DIY sinker mold

I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a ru-vid.comUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

A drill press sure makes life better. I like this idea and gonna have to try making one like it.

I run a double weight mold and just spray it with PAM for the first couple of pours. For the weight on my crab snares, I use the bottom of the big beer cans. For the first couple of pours, I use never seize. Just because I have several cans of it on hand. Once the molds are warmed up they don't require any releasing agents.

Could weigh your lead before melting so that ya get the exact sinker weight you’re looking for. Then just pour into diameter pipe you want your sinkers to be. Just a thought 👍🏻. Great video!! Keep em comin!

When you got a lead mold has a pull pen make sure you put some oil on it that way it makes it easier to pull it out of the mold and the lead

If you heat the mold before you poor the lead it helps the lead form to the mold better and you get nicer smoother pours

That's an awesome DIY mold I use old wheel weights for mine

A thin coating of oil on your pin and mold allows it to release alot easier.

Put some vegetable oil on a paper towel and wipe down the pin every few sinkers, it will make the removal of it much easier.

I make sinkers taking a 20oz bottle top use a paperclip then wire in the bottle top then pour lid on to the wire to make a free fish sinker about 1 1/2 for bank fishing

Another way to make them is to use a piece of pipe, cut one end at 45, fill with lead, drill hole in the high point of the 45 for the line. I use a larger one with a snap on it to slide down the line to free up a snag, works every time. Pipe is whatever you have, stainless, aluminum or copper. Drill hole in a piece of wood to hold the pipe and stop the lead from going out the bottom when you pour.

Clamp a piece of wood on the drill press table to allow the piece being drilled to hold the part being drilled... Used candle smoke on the mold to get the lead to release better. Heat the mold to make the first part look better...

I make sinkers with an in expensive muffin pan just a few bucks works great

Have not seen this trick but here goes. You may want to try it. Needed: Old drill bit, could be dull Drill, preferable a slower one or variiable speed Block of wood or wood dowle Piece of tape Some gorrila glue This time of year many are changing line on reels, or reversing line. Start drill bit into wood. Glue spot drill goes into wood. Tie or tape line onto wood. Put reel into free spool and start drill. If reversing line have another drill bit and wood set up then put line on other wood. Then wind that line onto reel. Look forward to see it

Yea I have the tall pot with the lever I like but it does have prob. I had to add to the legs to raise up once so the mold for under it. And the pin you pull if it clogs don't run right or pull the pin and don't want to stop. So wish ide had the hand pot. But I was making and selling so needed to make more at a time but 15 pounds ain't a big pot wish ide got the 25 pound pot. But wish I had the money ide pay you to make me few of them to make me some no roll. But I might be able to make one I'll try. That about wood maybe but yea will burn up over time. But I'll figure something. I got to get me some lead getting low had 50 pounds stolen from me people like stealing. Lol. Just realized I can use this process a little modified to make 8oz+ mickey mouse style double loop disk sinkers for deep sea fishing. Instead of paying over 80$ for a mold that tops out at 8oz's. Thx

you asked for viewer DIY I have made pyramid sinkers using 1 of the weight I want to use. firm up some sand and make an impression of the weight. then hang either Barrel swivels or just bend wire and hang into the mold. They don,t have to be pretty. If you fish in rocky or snaggy water. used nuts on light line work good too.

if you smoke the mold with a candle, it'll drop even more smoothly.

If the lead gets hard coming out of that mold you could always put a candle under the mold to where it turns the inside black and it will help release easier. Can also use pieces of tea light candle to clean up the lead before pouring but just be careful if to hot the wax will combust. Don't ask me how I know that

if you know of a junk yard that will let you walk around. you might can get the tire weights from cars and trucks that are junked...

My uncle used to make his sinkers by heating his pot up in the furnace. He had an old spoon that he would put a dab of vasoline on and clamp in a vice. He would hold a nail with a pair of pliers where he wanted the hole and then pour the melted lead into the spoon. Taught me how to do it. Made many sinkers in his basement using this method. Can't believe he let me around molten lead when I was just a youngster but things were different back then (1950's). Loved your video. Love your DIY presentations. Just thought I'd share.

Great DIY as always. If youre worried about impurities in the lead put a small piece of paraffin wax or a small candle in it while its melting, the impurities/trash stick to it and rise to the top. I use paraffin when melting lead to pour bullets for reloading. Thanks again.

Good job!! Something we do is set the mold on top of the pot, it brings the temp up and the end product will look better, at least for the first couple of pours.

I am building one tonite!.sinkers r expensive........but I did buy a sinker mold of a style that I use the most. remember that it .....oh forget it ......its a lead thing I like the advise from your viewer....smoke the mold w/a candle to make the release easier.....that again will be done tonite

Another DIY sinker that i make is using old small cartridges that are chucked away in car parks here in the uk. Cut the top off, insert twisted wire loop, then fill with lead. Check out cartridge weights on my channel if you want.

I have to admit although lead is nasty stuff I love using it and I have a few types of molds. This is an absolutely great idea Keith and you can use box iron or whatever to get different shapes, if you smoke the inside of the mold with a candle it helps get the weight out too

My Dad would place his mold on top of his lead pot while it was heating. A warm mold helps prevent the first pour from looking bad.

Thats a good looking mold but if you heat your mold up before you pour they will come out better than your first one did

I use same set up but use wood boards instead. 1 different size holes and other parts holes coat hanger for pull pins. I make .25 .05 3/4 and 1 oz weights. Try using a old wax candle, rub inside of mold before pour come right out no issues. As well add some was to your lead while melting, it will help the trash gather up together easier. Be careful was will catch a flame for a min.

If you place the mold on top of the melting pot you'll preheat it producing a nicer finish.

Take a propane pencil torch and heat the inside of your aluminum die first, before pouring...and you won't have 'ugly casts'...you have to pre-heat your bullet dies when pouring bullets, or you get massive air pockets in your cold dies...the hot die will also release better, and cause less wear on your dies.

fan or outside don't let water near the melted lead. sometimes tire shops will give away tire weighs.

im looking up this stuff to think of a way to make thru line sinkers my design idea is a cone shape because im concerned with snags and i only need 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz i was thinking ill just take the time to hand make a plaster mold but im open to suggestions

Just a thought 🤔. You could place the piece of aluminum pipe in a vice. Then tighten slightly. Then you have a oval shaped sinker. Subject how much you tighten the pipe, the longer the oval sinker weight.

If you are just going to cut aluminum you can just use a normal chop saw with a wood blade. We do it at work a lot

The pins are brass, not copper. Copper is too soft for pull pins.

just a FYI, My entire wood shop came from Harbor Freight as well as my welders, and my metal machine shop. if you use the tools as described and what they are intended for, and don't abuse them they last a very long time

Nice vid. When I was a boy I used to drag big tackle balls off the jetties and pier pilings then take them home and cut and untangle it all for my fishing gear. I would take all the small sinkers and put them in a tin can over our fire pit till they melted and pour it into pvc caps that had copper wire cross layed in it. Once it cooled I would pry the pvc off and those where my surf weights. Lol

Just made some flat round sinkers after watching this. Just drilled into wood made eyelets out of 14 copper wire, Look good gonna try them next week see how they hold bottom.

PRE HEAT YOUR MOLD....the 1st came out a shite because the mold was cold.

If you can make this mold I bet you could make a jig head mold that would be similar to the Savage Gear 3D Crab Stand Up Jig Head which they charge around 6 bucks a piece for online. Hope you give this idea some consideration. I use artificial crab lures often for sheephead fishing and this would be something I would really use. I have tried to make a mold for it but I am not very good at such things. Just thought I would ask. Thanks
