop is the flow is almost to effektiv so if the fan is turned off there is a Lot of Cold air getting in so you Will need som kind of one way valve.

@@diywithadd9955 I might use the same design - just so simple and inexpensive - but make it 4 metres long so that there's a much greater surface area for the heat to exchange. The problem with that might be condensation within it so it might need to be at a slight angle to allow the water to drip to the outside. Also, if the room is airtight, then maybe a fan is only needed on the inlet - creating a positive pressure in the room and the only way for the stale air to leave is through the heat exchanger. Great simple design, brilliant! I imagine by making it longer the efficiency could also be increased... If possible, please measure inlet and outlet temps, efficiency of HRVs is easily calculated by differential Temps... Good Job. Even if your getting 30-40% efficiency, that is an awesome and worthy endeavor. The need is great for DIY super insulated tiny off grid homes, where these type of computer fans are easily run by direct connect to small pv and actively vent during day....

I absolutely love your garage. The roof allows for natural light. I think I will try to do the same when I get the chance. Perhaps put some UV protection film on it. Thank for the videos.

I like your design. Actually I am planning to make my vacuum cleaner exhaust blow out instead of circulating in the room. A different way of air flow. Your presentation is very helpful

What kind of vacuum are you using? Older Tristar vacuums can do this. I think Filter Queens also. You just need the exhaust to be able to have a hose attached to it. Takes all the dusty air outside and then you have no more filters to buy. Probably is easier on the motor as it doesn't have to push the exhausted air through that filter. All vacuums should have this ability. Sadly nobody seems to care that they're breathing in more dust during and after vacuuming than before. Unless they wear a respirator that fits properly of course.

You should really try to make one from thin metal sheets, like industrial aluminium foil (the thicknes of single-use disposable aluminium-foil baking trays or disposable grills), or other metal sheets, or even plastic sheets of paper (ideally paper coated with a wood varnish). So you would make multiple sheets, each even space intake and odd space exhaust, using silicone on the sides to keep the two air sources separated, then have the whole thing longer to recycle more heat, thermally insulate the whole thing for the same purpose, and maybe only use an intake fan with a paper towel or toilet paper as an air filter to prevent outside dust from getting in as easily. The result migth be larger, but you will also not lose as much temperature to the outside, and you might even get less dust thanks to the paper towel air filter / toilet paper air filter. And you can use toolless screws for changing the filter, and optionally also a hinge.

I made such thing from alum tubes 12mm diameter. 1m length, 72 tubes, 3d printed detail. Worked for 3 years, when -40 at street, input was about +12

Thank you for this. As a visual person I appreciate a vid wothout talking. Question on function - do you have something more on how it is wired up? You need a 12v transformer? What kind of temp range does this work over? I'm in Australia, so minus one or 2 degrees C up to 40 or so is usual.

Any small 12v power supply will work on these pc fans. In terms of efficiency I haven't made any technical test on this. I have a lot of projects 😌 thanks for watching

Add-ons: a solar air-heat box of choice, added to exterior intake; warms & can filter incoming air. ALTERNATE SIZING: use wider diameter culvert pipe, to fit in many more of the small exchange tubes, twisted, & longer. Can then use common box fans to move the air. The fittings would maybe be trickier, but T-connectors are available. This would work well for larger rooms. This design shown, tho, makes it so easy to make air-exchangers for single rooms! Could use one on sunny wall for winter use, by putting the intake pipe into a solar-air-heat box… & a 2nd one, longer, on shaded wall for summer to help cool, by right-angling the intake pipe outside, elongated down towards the ground, pulling air from a shade-cooled filter box near ground.

Hey Stanislav Dimitrov. I haven't had any problems with mold or condensation but it is probably because it's a very low powered application if the fans pushed more air there would be condensation i think, if I should make something different with this project I would make it bigger and put the fans further away from each other. I had the idea to build something similar but using square ventilation tubing and Correx for the core, otherwise exactly the same principle. Maybe one day I will get to post a video about it.

Hey Minu Alunel I would love to see that video if you made one ! I've also had the idea with Correx but like the idea of aluminum better. I would really like to change the core with some much smaller aluminum hoses but I have not been able to find anyone who sells them yet.

@@diywithadd9955 I really don't see the advantage with aluminium, you don't actually want a very good heat conductor that can transfer heat when the system is off.

@@minualunel9629 Aluminum is one of the best materials to absorb heat and cold that is why I use it but the setup could clearly be better, my system also runs 24 hours a day, it is not a passive system but the idea of one is interesting.

I would like to know the working principal of the mechanism. At one end I could see that it's throwing out stale air inside. The positioning of fans in terms of air flow direction will be able to help me understand it better. 😊

stale air is blown out through the 3 metal tubes. fresh air is pulled in through the space around the tubes. Heat exchange occurs on the surface of the metal tubes. This design could be substantially improved by using much smaller tubes. Perhaps drinking straws?

@@sabelch You are absolutely right it would be far more efficient with more pipes I just could not find any that were cheap. Straws would be an option but they are not long enough. I would like to use aluminum because it dissipates heat really well.

Wouldn't lots of smaller tubes be better so moisture doesn't cling to the large surfaces? Also, where is the filter because won't we be sucking all the pollen and other stuff in from outside?

This is definitely a really cool idea. I would like to leave a tip: Use CPU coolers, brands like Cooler Master or Corsair, I say this because they are less susceptible to failures caused by dust and last longer

@@shanelipe2552Well Denmark is a very nice country, especially if you are young and not sick in any way, then there are really many good options. Otherwise I would say it's a bit boring we have tons of rules sky high taxes on everything and a bunch of politicians who have no idea what they're doing. However, we do not have to pay to go to the doctor and most people get support if they lose their job but everything is just so fucking expensive (I do not have much money) 😅 I unfortunately got my diagnosis ADD late in life so my youth has been hell. But you do not get my whole life story in this comment track 😉 maybe when I hit 100,000 subscribers 😂 which I hope will happen one day. I am a trained auto mechanic but have not worked like that for many years. I have been on off the job market for the past 15 years due to mental and physical illness. My most recent job was as a teaching assistant for special children. What are you doing on a daily basis ?

@@shanelipe2552 I work 9 auers a week right now in a shop where i do a lot of simple tasks and help where i can we produce sundbarriers for large machines and i love it. I have a wife and daughter 2 years old. If the incoming air is too cold add a solar heat box to draw air through and control the fans via Sonoff TH-16 with temp probe. The box can be any size and contain aluminum down spouts or soda cans painted flat black. Draw incoming air though it. Add a small solar panel to only allow this to run when the sun shines and it can also charge the batteries these fans run off of when the Sonoff shuts off the fans. If the air gets too hot, add a duct damper controlled by a separate Sonoff TH-16 to draw in normal outside air. If you need this to run at night, add a water fed coil in the system fed by your water heater to warm the outside night air. It will also let you tap into the unused heat from your solar box outside to heat water when you don't need to use it to heat your living space. Note: you will need a separate water heater to use and pass heat to your main water heated either direction they require. You may wish to keep these water heaters separated and just use the 2nd as a heat bank for use at night to heat the incoming air via the banked heat in your water heater. Dampers and fans can be controlled within 1 degree on/off - open/closed via Sonoff TH-16, right from the eWeLink app. Alexa can also tell you the temperature of any of these Sonoff probes when you ask it. More work but you get fresh air and at the temperature you desire while exhausting humid air containing all of the CO2 and possibly carbon monoxide and any other harmful toxins. I hang passive solar panels inside my south facing windows and save 25% energy to heat my home on sunny winter days. These panels can be simple cardboard covered with aluminum foil & foil tape painted flat black. Leave space for air to pass by. The back of the cardboard will not get above 90f and the foil can get to 130f. You can also add a solar powered fan to disperse the heat. The fan will be just like these you use and the tube will have several holes blowing up the panel to move air past this 130f foil. Yes, this is safe as cardboard needs to be approx. 400f to combust.

how much does it actually change the incoming air from outside? What is temp outside and what is it when it's entering the house? I have a feeling there isn't much of any benefit in this build to the actual ERV function. Assuming it is a nice balanced push pull fan combo though. Nicely done

With the budget in mind, this project has never been intended to have a good efficiency when it comes to heat recovery but it should be effective at replacing the air for which it is good. And if there is just a slight recycling of the heat then it is a win. And in my opinion, it is not at all possible to make a small (effective HRV) on a small bugget thanks for watching

Calculations are done by fan volume measured in CFM Cubic Feet Minute. Room HxLxW in feet equals cubic feet or volume of room. Then divide volume by the fan cfm and that's how many minutes it will take to completely exchange the room air. But fans also need equal intake to the room.

@@mrmotofy One needs to take into account the 'static pressure' of the system. "Ductulators" (charts that give you this information). No fan is 100% effective and the flow decreases with static pressure. In fluid pumping examples such as hydronics, the static pressure would be analogous to "Feet of head".

With the in and out so close together will this cause local recirculation. for example the 'in fan' air gets quickly sucked out again by the 'out fan' - just wondering??

You are absolutely right, I came to this conclusion myself shortly after installing it. The packaging from one fan (the cardboard box) acts as an extension and it seems to work, it is about 20cm. Thanks for watching

Nice! Trying to understand how yours works… It pulls out room air via the 3 tubes, while it pulls fresh outside air into the small holes in big pipe to warm it over the tubes before it comes into the house? 🤔

Few pointers you would get little less heat loss if the unit would be closer to floor where colder air is located. Of course then you feel the cold easier so it has also minus effect. You should press few dents to those aluminum pipes to create little bit more turbulence inside the tubes. That would boost the performance even more. You can add those afterwards. Just drill 10mm holes to that plastic pipe and push them inwards with pen etc dull object. Or add baffle plate on the 3 inled holes so air starts to be turbulent rigth from the start. that can be calculated based on air speed vs hole size. For 140mm arctic fan 49 pcs 18mm holes should be enough. I will soon know as next CFD simulations should come ready soon. Anyway great construction and thanks for sharing.

You have some interesting suggestions, something that would definitely make this project something with a measurable efficiency. But the heat exchange efficiency is not the only thing I have to take into account, as it works now there is a decent air flow despite the very small fan, and it would get worse with more resistance, at the same time it will also make more noise and it may not make more noise (says the wife) 😅

I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between this and just opening the window. Does the minor amount of heat exchange the other fan makes noticeable enough to be worth the build? Looking to do something for a Skoolie i'm converting. Thanks.

Hey DDGPro It is better than opening a window because this type of HRV changes the air all the time a little at a time and you will be able to control the amount with speed controls and fan size. Cool projekt converting a Skoolie! Maibe look at polycarbonate cellar sheets before you start building your HRV

@@DDGPro The sheets is for the heat recovery IT is a chep way to make the core like they are in the expencive ones you can buy. Its more Work but more effektive. My HRV would be more effektive with smaller tubes and more of Them but hard to find.

Hello SO20 I started by using a charger for a mobile phone with usb but it only generates about 5volts and this is not quite enough to push the air through the mechanism so ended up buying a small 12volts power supply. Thanks for whatching 🌞

One draws air out in this case moist used air from the bedroom and the other draws in fresh air. But yes if it is very cold inside and very hot outside then the air that comes in will be cooled a bit. Thanks for whatching

I have specifically written that (It replaces the air very efficiently heat exchange is not overly good) I do not know how much it cools the room down you can compare with a window that is slightly open all the time, also I have chosen to use very low performance fans and only added 5 volts via usb to them to get the noise down to non-existent

The way I have made this is that it has better flow out than in, so there will be more air out than in, but you can also choose to have a fan with a higher cfm on the extraction side. Thanks for watching

Hey kumar nand About 10 square meters but it runs on 5volt USB phone charger the good thing about this project is that you can put just the fan you want on it and add the power you want to it, it all depends on whether you can sleep when it runs because of the noise. Thanks for watching
