BREAK THROUGH and yes Sybil is right!!! (read through the comments, and you know). I have been successful at sewing the crown of this hat, that's the part that sits a top of my head, I tried it on and thus far it's good, the problem I ran into, was once I completed the crown of the hat, I had to actually turn the crown of the hat inside out before starting the brim of the hat, YES you have to turn the crown of the hat inside out, so when you attach the tighter woven placemat material to create the brim, you are on the correct side of your last sewing position, and now you can actually continue sewing the brim, as shown in this video, and yes it seems tiny gathers, are required for at least 3 inches out from the crown or more in efforts to keep the brim flat. I'm guessing that how much gathering required will depend on the size brim your are trying to achieve if using 3 or 4 placemats otherwise you'll get this puckering brim section.

Hello to make a wider brim how do you straighten the curve of the mat straw? I am struggling with getting the matting straight as the placemats have been curved for so long, mostly in the middle section of the mats. I hope you can help, thank you.
@xmobile.
@xmobile. 2 года назад
Tiny gathers are required? --I have no idea what this means. This tutorial looked so easy. I've failed miserably at trying to replicate my own. I can only get the crown to get wider at the bottom.. i can't figure out how to get the brim to go flat like a giant ring round my head. I try to keep it tilted at the correct angle for the bottom to happen, but my needle and thread holder bits also keep coming down to smash the crown and get stuck into the hat material. Gah!
@tjcox4213
@tjcox4213 2 года назад
@@xmobile.hard to explain but i will try, if you pull on the material you are sewing it tends to stretch longer, but if you push in on the material you are sewing it pulls the material closer together, watch the video really close, watch her fingers, you can see she pushing in slightly as she is sewing in the round. all the best.

Before you started sewing the brim, you turned the crown of the hat inside out. I think you should have stated and shown that. I am a senior citizen, we made these hats in high school so I understand what you did but someone not familiar who is making this hat for the first time could be confused. When filming a tutorial you should show and explain everything you do. every point is important to a beginner.

I have tried doing this and cannot get the brim. Just wants to continue going straight down no matter what I do. I am an experienced sewer of over 40 years and am baffled. What is the trick to get the brim going cause nothing I do works. I have a small head and as such store bought one size fits all does not fit me. Figured this would be perfect to make it to fit my head so I made the base and the head portion smaller but the brim will not go flat for me. How many of you have actually made this and how many tries?
@LuAnnSkaggs
@LuAnnSkaggs 3 года назад
Fay Weikum! I'm very sorry, my editor glossed over the part where I was talking about how to make sure the brim of your hat stays flat. When you start the brim you want to start with a new piece that has a tight curve, then while you're sewing the brim especially in the beginning, you want to push the weave that you're sewing a little bit so we can have a bit of a gather, and that will help it to lay flat, try to pay close attention to the front part of the video, as I am sewing the brim. Hope this helps 😊🤍🤍🌹🤍🤍.

Wow!!! Jules! Thank you so much. When I started RU-vid, one of my biggest insecurities was my accent and if anyone would understand me. You guys with your wonderful comments, have helped me so much with being myself, accent and all. You are wonderful and made my day. So thanks again 🥰💝🤍🌹🤍💝.

I like the four mats. Just curious is it easy to add a wire to to Edge so I can also shape it differently?

There was a RU-vid DIY video that showed using placemats like that to make a purse out of them. You can have a matching purse to go with your hat. 👒👛👜

This is so clever, I have a small head and have a hard time finding hats that fit and until recently didn’t know how easy it was to crochet them, but I never thought I could sew one like this. Thank you, thank you. I even have a juki sewing machine

I am having the same issue. The brim portion is not working for me. Mine is just hanging long so I may cut it into a bucket hat. I think the mat I am using is too soft.
@ohnoitsmeeks
@ohnoitsmeeks 3 года назад
@@sheenaquagray8269 My problem is I can’t get the angle right, it slopes down sharply instead of a nice 90 degree angle between the crown and the brim.
@sheenaquagray8269
@sheenaquagray8269 3 года назад
@@ohnoitsmeeks This is my problem as well. I read more of the comments and see that she says her editor cut out a piece....TJ Cox got it (you have to turn the crown of the hat inside out, so when you attach the tighter woven placemat material to create the brim, you are on the correct side of your last sewing position, and now you can actually continue sewing the brim, as shown in this video, and yes it seems tiny gathers, are required for at least 3 inches out from the crown or more in efforts to keep the brim flat. I'm guessing that how much gathering required will depend on the size brim your are trying to achieve if using 3 or 4 placemats otherwise you'll get this puckering brim section)
@ohnoitsmeeks
@ohnoitsmeeks 3 года назад
@@sheenaquagray8269 True. I had figured out quickly the hat needed to be turned inside out to continue sewing the brim, but I guess the “gathering” has me tripped up.
