In my spare time, I love to design objects that solve a daily problem... Today, i wanted to design a pair of sunglasses.
I started as always with some sketches, to understand the style i wanted, decided that i wanted to print at least 2 frames, in order to test which one was better for my face.
After having a rough idea, i started modeling them in 3D… I have to say that this is my day to day job, so i knew already dimensions, curvatures and other technical parameters to keep in consideration. In general was a really easy an fast process for me to do in this case.
After having them 3D modeled, was time to print… after some issues with quality due to some Octolapse settings that i will need to tweak in the future, i managed to print all the parts.
The assembly is simple, and as soon as i got them ready, i sent some pictures to friends, asking which one of the 2 should be the finished one, after around 20 messages from different persons, the decision was made…. The Number 2 (More squared version)
In a couple of hours i cutted the lenses, and made the bevel to fit them inside the frame (yep is longer that you might expect by hand)
And…… I was ready to rock my new sunglasses on!!

Hey Massimo, I am so happy to see this video. I really am so desperately looking all over the internet to understand the process of Eyewear 3D Modelling. With the recent technological advancements the 3d Prototyping is really not a challenge but I am not able to crack the designing part of it. Can you please suggest the best designing platform that I should learn to be able to better understand 3D modelling of Eyewear?

Ciao Massimo, come esattamente hai fatto le cerniere? il pernetto è attaccato alla stanghetta laterale oppure è un pernetto in plastica separato?
@masslona

Attaccato all'asta

Bravo Massimo. Nice time lapse for a cartesian 3D printer. Hmm I'm looking more for a way to recycle my GF broken glasses. Our kids break them every month one pair (she also is not extremely careful I could say) Probably I'm going to use 1.75 mm filament for the hinge or you have other recommendations.
@masslona
@masslona 5 лет назад
Thank you! I didn't understand very well where they are broken, is the hinge broken? In which material are they ?
@MixedGears
@MixedGears 5 лет назад
Usually, the broke at the hinge, but also other places.
@masslona
@masslona 5 лет назад
If they are made of cellulose acetate you can use acetone to repair them (I think there are also RU-vid video about it) otherwise you can follow the diy road as you said! I found pla works ok, but after a bit of time it becomes loose due to friction.

Hi Massimo, nice job here. Where’d you find the uncut lenses ?
@masslona
@masslona 2 года назад
Thank you, you can find them online also on Alibaba or other websites. I believe i found these on at a decent price on Ebay. Simply look for "Uncut Sun Lenses"

Hi Massimo, have you tried with liquid resin printing? could you solve the situation with the hinges?
@masslona
@masslona 5 лет назад
At work we have a stereo lithography 3d printer with different material options, apart from being much more precise, can print in materials that emulates high resistance plastic. And for the hinges I think would be just a matter of right material, but.... No I didn't try any other print or material, was just a "one shot/one weekend" project 😅

@@masslona Do you think is a good idea to sell pesonalized frames ? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NcjuBMm0vZ8.html

Why did you printed it stand and not laying? Thanks Massimo :)
@masslona
@masslona 3 года назад
Hi! Mainly because of the resolution, if they were printed laying the quantity of layers would have been much less, resulting in more visible layers. Another point was durability, printed laying would have meant that the layers follow the bending of the frame, doing so having more chance of breaking. Hope this help!

Hello Massimo, is the design for your sunglasses available for public download?
@masslona
@masslona 4 года назад
Hello! Thanks for the comment, I prefer not to give these 3d files being glasses considered a medical device, and for this reason they have to follow specific rules to be used. This was just a weekend project I did in order to show what you can achieve with simple materials and technologies available at entry level

How many hours did it take to produce one item?
@masslona
@masslona 4 года назад
Hello, i don't really count the time during these projects, being for fun. But i can say that, Concept phase lasts normally 3/4 hours, modelling 2/3 hours and printing I THINK was around 5 hours total, for finishing lenses and so on i don't really know since i did it when i had a bit of free time in the evening. So let's say 12h in total without finishing. Always to consider that IT IS NOT A COMPLETE PRODUCT, more of a HANDMADE PROTOTYPE.. being the research, concept and creation phase really shortened compared to normal products. Hope this helps!

what material use?
@masslona

I used Pla since they are just prototypes. More precisely galaxy black pla by Prusa
@soys3d845
@soys3d845 5 лет назад
@@masslona Is it resistant or is it only prototype? Is not it functional?
@masslona
@masslona 5 лет назад
@@soys3d845 it is functional, you can wear it and use it. The downside is that it is not as a final frame in injected plastic or acetate, it can brake if you fall or if you take a hit. Meaning it's not following security standards, so has to be considered as a functional prototype.
