DIY Tiny Home Septic System

My DIY homemade septic system is finally finished! I used two 55 gallon barrels, one 3 1/2 inch PVC pipe, one 2 1/2 inch PVC pipe, and some exterior caulk. The digging was the hardest part 😅
Also, I would add some water to both barrels for weight so that you won't risk the barrels lifting out of the ground from heavy rainfall, since they are basically giant air bubbles when empty.
Thanks for watching and please subscribe, good luck on your project!

Neighbor in W. Montana had ond of these for his trailer home. Gas pipe out of buried barrel produced fair bit of burnable gas too. One barrel for 1 man and occasional guests worked fine., just dont flush any tp!

Should of buried the pipes and tanks Also always add leach line and gravel at least 20-30 ft away for oder control.

Very Nice and clean looking set-up. Although, I think maybe I would have extended that drain field (end drain pipe) a good 10ft at least. Also, isn't a vent pipe needed, else you're gonna start smelling stagnant black water and/or have a build-up of natural gasses.

I'll have to post an update video at some point, I've been tweaking it here and there, added a vent and I'm extending the drain a ways further to create a more dispersed drain field. It has been working well though, especially since I'm winging it 😅✌️❤️

Seemed like a decent plan. You probably should have had A bottom less System that way the Barrels don't get filled as quickly....(ole school method Bottomless tank) But yes still have drain feels

I heard you should put gravel in the bottom of the barrels so it helps break things down, and no toilet paper 🧻 what's your thoughts on putting gravel in the barrels

Im here for the ignorant comments. So much fun! Look up septic ATU. You can process larger amounts in smaller containers quicker and better net results. 😊

Does a system like this have a riser allowing the possibility of pumping or maintenance should it need it?

See those cuts top of barrel allows the tanks to be pumped. His tops are above ground. .One person male maybe every 15 years, has been my experience

I think you are going to need some field lines with preparated pvc pipes going away from the last blue drum. I would have T-off a couple of lines with added ditches to add field line of washed pea gravel of at least 12-18 inches thick and at least 18” wide. The ditches if it was only a single one would be needed to be 50 feet long or two dual ditches at least 25 feet long. The more the T-s the shorter the field line ditch. Also before you cover up your perpetrated field pipes you could cover the top of your pipes with roofing felt paper to help keep the preparated holes in your pipes dirt cleared. I didn’t see where you filled up those blue drums with added water to keep them from floating out of their holes when it rains. You and your crews have done an excellent job right up to this point. Why not finish it correctly with added field lines?

Yes. He will eventually have septic water all over the ground surface and under the trailer. This install wasn't very well thought out. It's better to oversize the drain field than to have a swampy yard that smells like azz.

If you're wondering whether or not the barrels float out of the hole from rainfall, I put weight on top while they fill in and become heavy themselves. This has been a very rainy month and so far so good. ✌️❤️

How are you going to pump them out? Will fill up in no time. Normally septic systems are 1K like mine and they have to be pumped out every few years.

Thanks for the helpful video! Do you have an idea of how long this will last before it needs to be pumped? I'm guessing this is a job for a septic truck, so it'll need to be in a place that is accessible?@@TheDruidsDen

We had a 3 bedroom mobile home with two baths a washing machine, two adults, and two kids, the septic tank was installed years before we moved there and connected to a new mobile home. We paid to have the tank emptied after living there right at 20 years. The ground is hard red clay. The guy who we paid to clean out the septic tank said we need to have it cleaned out every 5 years. I called BS because I looked into the open tank before and after he pumped it out into his truck and most of it was liquid.

@@TheDruidsDen and going where? You need a drain field, so that pvc pipe should extend, underground, for at least 10 feet, with perforated holes along the way.

that mrcool install looks atrocious. Whats worse is the DIY electrical you did, used plumbing fittings and pipe instead of conduit. can only imagine what the wiring looks like

As a former inspector, I have a few problems with your system.. even with one or two people it's going to fill up fast. Septic pumpers. In most states are required to notify Planning and zoning when they find illegal systems. If you pump, what are you going to do with it. Most states are under the Uniform building code. Real estate companies won't sell property with illegal systems and insurance companies won't deal with you. Get legal, do it right.

@garylong4440
@garylong4440 8 месяцев назад
@@randallahey1958 Do it legally, that way you don't have to look over your shoulder wondering if someone is going to turn you in. Buy a tank and find someone to dig and trench it for you.

@@garylong4440 Not a concern here. Doing it myself off-grid I don't need the governments permission lol. I guess my main question is how big of a tank is recommended for a one person toilet? Maybe for grey water too but that's optional.
