We are building a tiny houe, and this is one of my favorite DIYs of the
build! To save money, time, weight and even a little headroom, we
stained up our subfloor in the tiny house! You won't believe how
beautiful it is!

Our cabin has plywood floors, also dark stained. One thing my Dad and I did just as something fun to do... used a black marker and a long piece of scrap and made 'plank lines'. We had no idea just how good it would come out. With the few area rugs we have down - we constantly have people commenting on how amazing the plank flooring is until we grin and tell them to take a closer look. Sometimes have to even tell them what they are looking for. LOL Just something to consider, or if not, something for others to consider. Looks great guys!

I love this and have been considering working with my plywood sub-floor to save on expenses. The big tip I have taken away from this video is the 50/50 of stain and paint thinner. Thank you

whats the color of the stain?
@auntcocoskitchencraftsandf1181
It looks like what i think a tiny house floor should look like. The only thing i would have done different is to use the saw dust and some kind of filler to hide the small gaps in the plywood. then sanded and stained it.

I like it when they rip it to look like wide pine, and it helps it not to look like 4x8 sheets, so seems become a feature rather than an eyesore.

You'll never need to worry about cutting the wrong size, spin in circles or waste time trying to figure out what goes where... With ryan's detailed shed plans ru-vid.comUgkxT9ExVpR-3A-9rpRqx8vzXKZ3BMMTg_KH , it makes building sheds a breeze - just like putting lego bricks together! You'll be able to create the kind of shed, your neighbors and other woodworkers will secretly envy (while mumbling nice job under their breath).

Hey, If you ever get tired of the color stain? Try picking thin plywood sheets with equal pattern and glue down with Weld wood glue and try a different stain. You have unlimited colors and patterns also.
@famousforever8556
@famousforever8556 5 лет назад
and don't forget to replace every two months as it warps, dents and layers peel apart as the temp and humidity changes and the weight put on normal floors tears it up. There is very little strength in thinner sheets of plywood, with 1/4 inch consisting of one layer of veneer and two layers of glued wood byproducts which vary by manufacturer. Even 3/4" Plywood is iffy. Use birch made in China and your floor won't last one season. A good alternative to solid sheets of plywood that are bound to warm and peel apart? Cut the plywood into planks and finish them with a good stain and clear coat. If one of the panels becomes damaged, you only need to replace that plank instead of a while 4×8 sheet of the stuff that they price as if it was a precious metal.

I like the floor. As you said, it makes so much more sense for a vacation and work place. I spent many years working with people building beach homes. Every one insisted on putting in expensive wood flooring --- then spent a huge amount of time and energy trying to police every man, woman, child, dog, and cat who walked in the door to keep them from tracking sand in. Seriously, sometimes it was like a constant litany: "Someone tracked sand in! Who tracked this sand in? You're going to ruin my beautiful floors! Now look at this mess I have to clean up!" And on and on. What miserable vacations those people had, in their nice beach homes. Just a little common sense would have pointed towards a solution like yours, putting in floors that were inexpensive and easy to keep up. How much more fun that would have been for the whole family!

I love this floor. I didn't have money to tile my kitchen or install fancy flooring, so I added plywood like you did, but, filled in the nail holes and edges to make it as if it were one large piece of wood. Then in my kitchen I painted the classic black and white tiles. Since my space was so tiny, I made the square not really squares, kind of an Alice in Wonderland trick, making the kitchen look larger than what it was, an illusion. Then in my living room I had the tile look as well. But in my bedroom, I really painted it up, with square and a funny theme and surprising pink trim around the edges. The only thing I battled with was polyurethane coatings. Which is the most durable? The oil based yellowed over time, bummer, but, the water based wore out faster. My house doubled as my workshop.

This was an answered prayer. We are doing our own tiny house on 20 acres and have been out so much money preparing the land. We decided we needed to do something a bit cheaper for our flooring for now to hurry and get in it before winter. This is a beautiful option. Thanks for sharing.

Do that and see yourself replacing it every season where the floor contracts and expands. Especially with plywood, where there will be a degree of warping both as it dries out even more since being milled, as it moves with the weight transfer put upon it and the wood follows its grain as it twists from both being kiln dried and tension being released when cut into its current size. Wood products sold in big box stores fly from the point where the tree is cut, through the milling process and dried too quickly in the kilns. Even then, these common building supply woods are still green and contain a fair bit of water when on the shelf, which is why you see so much of it warped and cupped to hell on the shelves. Any caulking, sealing, or use of any product that binds to the wood and another surface will not last. Especially with a product such as silicone that also shrinks and receeds at its own rate. If you just have to do this for whatever reason, use acrylic sealant. If its for looks, for thin gaps just use wood filler and stain it the colour of your floor, or for large gaps, a piece of twine (non-synthetic) the size of any gaps to fill them and stain them the colour of your floor if needed. There should be videos on RU-vid that show you how to do either properly.
@judichristopher4604
@judichristopher4604 4 года назад
I have even a better solution than that... I used to have a business: Furniture Stripping and Refinishing... So you could't SEE the caulking... I used watered down white glue... poured it into the hole or whatever I needed to "Fill" on the wood... but first I had "SANDED" to get a little pile of sawdust... I mixed the sawdust over the water/glue (let it set) no need to mix... the sawdust will soak down into the glue... Or you can mix the two together. Personally I like to just pile the sawdust over the glue and gently pat it down, after it dries (the next day) I sand it down... and it looks really good, because you've used the same wood as the wood you're using... Works every time, and STAINS the same too.

I bought an older double-wide that needed a complete refurbishing. I've been planning on installing a finer grade finished plywood. The home has 1,200 sf. It will save me about a thousand dollars! I'll be using some inexpensive large area rugs that I can shake out or hose down in summer. I have loads of pets so carpet wasn't an option. Wood heat and even here in Northern Montana I'll still be cozy. Thanks for the video, nice to have a confirmation of my plans. .

This is a great way to save money also. I have rentals and believe me some people have no respect for anything. So there I am again replacing something inside...mainly the flooring. So plywood, little stain, and some polyurethane makes a great floor. Trim it in with 2x4 cut on a table saw. One can get about 11 pieces for the price of one... oh!!! And did I mention that it looks great...on to the next project. Thanks guys for the video.

Love the way your floors came out! My grandparents built a "cabin" in north Idaho and my grandpas solution for flooring was to use the subfloor as well. He painted lines on it near some of the seams and put poly over the top. Floors lasted forever just fine. Our home is an 1800's home so I'm trying to retain as much period characteristics as possible. While plywood might not be period, wood is. There are sooooooo many ideas out there. Need to research to find the right one. My biggest concern was going to be the seams between each plywood panel. But, poly will resolve so that I won't have to worry about a filler not matching.

Love this! We desperately need to get rid of the carpet in our house, but can't afford to re carpet the entire house. This might be an option for us.

not my style, but a cheap solution, does not look bad at the end. Maybe if you cut strips of plywood you can make it look like a hardwood flooring

+Daniel Rodriguez That would be another great way to do plywood flooring, for this application it works. Thanks for watching!

Funny how people take a rustic/industrial idea and want to traditionalize it. That's not what it is.

Very cool. I plan to do that with a cabin I am remodeling. light honey oak stain on floor then a darker redder stain on a 4 inch molding around base.

I'm so fed up with laminate floors and carpet I told my wife I would just as soon paint the upstairs and put thrown rugs down and it would look good. She was mortified to say the least. So I looked up doing it and found your video and it looks great. As for convincing my wife ??? Hummmm I'll have to work on that .
