Here in Canada we leave a toe hole so that the shoe can tilt as you walk; this way the snow doesn't build up on the front like a shovel. We also leave some gaps in the webbing for the snow to fall through. Nice job. By the way, the word you were looking for about the reason for burning or melting the ends of the webbing is "fraying".
Great video and craftsmanship. It seems like just as much money goes into the materials as just buying a set of snowshoes which have good stable bindings and comfortable design with crampons.

Nice snow shoes. I am thinking of making a pair for myself and looking for ideas. I have a pair but I dont like the bindings so I will make rubber bindings for those and build a pair for my son.
Fumingzeus Yep, that was the hard part to create. In the end I decided not to go for the whole there for the pivoting as it would complicate things with keeping it simple with just rope.
Cristinamontece Cristinamontece don't need all of that. making the snowshoes with nothing more than a heat gun is no issue for me. trusting PVC to hold up under cold and stress for a long time is an issue. if I can determan PVC will be sutible, making the snowshoe will be a simple task.
Alvin Dueck well, all i can say is that so fat i did not encounter that issue. But then again, i use it more on snow then ice. The snow is easily removed with a few taps. Only negative thing is that it does not pivot, and collects snow on top.
J M 5 years prove you wrong my friend. I was carefull not to walk on rocks which could damage the paint. Still going strong :-) But i bought not so long ago also commercial snowshoes, as it is better for multiple day hikes.
Glad it is working for you man, its not an option much here because the paint would freeze right off and rocks would destroy it. Montana is very much known to have so man rocks unfortunately.
