In Part 4 of the fence project I show my staining process and how to stain a wood fence using a paint sprayer.
The last part of my fence makeover this year is staining the fence. This year I built over 200 feet of shadowbox fence. This is a more difficult fence to stain because the boards overlap creating difficult areas to reach. When building the fence I overlapped boards more than normal to create more privacy but also made the staining process more difficult.
Luckily for me I have a friend that owns a painting company and allowed me to borrow his paint sprayer. Using this sprayer made the process much easier! It was still a ton of work but I can imagine how much longer it would have taken with a brush or a roller. Each board was sprayed a total of 4 times on each coat that was applied. This year I had time to stain the outside of the fence twice, and the inside once. It looks good but when I redo the last side of the fence next year everything will get stained with another coat. I believe I might even purchase my own sprayer.

You just gave me hope! We have 900 feet to stain and did 8 feet in 3 hrs by hand. I have a sprayer I’ll be using now. Thanks for the video. I took pointers from you when we built our shadow box fence last year. Cheers!

Great video. I'm in the process of replacing a 40 year old privacy fence. I went with the cedar and did not want the shadowbox style because of the painting issues. I'm painting all of the pickets and rails prior to building the fence. Behr makes an amazing product. I can see where a sprayer would have saved a lot of time. Thanks for your videos !

I would NOT use behr even if they paid me 😬 Over the past 3 years alone… You would not believe how many failed behr fences & decks I have done estimates for / seen from my other contractors…. It’s so bad…. We all say please be anything other than Behr & Thompsons. Behr just settled a lawsuit for their deckover line 😬 I just want others to be informed thats all There are a couple stain companies that are much smaller in size & provide outstanding products & customer service

@@CAMPFIRESKY How often are you applying more stain to the fence? Yearly… Every 2 years… 3 years.. ?? Also… have you ever let your stain go 4 - 5 years without touching it ???

@@Thestainxpert When my deck was new, stained it every 2 years for the first 4 years, and then once every 4-5 years, depending on how bad the winter was. When I moved, the deck was 18 years old, and not even a hint of rot.

Graco Magnum x5 works as well and inexpensive than the upright sprayer that you borrowed. I feel Graco has good product for both residential and commercial use. Looks great!

If you were to do this again, would you try staining during different stages of assembly of the fence (e.g., stain stringers before adding pickets)? Or maybe even spray each side of the pickets on the ground, and then nail them to the stringers?

What about overspray through the fence into next doors garden ? That if you have someone’s garden next to yours of course

I guess it all depends how much you like the people that live next door lol. I would put an old sheet or drop cloth over anything you dont want sprayed.

@@ThatTechTeacher427 only happened once as I usually use a brush. I hung a sheet on the reverse of the fence. I’m in the UK and our gardens are typically small in relation to yours. Don’t want to spray the neighbours garden furniture or young children 😳

Aloha! If you had to do it all over again, what are your thoughts on prestaining the inside of the pickets before building the fence? (so once the fence is built, you just have to spray the outside of the pickets?)

Funny you say that my dad tried to convince me to do that. I think it is a good idea but I believe I would still do it this way if using a sprayer like this way because you can fully let all the boards weather and dry before the staining process. If using a brush or roller prestaining at least 1 side would be the way to go.

Thanks, I used around 13 gallons. I assume I used more. It is really hard to tell how much maybe a gallon or two max I think but whatever it was it was worth it
