Lovely skirt! It's a great time to remember that you don't always need to buy a new pattern; it's great to adapt something you already have, or draft it yourself with some wonderful guidance like this.

Thanks so much Chloe. I really wanted to show how it can sometimes be just as easy to draft it yourself, rather than buying another pattern!

When I’m working with fabric that really frays, I always serge the edges of fabric pieces before I sew them together. It really makes a difference.

That turned out beautifully. If you decide it needs to be shortened you could do a small pleat around the bottom of the top layer.

Thank you! I really appreciate the way you explained gathering after pinning to straight parts. I was wondering how I would know how much to gather. Also, love that you gave fabric recommendations. I’m working with a substantial stash but not sure what’s going to work well for this.

I made one out of denim - bit thicker so used zig zag and twine method to gather - also dyed my fingers blue!! Thanks for the tutorial, I'm new to sewing so lots learnt on this project.

Excellent tutorial Amelia. I have heard people talk about fashioning skirts from rectangles but your vlog made it very clear. Beautiful fabric combo. Love the purple violet for the top. I made the Blomma top but unlikely to repeat it. Will be interested to see yours. xx Karen

It's gorgeous! I have a tiered skirt but its yoke is an old pair of jeans, which goes down about 8-10 inches, so it cleared the back pockets. Then I added 4 layers of different fabrics, so way more crazy but lots of fun!

Beautiful skirt, Amelia! And great tutorial. I must admit I was quite distracted by your sewing table, your Day Two dress, and the clear storage bins in your Kalax unit. Thank you for mentioning that your sewing table is an antique. I love the built-in brass measuring stick and the rich color of the wood 😍 I'm in a new house and sewing room and will be on the hunt for something similar. May I ask the dimensions of your table, what your dress pattern is, and where you bought the small clear storage bins? I know you're very busy, so thank you in advance for taking the time to help my curious mind.
@sewamelia
@sewamelia 2 месяца назад
Thank you Alecia for your lovely comment! The dress I wore on Day Two is the Forsythe Dress (with expansion pack) by French Navy. I love their patterns! The table is about 1.5m long, but has two fold out pieces to make it about 1m longer. I found it online from a vintage seller. The clear storage bins I found on Amazon and I just chose them because they fitted the Kallax unit! Hope that helps!

Lovely, and definitely on my to sew list. I’m thinking of using a viscose linen but wonder if I have enough… how much fabric did you end up needing of the 3 metres you had? Love your videos each week!
@sewamelia
@sewamelia 2 месяца назад
I didn't have very much left out of my 3m of fabric - enough to do pockets if I had wanted to - but I decided not to add them on this skirt!

Very helpful tutorial as I'm working on a silk taffeta version. Where did the 3 seams of the third tier end up? That's where I'm stuck. Does it matter that they don't match up with second tier?
@sewamelia
@sewamelia 11 дней назад
They don't match, so if you have a plain fabric, you may prefer to do it in four panels, but either way you do end up with extra seams in the front and/or back.

May I ask? Is there a reason why you couldn’t leave all your tiers as long rectangles to gather and fit them together, and save sewing them up into a “loop” (that is, a skirt) as the last step? It seems as though once you’ve sewn your tiers into loops, and then you’re trying to fit the longer, gathered tiers into segments of the tier above, the process is going to get very fiddly and layered and it will be harder to tell which bit you’re working with.(Brand new seamstress here, if that’s not obvious!) Thanks for your help! This is my very first project.
@sewamelia
@sewamelia Месяц назад
It can get confusing, but by sewing each tier into a loop you can easily see which loop is which, from smallest to largest. I find it less fiddly to work with loops rather than trying to work with long lengths of fabric, but sewing is a personal thing, so try whichever method suits you best! 😊❤️

Love the material, and the skirt pattern really shows of the drape! I love watching your videos, you're a great inspiration. Thank you so much for being so honest on the length of time/number of days it took you to make the skirt. I agree, that it does seem that garments are being made up within 30 minutes or how ever long a video is, and I wish more people would give a guide of how long the project has taken them. @jennaphipps often says what day she is on during a project (at the moment she is renovating [gutting😱] her newly-bought house) and it does give the viewer an insight to how long something can take. Looking forward to your next project ❤
