DIY Sta-Lok Standing Rigging On An Old Sailboat | Sailboat Story 83

It's time to replace the 38 year old standing rigging on our Endeavour 32 sailboat.
In this video, I replace the 4 lower shrouds. Those are the wires that run from deck-level, up to the height of the spreaders.
Ever since buying this sailboat, I've had thoughts of replacing the standing rigging. The decision was made for me when some of the wires were damaged during hurricane Irma.
This will be the biggest project we've tackled yet, and we'll be doing all of the work ourselves.
Thanks for watching!!

About 20 years ago, I did a circumnavigation. Just before leaving we replaced the rigging. We had a pro cut the wire and put swages on the top ends, then we installed Sta-Loks at the deck ourselves. About 1/2 way around, I examined the rig closely and found that out of 11 elements of the standing rigging, about 6 had broken strands at the swages. None of the Sta-Loks were compromised, although that's where the water is.

Ben, well done ! you're obviously a very competent guy, you had a well thought out strategy , and are very safety conscious. I'm sure you would have completed the rigging project by now. Really enjoyed this one. I too absolutely detest heights. Have replaced the rigging on my 22 footer, but dropped the mast to do it. I watched this episode twice and still can't comprehend how you ascended and then seemed to be locked in place with your hands free. I think a mast ascension system is likely a necessity for the do it yourselfer and I hope to learn a safe and effective method.
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 6 лет назад
I use a "Top Climber". It's basically just 2 ascenders hooked to a board that you sit on. You slide them up a rope about 6" at a time. Takes about 5 minutes to get to the spreaders.

I always look forward to your new adventures & I love your informative videos, you make the job look like a walk in the park...which I don't really think it was. Good to see you again Ben! You have more guts than me, climbing way up there all by your lonesome self.....but then you're about half my age, lucky duck! I don’t have a fear of heights...just a healthy fear of falling. Actually, I’m ok with the falling...it’s the hitting the ground part that I dread. So I’m impressed with your mast climbing. But what were those knots? They weren’t bowlines. Glad they held anyway. Thanks for another tremendous video. And for not going “splat” at the end.

Sure. I'll do that. I can tell you this though - here's how you know if you're doing it right... At the end of the climb, if absolutely every muscle in your body hurts, including ones you didn't even know you had... You're doing it right.

Noooo. Definitely not giving up, although we're also not officially back either. The videos will continue to be slowly released for a while. Planning on a Octoberish departure for Abaco on Sandflea. That's when the videos will ramp back up to their usual release schedule. We really want a bigger boat, but we also really want to just get back out there. Hey Ben, Nice work on the lowers. You probably already addressed this but in case you haven't... how old are your chain plates? I just replaced my rigging and pulled all my chainplates. The chainplates themselves were fine but 30% of the bolts were badly corroded...they were 24 years old. I replaced them all and then rebedded with butyl tape. It wasn't too bad a job on my boat. I know on some boats they can be buried in cabinets and fiberglass but the rig is only as strong as its weakest link. Glad to see you posting a new video.
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 6 лет назад
I haven't looked at all of them, but I think I might as well. You'll see why now is a good time in the next video. The chainplates are original, as far as I can tell. They're not very plate-like at all on the E32. They're these triangular brackets that are bolted to both the deck and hull. They're not much fun to get to. Would you mind coming to the boat and handling that part for me?

I must say, you are an incredibly brave man, climbing that mat with no one else around. Not for the obvious safety concerns. No, you had that covered. But for the extra trips down and up and down and up... Dang it! I dropped the pliers. But I have needle nose polluters in the other pocket. (smiles smugly) shoot! I dropped those too!... Down ya go. And up with only the needle nose, regular pliers went swimming. Now... You tied off the stays with a bit of rope so you can't drop those. You tired another line to the halyard so you can haul it back down when finished. What about the pins? And the cotter pins that go in them? 4 of each. Murphys law says Anything, so that's 8 items. Let's say you are above average and we will go with 75%success. So while putting the pins and such in, you manage to drop 2 more items. We will assume you learned your lesson with the pliers and tied them to your wrist with a small line, so those are safe. So at least 2 extra trips down and back up. In addition to the extra one to measure the size of the pins you needed to order. I'm kind of starting to think you actually LIKE climbing the mast!
@corybrown994

well Ben my vote would be water it worked for the astronaut's. and beside your not a lone up there , more then likely someone has you on there phone ready to post a you tube of some guy taking a long fall and a sudden stop. probably go viral. but no doubt you will be more then safe, like the video next time get the ladies down there with you, and molly must be a foot taller now and much cuter. till next time .
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 6 лет назад
I think the concrete would be better. The water pretty much guarantees that I'd drown, as the 2x harnesses would keep me tied to the sinking mast. At least with the concrete, I'd have a chance at living - albeit in a horribly mangled state. Yes, that was my actual thought process as I was sizing up the situation while aloft.

@redoak472
@redoak472 6 лет назад
If you had removed and replaced only two at a time it would have been safer (for example: starboard-forward and port-aft, secured them, and then the other two.) Your mast wouldn't have been wobbly. Expect murphy's law and a speed boat goes by with a big wave just when you are up the mast with all four shrouds removed.

@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 6 лет назад
Yep. I got 2 different quotes in Maryland before we bought the boat. $8000 from one guy - $9000 from another. Without considering my time, I save about $7000ish by DIYing it.
@DavidVoehringer
@DavidVoehringer 6 лет назад
OK, guess I should confront my fear of going up the mast (and I have 3 of them).... From your estimate Pro - $9x3 = $27k DIY $1.5 x 3 = $4.5k. $27-4.5 = $22.5k savings if I conquered that fear. Feeling of satisfaction of doing it myself and knowing how it was done - priceless!!.
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 6 лет назад
