I spent far to long after your Daughter came out, thinking, "You need to go in for your lunch" good install of solar, I'm thinking of getting a stand alone panel to connect to my C-tek while we are camping, just to keep the leisure battery topped up.

Have to admit, my heart was beating faster when I saw you drilling that hole. Tears and a trip to A&E came to mind. Both hands, next time, please. And a backing block on the blind side if there's access. Sorry, I'm a retired engineer and my wife's an operating theatre nurse. We have a habit of seeing accidents waiting to happen and the consequences later. Good project though. Well done. All we want now is an end to lockdown and warmer weather so we can get our T6 back to following the slow roads. 😷👍

Great vid. Thanks! I happened upon your vid after independently doing something similar: except I'm going with a setup totally separate from my cvan's current electrics. Using an ecoflow delta2 power station and a couple of 180w microcrystalline solar panels (w' a reinforcing panel that I can detach/attach to move about and find the sun). The 1800w ecoflo allows me to power an air fryer, etc alfresco cooking. And the system allows me to lend it all to my friends for them to enjoy off grid mega power if they want it 😊 liking your honest, humble, relaxed vids 😊 sharing your experience 👍 informing others and allowing people to then choose their best way that suits them, on their own journey 👍😊

Like the videos! I converted a.small van last year and put solar in, it's a game changer! I've also been living off-grid with mainly solar for power for about 10 yrs. I would have had the solar go straight into the leisure batteries and connect the external battery to the 'load' on the charge controller. You can have the load output switched by voltage so you don't have flat domestic batteries. Charging a battery from a battery is so inefficient. I've got 150w on my van and it isn't really enough in the UK for extended trips, so a second panel will never be a waste of money!
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures 4 года назад
Thanks Stephen, I have actually now changed it slightly, I now run (via a splitter) the solar stright to the battery (via the CTEK split charger) and also split it to the 150w inverter power bank too, I will do an updated video soon. You are right, 150 just wasnt enough, I may also get an inverter and have a few batteries running (I am thinking AGM ones) all good stuff though! Stay safe bud

@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures I was wondering whether I need a splitter. My leisure batter isn’t connect to my alternator. I have solar panels connected to the leisure battery (via a controller) but can I connect a CTEK mains charger directly to the battery terminals as well for when I am hooked up?

IDEA! further to the below... (it cut out some of my final comments) ... Drilling into the roof inside the pop-tops' material skirt (as far back as possible) means:- There is only 1 hole to make The cables simply go down via the cable roof gland, through the roof via 1 hole and simply turn through 90 degrees into the top of the rear electrical cabinet (on drivers side) where my BEAUDENS Power unit is... ...so much more simple than routing out and in and along as you chose to do... Also a consideration was ... The rear of the pop top doesn't have much use/traffic and so for me wont cause any problem with cables tied in there... Hope this is helpful and hopefully interesting to some... any comments / advice greatly received .. Paul

Hi there, Great Video! Few Questions, and an idea!: 1 What did you use to clean the surfaces? Special grease cleanser wipes? Or simple Soap & water? 2 Did you contemplate putting 2 nylon Nuts & Bolts, through the two front ringed holes through the roof, to ensure that the panel would not fly away under any circumstances? I'm just about to do the same polycarbonate sheet plus the panel on my Mazda Bongo using 3M 5952 double sided VHB tape.. (as I just don't trust B&Q double sided carpet tape) do you think the bolts would be overkill? 3 Also I'm going to use a cable gland on my roof and seal that with SIKA silicone, however the MC4 connectors on the Panel just don't go through the glands' waterproof holes... my question is, how did you get both your MC4 connectors on the panel cables through the drilled hole, as i believe they wouldn't both fit? I'm contemplating taking the MC4 connectors off, and putting back on, on the other-side of the roof gland and after the drilled hole. 4 Do the fiberglass roof hole edges need to be sealed with epoxy resin to keep damp from seeping into the fiberglass?? FYI MY IDEA I thought long and hard about this .... I am planning to drill straight into my roof, BUT BUT BUT , as near to the back as possible AND importantly INSIDE the pop top's material wall. wouldn't Anyway, great videos and keep them coming! Looking forward to your reply, Cheers Paul

Interesting points raised mate. Have seen other videos where they threaded bolts from under the corrugate as an extra safety. If you get round to installing it, chuck up a video. Always helps the next one of us trying it! Also considering running them inside the top as not sure I have a grommet suitable by the door (vivaro) Good luck with it.

Do you have to unplug the battery charger when running the engine (using the split charging system) or does the power pack know not to charge at the same time? I had a few issues with the panel coming away (user error mainly) when driving to Camper Jam, (slight panic and lots of ductape haha) but a few screws and its as tight as anything now... On a sunny day the 100w panel can charge the leisure battery before lunch especially when its facing the sun (pop top up) - The battery is a 120ah AGM (just a cheap one from Amazon) - But I am thinking of going Litium, I just need to sell a few kidneys first haha... I wonder what the life of these panels are, I’ve seen fold up panels that may have a longer life. Trouble is you need the space inside to carry them and they can be stolen if left out while you are away from van. Any thoughts?

Great question, I think time will tell with this panel, it's working well now and hopefully will do so for a while to come. Having said that, if it does stop working, it's a very simple removal of the panel and a tiny bit of wiring to do vs the huge job in the first installation. Personally I think solar panels on top (whether bendy or ridged) are the way forward as you can forget about them (unlike the fold up ones) there are advantages to the fold up ones as you can point them at the sun more accurately but it's just another thing to store and think about when setting up for me so I steered clear of them.

Have you got a link for the elasticated wire thing that pulls the pop top canvas in? Not seen those before.

Hey Adam, don't know why I missed this comment mate.. So the answer to your question is I have installed 2 different panels now. Not because the one I installed in this video was bad, the install was great. I have just changed a few things since this video... The new one is up on Friday this week ;)

I'm definitely adding another solar panel 100w is brilliant but 200w is better MORE POWER 😂! Also if you check out my new video explaining my set up in more detail there has been a few changes. Might help you with your decisions!

@Yorkshirepoptopadventures

Hiya its just B&Q's own double sided (for use outside) tape. It's still solid on now and I haven't had to replace it. As long as you properly clean the roof before applying

Great video of something i've been toying with for a while. I notice you use just the 1 panel but have space for another in future. I'm looking to install 2 panels on my Poptop. You don't show using the Solar Charger Controller. Do you actually use one/need one?
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures 3 года назад
Thanks buddy, in this video I plugged the solar panel directly in to the Beaudens power bank (info at the end of the video) which in its self has an MPPT controller inside built in. There have been a few slight changes since I installed this panel as I now send the two red and black wires directly to my CTEK split charger (that has inputs for the alternator and also solar charge input with MPPT too) - The only down side to this is that I cant see how much power the solar panel is generating. But when the sun comes out the voltage meter rises to about 15v (AGM battery) so I know its working. Hope this helps
@TheYellowDmon
@TheYellowDmon 3 года назад
@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures I have the CTEK 250 split charger too. Good thing for pointing out that the CTEK does also the MPPT. Saves me buying a separate unit.

@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures Hi there, thanks for sharing your experiences and great vids. Having watched your solar install video and reading the comments is was thinking of replicating your solar build with one panel. The Beaudens in this case would be good as it has a built in MTTP controller, so that would save me money. I'm not sure my split charger does have MTTP controller so I will check. Can I ask why changed your original wiring and bypassed your Beaudens MTTP in favour of going direct to the split charger? Was there a limitation on the Beaudens which forced that decision? Cheers
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures 3 года назад
@@D_Squizzle Hiya buddy, thanks for your question. The reason I went straight to the split charger is because its a more efficient way of charging the leisure battery. (Basically I dont have to do anything). Its what the CTEK 250 Is built to do. However, I did take a splitter off the panel so that it would also charge the Beaudens power bank (so its always fully charged and ready to go should I need it) I am currently filming an updated video and will explain in more detail as much as I can. Hope your split charger takes solar and is MPPT too, that would make life easier.. ;)
