Some feedback from me, who has actually made this: - First of all, Jess, thank you so much. This was my first maxi dress and first time smocking/shirring and I’m so pleased with the result! I am about 184 cm tall and made it floor length, but 3M of fabric was still enough. I used a lightweight cotton instead of linen bc linen was too expensive, and it still turned out great. The shirring part was indeed not that hard but defo time consuming. It took me two rolls of elastic thread so make sure you have enough. I thought drawing the lines first was too much work haha, so I just used my presser foot to see more or less how much space I should leave between each line and the line before it. Worked totally fine, and the shirring is very forgiving, you won’t see little mistakes. For the straps: really see where you want them when you try the dress on, I put my back straps way to far to the side bc I didn’t. Pattern overall worked great and the shoulder straps (which I thought were quite long) worked perfect. Make sure to cut all your pattern pieces on the fold like Jenn does. Good luck and thanks again!
I plan to do it in the next weeks, i read this and I thank you. I tried shirring before but i think I got the wrong type of elastic and the dimension reduced more than 2 times, i was unlucky even if I did test before.
I'm about to try make this dress. I'm 5'10 and roughly size 14 top 12 bottom but long bodied. How long would you make the top part? Also do you still think 3 metres is enough for me please? I love the shirred floaty look. Thank you 😊
All of your projects are amazing! Thank you! I am so inspired, and I'm gonna try several of your projects. I can't thank you enough for these informative and clear videos!!
I can not wait to start this project. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate that you explain how to make the pattern in every video I've seen so far.
That's kind of my plan. I've a double sided patchwork quilt cover one side is plain. Will cut into panels. Although it's just cotton not linen. Linen is expensive in the UK. I hope mine turns out. How dis yours work?
Stunning dress! I've just gotten into sewing, will make this for summer - thank you for the inspiration, and the video is of really great production quality!
This tutorial is amazing! I made this dress and it turned out so great, I'm really happy!! Thank you for explaining all the steps so well and for giving us this wonderful inspiration! This is the first real dress i ever made and i couldn't be happier with the result :)
Thank you for this video! 💖 I’ve made this dress yesterday, and I’m so happy with the result! I decided to make it with a stiffer cotton fabric, because I wanted a dress with a bit more ‘drama’. It was a bit difficult using the cotton, but it worked out in the end! Thank you again for these clear directions ☺️
Wow!!! Lovely dress 👗! Will try and sew one too! By the way i made the face masks with your guidance on your face mask vlog and it came out beautiful! Many thanks ♥.
It looks very good ! I was following your last tutorial (i sew the top hem) but this one looks very good so i may try to make a mix of those two amazing tutorials( or make two dresses!) P-S: thank you very much for your videos, that's the third of your tutorials that i follow(i already did the overall dress and the puffed-sleeves one), i just started sewing and your videos inspire me so much! Thanks to you i'll have a wonderful me-made wardrobe this summer 💖☀️
Question. After shirring my bobbin casing would not tighten for regular thread to finish top. Did I stretch it out with elastic thread and need to get another one ?
This is beautiful ! But please help me I have a question : I did the shirring but it barely shir. I have tried to change de lenght, the tension of the thread etc... but it doesn't shir a lot so it is way too big for me even though I have made the measurements by following exactly what you say... I don't know what to do. (I hope you understood I am not english and I don't know all the "technical" words)
I think you didn't put the elastic thread right to the position. Check again on my video where I show the way I did it. I got the same problem like you when I first started shirring
It'll be nicer if you ad more cm to the rectangles. But you can also add another rectangles to connect in case the width of your fabric is not long enough
Lovely tutorial! I will try to recreate it, but i have a question. What if my hips are a lot wider than my top? so the first tier must be way wider than the top part, i can't make it the same width or it wont fit me. Thank you
