I watched your build of this box and as well followed you explanations here step by step. In my opinion, you did not need to explain yourself to those who refuse to see the lines. The ingenuity that you put in the building of this power box is more than wonderful. Good work. Do more and do not allow the negative comments pull you aside.

I needed a unit ru-vid.comUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y that I could store in my home when I wasn't running, so it being light and running on propane were key requirements. I can store the propane tank/bottle outside yet store the generator in my home when it's not in use as I will never put any gas in the engine. It is so light, and on echo mode, which I expect is how it will be used most of the time, it is pretty darned quiet (certainly compared to all the generators I hear in my neighborhood after each power outage).Many of the previous reviews had me concerned that it would be difficult to start on propane, but I have to say, I had absolutely no problem at all. I primed it first using the choke...3 pulls, heard the engine want to start, flipped it to propane, and one more pull and she started. I ran it for 2 hours the first time and plugged it in my fridge. And when I was done, I put the propane tank away and carried the generator to my basement for next time.I could not be happier.

That is a pretty cool project. I like the use of the hard-case. I need something similar for power tools around my smallholding. I have two suggestions though: 1 - Relays contacts can weld closed. I have witnessed this in a range of products. I would add a cheap automotive style fuse holder as they can deal with vibrations and are readily available. 2 - Maybe add a spring-loaded or latched cover for the exposed components mounted on the lid for protection during transport. I mounted an HMI in a hard case using a internal plate. This means that the internal components are completely sealed and protected when the lid is closed. A laser cut stainless steel face plate is surprisingly cheap.

@Nauctshea 5 лет назад
Seconded. Relays aren't designed for fault protection. A fuse will protect the system regardless of what the control software is doing or what the condition of the relay is.

Jehu. I know this is an old thread but just saw it on my Roku RU-vid channel. I've always been amazed and impressed by your skills and creative abilities in this arena. This build was no exception and thank you for answering the naysayers. While for someone (like me) the thought of spending $1,300 on a portable unit is way out of reach, the prospect of duplicating your build is something to strive for. Perhaps since that build technology and prices have improved so much that an off the shelf unit makes more sense but where's the fun in that 😁. Anyway kudos and thanks for being an inspiration at least to one 70+ yo Texan on a 105 degree day. Saludos

Just finished building my base station system, but am currently designing portable system similar to this. Likely 200ah (2400wh) batteries, 2000w/4000w inverter, DC distribution using Anderson Power Poles, fans etc etc. Love my battery backup systems with solar power inputs and controller.

I built a solar generator on wheels for 7200 watt hour power, 3000/6000 watt inverter, on board 75 amp LiFeP0 charger for wall power or generator input, 30 amp MPPT solar charger, 250 amp BMS and 8x280 amp hour cells. Its a total blast building this stuff myself. Here's a short video of it charging my other 2100 amp hour AGM bank a few days ago. The stuff on top of it is for a fresh air welding mask project using NATO gas mask filters. Its also a handy work bench and power tool outlet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NYpczRYDFJQ.html

this is awesome, cant wait for the schematic. Ill probably try to build something like this, wont look as good as yours though. forget the haters, in the 3d printing community some outside people dont get why we 3d print stuff when we can save time (design and print time) just buying a product off the shelf. My family was like that until i started making custom stuff, now they want me to make stuff for them with their ideas. They hate what they dont understand and cant bother to learn something new. Or they say they dont have time, but then watch tv, yt... all the time when they are free. Usually I start up a youtube vid and do something else while its playing.

For the expansion battery pack, could you include a grid tie inverter as well as a micro grid way to charge to the expansion battery pack? I mean that would be super helpful in cases like Puerto Rico and other remote communities since people wouldn’t need to be close to the whole solar array and could create their own micro grid from neighbour to neighbour using a cheap ac network alternative. Love your videos man

Jehu, of course this is better than the Kodiak, because it was built with love. You were saying with the connected booster power you could do 6000Watts of output, aren't you limited to the maximum output of the inverter and it has a maximum 'surge' output of 4000Watts. I am definately going to build one of these one day along with turning my Bus Electric :)

Beautiful build. My only "beef" is the use of Neutrik Powercon connectors. They are a standard in the world of live music production. You might consider adding indelible tags to mark those. Also, they are rated for 20a of current. You might consider the larger Anderson power pole connector. But alas, it is your project. I hope my constructive criticism shows I was listening with keen interest as you described your project.

I think you are misinterpreting the point of him adding the 12v Jack's. People where throwing shade over Jack's so he basically said "fuck you this is diy if i want to add one (or not) I can". Wich is kind of the point of diy builds. why would you buy a consumer product if you have the ability to make one that is just as good if not better and is tailored to fit your exact needs. Maybe he didn't want the Jack's but put them to prove a point. He wasn't passing it of as if it were already there but kind of like "oh how did these get here" in a second language kind of way
@karljay7473

That looks awesome. Just wondering, how many of those batteries would it take to make a car/truck battery. Say a standard 600 CCA 12V battery. I see they are about $5/each and I saw someone make a motorcycle battery out of some $10 "welding" high output LiPo batteries that look maybe the same size. Would love to see a car battery that lasts a lot longs and maybe the user can rebuild them by replacing some batteries.

It's easy to criticize on a finished project rather than get your hands dirty and build it from scratch. I mean I like Kodiak, but it doesn't mean I have to hate yours. It's not a either-or scenario. If you can afford to buy the kodiak, go ahead and enjoy. If you can't and wanna build one by yourself, I think this one is cool and full of capability, plus, if you want to add fuses and other modification. that's totally fine too. It's open frame. another thing better than kodiak ;-)

I was wondering if someone can think of a generic/flexible way of using the batteries. What I mean by this is: "I would like to use the same batteries for both powering the things in my house/RV but also use it in my e-bike and also use them in a troller motor for an inflatable boat. The idea is kind of following the logic of the Home Depot Ryobi Tools where the same battery can be used with all the Tools. We know that one of the most expensive parts of Solar Energy is the Batteries, the same apply to e-bikes and troller motor for an inflatable boat. So, I am waiting for someone to come with an easy/cost effective way of using the same batteries in these 3 different scenarios. Actually I can even think about a 4 which is to jump start a car like the NOCO Genius Boost. The DEWALT DXAEPS2 kind of does most of these things, but can't expand by adding more Lithium cells and also cant just use it to power e-bikes and troller motor. I don't want to have one set of batteries for my e-bikes, another for my troller motor, another for my car jumper and another for powering appliances. I want to have the flexibility to use the same system in multiple scenarios!!

Hey man, I’ll go with a 6th grade TJ dropout bottom feeder’s build any day over a so called first world educated hater’s non- build. Love yer show, Jehu.

Jehu you still need fuses! You are not protecting against internal shorts.

Because he's not a manufacturer and couldn't even begin to meet demand. And the whole point of his channel is Do It Yourself, not have somebody else do it for you.

Hey!! I love your videos and I am attempting to learn to build one of these. Is there a way you can show or have on any of your sites steps how to build this box? I have clicked on several links on the description, like the lipo cells but they are not the same or there anymore. Let me know is there is an updated list or a separate link where everything can be found. Thanks for being awesome with this!

I say ignore the Kodiak fans. Your system is better because you built it. You know everything about your system making it easier for you to repair. They are jealous of your skills and your confidence to act upon them.
