For all the negative commenters, what do you think people used back in the day before sunscreen was manufactured?
@elisa4612
@elisa4612 3 года назад
That’s like the point. People got cancer from not having a proper way to protect themselves, and improvised. If it would have worked so well, something like a sunscreen didnt even have to be developed. It is literally protecting people from cancern nowadays. For this exact reason something like a proper sunscreen had to be found. So how does that argument of yours even make sense?

Lol, you can mention all the doctors/chemists/dermatologists that warn against homemade sunscreens, and explain the science behind it and all the years of vigorous testing that sunscreens must go through to be proven safe and effective. Even throw in some studies that show adding zinc without proper stabilizers actually intensifies UV rays. The response is the same: "works great for our family".

I understand people have concerns about sunscreen and using only zinc (which I disagree with). Independent of that, making your own sunscreen like this is not safe or effective. Zinc only sunscreens are some of the most difficult to properly formulate even for experienced cosmetic chemists. If you want something equivalent, but that is actually effective, properly tested and formulated, I'd recommended a company like Badger.

I stumbled upon this video after my husband read me an 2020 article from Consumer Reports about the potential dangers of at least 12 chemicals used in many commercial sunscreens and that the FDA has determined they need to look more closely into the safety of sunscreens due to the long-term absorption into the body and bloodstream. This is not healthy at all. Please also read about the reactions that essential oils can have on one's skin when UV rays are involved. Could you please please put a summer video as a day-by-day follow up to see how it worked? Go out to the park every day with your baby and prove this is worth trying. My whole family are full of doctors (physicians) from all sorts of branches and I normally use natural products for almost all my personal care. I always consult about the science behind everything I put on my skin, hair, mouth and so on, by now you may understand why it is important to me to understand better the "it works great!" part. Sorry but "it works" doesn't seem to cover it. I also asked about this with my family and physician friends and no one single person recommends experimenting, specially with my child. Now, a follow up video (not a before/after, I need to understand it does work and how does it work because I`ve been actually doing lab research and doesn't seem to work) of the everyday use and exposure would be very very very clarifying and trustworthy, many live in countries where you need t go out of the house every day for many hours and kids go outside every day. thanks in advance

I'm a huge advocate for natural recipes but this "sunscreen, safe for babies" is just dangerous! Please, please, please DO NOT make your own sunscreen. Leave this to the experts . There are plenty of natural sunscreens on the market to purchase which have been formulated and tested by experts in their field. Do you even know what the SPF of this homemade "sunscreen" is? I would NEVER use this on a baby or recommend anyone use this. And as for the addition of essential oils 🤦‍♀️. Peppermint essential oil is unsafe to use on children under 3! @@XandriaRavenheart this is where you are wrong. I AM a huge advocate for natural products. However, I am also wise enough to know some things should never be made DIY. Sunscreen is one of them. How can you guarantee the SPF of a homemade sunscreen without lab testing? It's just not as simple as dumping some zinc oxide into a base. There are many factors to consider...interaction of different ingredients, PH and product stability for example. I don't know about you but I am not prepared to take that risk on myself and certainly not a baby!!! Pure essential oils pose their own risk. There are constituents naturally occurring in essential oils that can cause allergic reactions if not used within safe dermal limits and many, including peppermint EO, are not safe for children. Just because an ingredient is natural does not mean it's safe to use without understanding the possible health implications. Essential oils in particular are very concentrated and potent and if used incorrectly can be a health hazard. Please do some research.

@@ouroilyhouse okay. I’m not really worried about you and any other adult but only for the children or child. The bigger the zinc the less the protection you get plus there is more that goes into sunscreen formulation then dumping zinc in with a few other things. I don’t want to sound rude or anything but you guys can have more resistant skin to getting burned or tanning. If it really working then I’m happy but you can’t say what the spf is or anything or if you are getting any protection. This is coming from concern and nothing else. Lab muffin beauty science has a great video on this about diy sunscreen and goes into what concerns there are. I’m sure you won’t watch it but sunscreen isn’t something to screw around with.

I cringed throughout this video thinking how you have been influencing a lot of people to use DIY sun protection for themselves and their children. People tend to use SPF products for protection against CANCER. It's a serious matter and you're being very irresponsible sharing this while ignoring comments from other people who are concerned like I am. There's this one comment asking you what SPF this recipe is and you answered so vaguely I actually laughed. Thing is, you don't know the SPF because this isn't a standardized recipe and it hasn't been properly lab tested like a proper sunscreen should be. I mean, you even measure in volume and not weight, do you realize how off your recipe could be every time? All the evidence you have is anecdotal. It doesn't mean it will work for everyone. Plus you can't even be sure that this is actually working for you. On top of everything I'm just amused by how you avoid the "negative" comments here. I just hope you're consider doing a bit more research into this. You can start with Michelle Wong's (chemistry phd) video which explains why DIY sunscreen is bad. It's very simple and easy to understand. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aTNcbLHZusc.html PS I see so many supporters you have here commenting on this video how they're gonna make this and use this on themselves AND THEIR CHILDREN and maybe even selling it. It just shows how people are very easy to believe what they see without proper study. Please be more responsible with what you put out. At least put clear disclaimers.

I’ve made this sunscreen and it’ does actually work. I myself n my children have fair skin and it protects us, so the SPF level must be high enough. The only things I refuse to add is Essential Oils. And I use Shea butter instead of the coconut oil I’ve given it to family n friends n they all love it. I tested first on myself on a 43*c summers day here in Australia
@yashfehassan
@yashfehassan 3 года назад
@@alwyngreen7205 again you are using anecdotals. No one can tell if UVA/UVB rays are penetrating the skin, that's why sunscreen has to go through rigorous lab testings to calculate the efficacy of sun protection (SPF/PA). Sunscreen is literally considered a drug by the FDA, not a cosmetic, and that just shows sunscreen is not something you should be DIY-ing.

@YellowPineappleHoyas
@YellowPineappleHoyas 5 лет назад
I’d say the SPF is around 4 or less. Zinc oxide has a very very low SPF on its own and Coconut oil only has an SFP of 4-5, so this is not a sunscreen and calling it such, is very misleading and potentially dangerous. This might be a decent baby balm, but certainly will NOT protect anyone from the sun. It is very very difficult to make your own sunscreen and should be left to the experts in labs. For fair skinned people, using coconut oil on the skin in the sun can lead to very nasty sunburns (I can speak from experience). Extra virgin Coconut oil does not clog the pores and is great from all skin types. Read this for more information on the dangers of calling a product like this one, a sunscreen: www.consumerreports.org/sunscreens/homemade-sunscreen-is-a-definite-dont/
