Trail cameras are expensive and worth protecting maximize their life. Trail cams are exposed to the sun, rain, dew, and extreme temperatures on a daily basis. A simple trail camera hood can protect your camera for all the elements that can shorten it's life prematurely.
A simple way to protect your game cams is to cut a 5-gal bucket, or any size paint pale, in half and mount it above your game camera. Since it's made out of plastic it will last for many years to come.
Cellular game cameras make it a little more challenging to utilize trail camera hoods due to the raised antenna. This is overcome by using a larger hood (5-gallon bucket) and mounting it higher to clear the cellular game cam antenna.
This project is very easy, inexpensive, and quick to complete. All you need is a bucket of any size, some paint, a drill and a saw.
You spend a lot of money on all those trail cameras so make sure you protect them with a trail camera hood!
Thanks for watching!

You’re welcome! You can spare yourself the painting if you can find the camo buckets but they are rare. Tractor Supply has them sometimes. Good luck!

Just made one to cover a trail camera that I have mounted on a 5" diameter steel post in my yard for filming birds on my feeders. Previously I used an ice-cream tub (empty of course) but I've modified my set-up and now have the camera on a tilt head (with quick release plate) attached to a pole mounting bracket (as used for security cameras) secured with gear clamps - so the camera now extends further out from the pole. A 5 gallon (19L) PVC mixing bucket, cut in half (as shown in the video), works perfectly. I cut 1" slots in the half-moon 'base' part to lash it to the post with a 'tree strap'. That way I can easily adjust the height above the camera. A couple of things to note - I used an oscillating tool to cut up the bucket which melts the plastic as it cuts so I had to spend time scraping off the burs with a craft knife and sanding the edges smooth. Also the base of the bucket has a reinforced rim and is slightly raised in the middle which meant that the hood dipped when fastened to the post - so I jammed I piece of wood behind to bring it to level.

I really like the camo pattern. I've watched several diy camo painting ideas. And they make it harder than it needs to be. I really liked the way you did yours. I believe I will use your method from now on.

Those turned out great. I have hastily cut old plastic plant potters in half before but was just out of necessity for heavy snow situations. But they looked like crap. I like what you did here. This may become standard procedure. 👍

Great idea and very simple. A good source for buckets is Firehouse subs if you have one nearby. They sell pickle buckets with lids for $2 and the money goes to their charities. You will have to air these out to get rid of the pickle smell. We use the lids for target practice. Keep up the good work.

I like this concept a lot. I was always was wondering why after a rain storm my trail cameras wouldn't work properly. Only thing, I like my trail cameras to be stealth, and this idea would make them stand out more, but I might definitely still try to do it on a few.
@TheHandyHunter
@TheHandyHunter 4 года назад
I’ve used smaller paint pales like a 2.5 pint and it works great too...plus a little more stealthy. Good luck and let me know how it works out!

** TECH NOTE: The smaller bucket option like LUCKY BUCK MINERALS come in, will work perfect as well for these BF cameras. IF you are not in a weak signal area, you can tilt the antenna outward to almost a 45 degree angle and the fit nicely under these smaller hoods with better above cover. They hold up better under a wet heavier snow load than the larger 5 gallon bucket style hoods.

Funny you should say that! We have been waiting to burn 40acs but it keeps raining! I’m gonna probably wait until mid to late February to see if I can get lucky with a dry spell! Been a wet winter

Love it! Haven’t had an ounce of trouble with it. This is the one I recommend people buy if they dont want to build their own DIY. It’s held up almost 2.5 years so far and still going. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy another if I didnt have time to DIY.
