Well done, but crimp for the earth wire join might be safer than solder. The solder joint could fail with the heat and your first indication might be an electric shock.
@MatsK007
@MatsK007 Год назад
Extend the earth wire, NOOOOOOOO! Strip the power cord a bit and get a longer earth wire!
@thiloreichelt4199
@thiloreichelt4199 Год назад
@@MatsK007 I do not see a problem in extending the wire itself. The connection should be crimped (safer), the wire should be green-yellow and he should make sure the PE is the longest wire to make it tear off last.

It's a much bigger problem that he solders the wires he screws into the terminal block. That'll give loose connections very soon

@@thiloreichelt4199 The color is easily identifiable at the base of the extension and a shrink tube sealed proper solder connection is rock solid [gas tight with molecular bonding] and will never fail unlike a crimp could. Shrink tube is high temp and won't melt.

10:47 it's funny you can see all the old flux boiling. Drives me crazy that it never gets cleaned off of hand-soldered parts. A coworker gave me a nice 2.1 Logitech PC speaker system for free because it was making noise when adjusting the volume and one of the speakers kept cutting out. I took the wired controller apart and cleaned the potentiometer for the volume, and that got rid of the scratching, but the speaker still cut out. After tearing the sub enclosure apart, and looking at the control board that split the signal to all the different speakers, I saw the issue. Little wired pigtails to the board to the ports on the sub box were hand-soldered and the flux had remained gooey and collected tons of dust. I simply cleaned those spots with alcohol and a toothbrush to get rid of the flux-dust-sludge, and then tested it. No more speaker cut out. I've been using those speakers for longer (4yrs) than the guy who gave them to me did (about 2yrs) Moral: clean your flux. It doesn't matter if the flux is non-conductive, the dust that impregnates it potentially is conductive.

Cool, I once had the same coffee machine, but it was from 1975, so there may be not so many anymore around. After the glass pot was broken mine went into a heated magnetic stirrer, not a hot plate. I never expected that the plastic encasement could withstand temperatures above 120 °C. Please consider the emission index when pointing to metallic surfaces with an IR thermometer.

Older stuff prior to the 1980s was made better. But Planned Obsolescence been put in place since before the 1940s. A TV My Father bought a couple years before I was born 1965 lasted all they way to the very early 1990s before it finally gave up the Ghost when My Father couldn't get anymore replacement Vacuum Tubes to match TV. Now TVs/other Appliances/Electronics are lasting less than 3-12 years with only light use.

Semiconductor components do not withstand such long periods of heating. If you want to use the elements as salvaged parts later, it is best to sweep the elements together with a spatula-like tool from the card surface after the card is completely warmed up. If you try to pick up individual items with tweezers, most items will be exposed to extreme heat and die before you pick them up.
@jamesbrown99991
@jamesbrown99991 Год назад
An alternative to the spatula is to just whack the side of the PCB on a hard surface and let all the parts go flying

I've baked "dead" GPUs to reflow and bring them back to life at similar or higher temperatures. With all the different parts on a GPU, I had a pretty high success rate reflowing old GPUs and bringing them back to life. If you look at commercial automated or manual reflow stations, they operate at around 250c or higher. I would think they would be most concerned out of anyone when it comes to damaging components, as they make new/warrantied products.

Good video and good build. -Please know that it is *forbidden* in EU to use solder on a wire before putting it in a screw-terminal. The correct way is to remove 10mm of the insulation, twist the wire, bend the tip 5mm backwards so you have a total of 5mm exposed wire, then make sure the tip of the wire is at the top (so the screw touches the tip) when tightening the screw. Using solder on the wire-ends that go in screw-terminals may seem like a good idea at first, but it has caused many fires in my country and this is now forbidden by law and regulations.

Would give some folks a piece of mind to test those de-soldered elements to show they still work given power. A small blower, like flux fan might help divert noxious fumes the PCB might give off. However, you appear to be in a large work area, like a garage so it's probably not so much an issue.

We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

Well given the melting point of your average 60/40 solder is at 375°F and your average coffee maker heating element warming plates only reach a max of 200°F, only reaching above the 212°F within the percolating tube mounted directly on the heating element. Im not sure this would work.. it would preheat the boards to 200°F then a hot air rework gun could have an easier time retrieving or fixing components, but not the heating element alone…. All the thermostat does is turn the element on or off based on the pressure inside the bulb preset by manufacturer, so it does not boost any power for the unit.. unless you overvolt the element, which would work seeing as those elements wont go full nuclear until double the normal voltage is pushed through them.. the fugger would get hot nuff then for sure..
