Here is a super simple and quick project that you can do to get a good start on your spring and summer gardens. This will make seed pots (soil blocks) for starting your plants from seed. An advantage to this type of seed starter is that the open pot/block allows your seeds roots to 'airprune'... meaning they'll stop when they hit air versus rounding the inside of a traditional pot or mesh casing. Just a little PVC, scrap wood, a few screws and a wooden dowel are all you need to make this project.
Thanks for watching!

You can probably leave a 1/4-1/2" section of the dowel sticking out of the bottom disk to use as the spot to put your seeds. Very clever!

Great idea! FYI - if you sharpen you dowel with a pencil sharpener and cut the point off then allow that to extend beyond the plunger about 1/4", it would also prefab the seed hole into your soil block.

Robert Deyo Thanks Robert! I actually corrected that in my latest seed/soil block making video! It should be in the most recent 15 videos or so. I've got a bolt protruding through and I use a bit larger pvc to get a larger block:) Joe

Love it! Easiest solution I've seen so far and (no surprise to me) you're obviously more a handyman than a gardener! Right? Anyway, thanks for taking the time and effort to post.

Captain Ron hahaha:) You're probably right. Although I do love gardening, it's far from an expertise.... but I'm still growing that knowledge! Hopefully planning on doing my biggest garden yet this spring:) Thanks for watching! Joe

Way Cool... I'll be making one tomorrow! One suggestion... On the doll rod, on the plunger end... Make a tapered point on it to form a seed starting hole...

Great suggestion Philip! After I made it i added a little bolt head at the end to do just what you're talking about. I wish I had done it for the video but I guess it just didnt cross my mind then;) Anyways, Thanks for watching!

This is great! I would, however, use the plywood (as in the video) for the plunger part since solid wood might split after being used a lot. I've been using toilet paper tubes but this is better (if I actually make them!). This lets us decide the diameter and depth ourselves and will let us have different size starter "pots." I also love we can custom-mix our soil. Thank you!!!

Great plunger "gizmo"! I came across it while looking for something like it. Then I realized, why not cut many 1 &1/2" PVC pipe in approx 1 1/2"-2 " length pieces, cut ends squarely. Sand the inner upper /lower edges with emery paper /file to smooth out any burrs or remove cuttings. Rest it on a firm flat surface that could take wetting (piece of glass/ pvc, plastic board,table top). Fill with potting mix and compact soil with your " updated gismo". It will work to compact it and make seed hole. Or with pencil or any sharp dowel/stick make a shallow 1/2" hole in the compacted soil in the pipe and plant the seed. When wet, you can easily lift up the PVC pipe with sprouted seed and push out the young plant into what ever transplant medium; bed or bigger pot. They are reusable. Your idea is a Great idea, keep thinking to improve the world

Might want to put a nail or screw on end to poke a hole in soil pod for seed? Great video, thanks! Subscribed:)

My little suggestion is to have the 1/2" dowel poke out a bit at the base to create a divet for dropping your seed in. Better and larger than just a screw head, which most people use.

thanks... hope it works out well for you. You'll (myself too) have to post a couple pics when the seeds start growing;)

Been looking for something like this, awesome idea! Perfect for seedling starts IMO. Have you thought about making a bigger soil blocker to transplant those blocks you just made? Seriously great idea, the for the vid!

Thanks Gordon, I'm going to have to consider something like that, I like the idea already! Thanks for watching and commenting:) Joe

Nice job but would be even better with a wider diameter piece on top (to act as a finger guard), and piece of timber to grip hold of screwed onto that. That way you can work fast and no crushed fingers! A coating on linseed oil applied inside the tube each time would enable the soil to come out easier.

Very nice, I with agree Patrick you need a screw on the bottom one for an indent to put the seed in. Than you I like this one

Cherokee Rose Thanks CR! I actually have a new version with a video that I just posted a couple weeks ago with the indent feature:) Check it out if you like and thanks for watching! Joe

You can also put a small nail in the middle of the lower plywood piece, to make a little hole on the top of the soil block for easy planting of seeds.

If you make the dowel a little longer down the end you have a little hole in the middle to put your seed in. You could even make a point at the end of the dowel.
@homesteadonomics

Good idea Jeroenw4c! Will keep that in mind if I do another one:) Thanks for watching. Joe

You can also screw on a small bolt to the block head and create the divot in the soil
@homesteadonomics

Thanks Hanz, thats a good idea:) I'm thinking of making another one with some mods to it including that one. Thanks for watching!

The video turned out nice. I like the transitions in the very beginning. Have you thought about making the dowel longer/slimmer to allow it to make a seed hole part way into the soil block at the same time?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 10 лет назад
Thats a good idea, now I'm going to have to make a mod to it....maybe an adjustable screw or something along those lines...stay tuned;)

Good job but if you would have made a pin at the end of the bottom part the block will come out with the hole for the seeds you know what I mean also it can be made square too above all good video thanks
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 9 лет назад
Ujoey54 Yep, that would've been much nicer.. but I think I might make another one but I'll definitely add something to make the hole for seeds. Thanks for watching Joey:)

Hi Gina... I have a slightly more updated video on this style block maker where I added a nut that makes a depression in the block for the seed. Just scroll back in my videos and look for 'timelapse seed starting' Joe
