Brilliant. I wish I had seen this video before I made my setup. I just ran about 800 feet of 1/2" black piping, 200ft in the typical youtube wood frame coil, 300 feet back and forth on a south facing fence, and the last 300 feet coiled over the exhaust fan of my AC. I get a consistent output of about 40-44 degrees C on 30 degree days and 35 on a regular day. Currently my pump is only moving about 180 liters of water per hour from a 10,000 liter pool. I love how clean this looks and don't mind higher volume of water with a lower temp of 30 degrees C as 30 degree water is plenty warm.

Great idea! I think I will try this but make the frame float on top of the pool so not only it would heat the pool (pump being run by solar panel outside pool) but it will function also as a pool blanket.
@haroldwestrich3312
@haroldwestrich3312 Год назад
I like your stream of thought, however; The energy you get for heating your water is exactly the square inches of your solar collector multiplied by the energy of the sun. When you cover your pool water surface with this - it eliminates exactly the square inches of sunlight from hitting your pool directly. This means you net gain would be ZERO when compared to having a pool that is wide open to the sun PLUS a number of these panels off to the side. To make it more clear - - your pool in direct sun will heat up eventually. Now if you put a solar collector that is exactly the size of your pool - above the pool as a sun shade - your pool will NEVER warm up unless the collector is running and at best your pool would gain 75 to 80% of the suns power while being cooled by the ambient air. Remember your losing radiant heat from the collectors as well as evaporative losses from the pool's water evaporation (Which Is HUGE)

This is the best DIY designs I have ever seen ! ! Curious why you used tinted PC sheet? it seems that clear would be a little better (not much but would help) . ALSO: It helps to reduce reflection if you lightly remove the shiny surface from the top side the same way you roughed the bottom surface for the paint. Shiny surfaces reflect a pretty high percentage of sunlight especially when the sun is hitting it at an angle (the more the angle the more reflective losses you get and past 45° you get very little energy.) Thank you so much for the video. NOTE: if anyone talks about shading their pool with these panels - they need to calculate in the loss of direct sunlight going into the pool water - therefore they would need to build many more panels than the number it takes to cover the pool - it's best to shade an area beside the pool . of course if the pool is built into a greenhouse type enclosure they will be preventing evaporative losses so they could benefit from panels on the roof of that. AGAIN : Best system I have seen because this system utilizes every square inch and does not rely on conductivity of copper or any pipe before heating water ! ! ! AWESOME THANK YOU

I heat my pool with 10 x 1.4KW Solar thermal panels as 2 x 5 panels paralleled up.My temperatures off the panels are generally 60-80 C but easily go to 130 C if flow rates drop. This is pressurised to 3.5 bar so the Glycol/water mix remains liquid. This feeds a s/steel heat exchanger and gives a delta T of between 10 and 20 degrees on the feed and return of the panels. The pool water however has a gain of just 1-2 degrees Celsius but with a massive flow rate. The pool will gain about 8 c a day with good sun, topping out at 32 degrees c. Beware - Solar Panels can be very hot, when things go wrong and the panels boil, the water will go to 160 degrees Celsius !!!

great video. how long does it last at those temperatures? I find that my pool water cools the pipes down in the solar heater I made using black hose coiled on black wood... so the first 5 minutes are fantastic warm water. but then the pipes can not maintain the temperature under the sun alone. so my 33 degrees output quickly drops to 24/25 degrees which just doesn't heat up my 4000L pool enough. I've since made a wood burner

you're flowing too much water. Literally rushing past your heater before it's heated. The same thing would happen on a wood burner if you were outpacing the heated surface with flow. Use a lower gpm/lpm pump, perhaps even a solar powered one (like fountains use) and you'll be shocked at the difference.
@TheRealBaDaBingDK

@James-ou7sx

@@TheRealBaDaBingDK It's not nothing. The hotter the water gets the less efficient it is at heating the water. Like if the water hits max temp half way through the panel the flow is too low. The colder you can keep the whole thing by having a higher flow the more you will heat the pool overall.

@MrDuck59
@MrDuck59 3 года назад
As you run pool water, likely with chlorine the algea would not quickly become an issue. Practice should, however provide further insight into when algea would develop. You should definitely make a bypass for the system so you can decide whether you want to run water through the heating system for two reasons. When you want to stop heating your pool, or more importantly when you want to heat your pool you don't want the system to run at night as it will likely decrease the temperature. However stopping the system when your pool is hot enough introduces another problem. The system will continue to heat and especially when incased in glass temperatures can become to hot, resulting in deformation of the polycarbonate. So, al lot of things to consider.
