Our homemade stainless tubing bender, which we built for bending 7/8" diameter 304 stainless steel tubing (3/64" wall thickness). We needed a tubing bender to make a custom spray dodger (and possibly also a bimini top) for our 20' cat ketch sailboat. Cost was about $50 in materials and 6 hours of labor. About half of the $50 was spent on plywood and bolts, and the other half was for the 7/8" round nose router bit. Much cheaper and more effective than any of the other options we explored.

Why didnt you show your bender in action?

Hi walterronny, No plans for sale, but if you follow the instructions in the video closely, you should be able to reproduce it. All you need is some 3/4" plywood to cut the wheels, two 3/8" or 1/2" bolts for the central pivot in each wheel, a few dozen 1/4" bolts, a piece of aluminum flat bar, and the 7/8" round nose bit from Rockler (assuming you're bending 7/8" diameter tubing like I did).

I wish a had the time to build a gadget like that.Since I don't have that time I'll probably buy a used pipe bender for 20 bucks on Ebay instead.

Tell me, how would you bend a 19.685 foot pipe (6m) into a radius of 16.407 feet?

LiveDontWatch Hi, The size wasn't a typo ;) I want to bend a 19.685 foot (6m) long tupe, with 1.49606" (38mm) OD and 0.0787402" (2mm) thick wall, into an arc that's 16.4042foot (5m) wide and 3.28084foot (1m) tall, but with a much smoother / "more professional" finish that you would with a diagram and pipe bender. On that lenght of pipe I would guess I'll get a lot of "bents", instead of a smooth arc

Mandrel: What size should the Mandrel be? .... Based on the below mentioned What if my radius is of 2 feet 11" (Diameter: 5" 11' or 1,803.4mm), with O.D. wall thickness of 10SWG (~3.25mm) | Material (Pipe): Aluminium.

I’m needing to bend some 3.5 inch diameter stainless .049 wall tubing to a radius of 18 inches. Do you think that is possible using a setup like yours?

@Chris Child... I'm not sure what the smallest radius would be. Mine only bends to the fixed radius of the larger wheel, which I selected just based on the aesthetic appearance of the curve. @Keith Richards... I didn't show the bender in action because I didn't think to make the video until after I had already bent all my pieces for my spray dodger. After I told and showed a few people how well the pieces turned out, I was bombarded with questions about the bender, and then made this video.

I think the force required increases exponentially as you shorten the radius of the bend. I would guess it would be quite a challenge to do a 5" radius bend without a hydraulic press. I don't think I'd attempt anything less than an 8" radius by hand like this, and even that might be pushing it. Very sorry to hear your attempt failed, though.

Now that's how you do a tutorial video folks. Thanks Live. Great info.

Sorry, I bent all the pieces I needed to before I thought to make the video. I'll probably do some more in the future, and if so, then I'll be sure to film the bends as I make them.

Cool design, great video. I need to bend 1 1/2 tubing to build tide doors for my Jeep. I think your design will do it for me. I’ll need a tighter radius.

Nice food for thought. I like the idea of not needing to turn steel dies.

What is the smallest radius can you bend on 1" OD tube? or even 7/8" tube
