I use 3 of these dotted around my campsite. I also use 250lb breaking strain fisherman's braided line. It's dark green, so almost impossible to spot, and a fraction of the diameter of cord. Cheers for the videos and all the best, Allan

The reason that your taughtline hitch isn't holding and you need the granny knot over it, is because you haven't tight the hitch correctly. The first 2 wrape should be around the standing end and inside the loop. You tied them around the loop. It will never work correctly.
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors Год назад
You are absolutely right! I did tie it the wrong way in the video, must have been the pressure of trying to film and keep the pan lid from slipping at the same time. Being me I had to check and I've just found a random bit of rope I use for practice which had a taught line hitch already in and I'd done it the right way (over the standing end) and when I go to tie one, i do tie it naturally over the standing end. Weird one! Thanks for pointing that out. Odly the wrong way does work with a thicker rope, but it definitely tightens up more easily the correct way.

.... also you need to camo or use like colored screw eyes, thermal or IR will pick up and reflect shine..,.. Edit: IMO good 80 lb KastKing green braid around the back of the tree will slip quite nicely without the screw eyes.........

Not a bad idea if you think you need it. You want a silent alarm really. So it just wakes you up, to give you notice to run. Royal marines use bungies, just clips round the tree say at ankle level person walks into it it sets it off. A little cow bell just the tension will set it off or one or two lamps in diferent colours.. The rest can be as you do it, keep it simple.

Although a bit O.T.T. and perhaps a little fear mongering, I can see something like this maybe being useful as a comfort blanket for nervous or new wild campers, although I can't imagine anybody new to wild camping would want to set up a solo camp in a scary forest or woodland. I also think the alarms are way too loud and if they woke you up you would be in crazy panic mode and would probably hurt yourself escaping into the darkness with all the trees around because if you were under attack you wouldn't use a torch to escape and give away your position. Plus I've never heard of anyone getting attacked during the night anyhow, have you?
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors Год назад
Hey, yes the idea IS mainly as a security blanket. I HAVE heard of people being crept up on in the night and it does happen, but its rare.

Used the same for a few years now, you may like to coat the insides with melted wax to prevent corrosion (leave battery contacts clean ofc) and winding some snipe round the outside to seal the unit. But yes, these are good audible alarms, I'm getting a couple more and seeing if I can swap the speaker for led lights, silent alarm if I don't want them knowing I'm aware of their presence.
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors Год назад
Wax, that's a great idea! Also on swopping the speaker for an LED providing the power supply is right. I may just have to look into those! I am really liking some of the feedback I get on this channel, can learn as much as I put out there!

Thank you for sharing this method, I actually like the poundage you are using, as, if a deer or animal large enough to snare itself in this system, there is a good chance it could remove itself without too much distress...plus as an alarm I can think of many uses other than camping where such a device could be very effective. 👍, I have watched several of your videos in a kind of 'binge' watch session, they are so well presented and practical . Thank you.

I think the trick is to have them out only as far out and ideally in places they can only be coming in your direction anyway.
@andrewmypocalypse
@andrewmypocalypse Год назад
These are becoming quite common and the probability an attacker might just look for these and pass under or over is rising. Plus, if triggered, they could wait for you to come out and attack you then. That said, I’ll definitely use these. I’d rather hope for the chance of a dumb, fearful attacker than having no hope at all.
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors Год назад
You would definitely need to be expecting these and have some skill/training to avoid at night. Its one of those where you lose nothing though, if somebody spotted it, you are no worse off than if you didn't have them.

I like that barrier. In the UK I'd guess most places you'd likely use this are in that legal grey. So I wonder if a land owner ran into this if it might be the difference between you being asked to leave immediately and being allowed to stay to morning. I honestly don't know myself but I think the barrier definitely has plausible deniability if you were using it to say dry a towel off "earlier in the evening".
@ConspiracyPundit
@ConspiracyPundit Год назад
If you have more time, dig bear drop all around your camp and place sharpened branches or purchase alloy spikes. Cover drop with thin branches twigs and finally leaves. Now if someone does drop, you can use your spade to quickly cover them over to eliminate sounds. Sorted, back to camp for a few drams and sleep.
@Yorkshiremadmick

Could not roaming deer or foxes set this off too?
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors Год назад
They could, I think its a balancing act between putting them out too far away where animals may not know you are there but you get more reaction time and too near where they will smell you and keep away, but it doesn't give you much time to react. According to my wife I snore, so I suspect that keeps them away from me! :)

Rubbing the line with a bit of your clothing or bare hands, being mindful to take your time, rather than slicing your hand open, usual deters animals, unless it's stretched across one of their regular runs, which are easy enough to spot, before sundown.

@@robertfuller1049 We're lucky, in Scotland, having public access to most land, whereas it's become more restrictive in England over recent years. I believe an ongoing case in Dartmoor, in England, will be interesting, as a camping organisation has found proof the landowner of a great swathe of the moors deliberately lied to the courts, when seeking for the current ban on camping to be applied, but I agree, I've camped solo and in groups for half a century and only ever been bothered by the occasional busybody, who usually leave you alone, once you invite them to contact the police or landowner for verification of the law. Hope your stay here is enjoyable.

A line of pyrotechnics might falsly indicate to an intruder there are lots of bods in your area
@billyandrew
@billyandrew Год назад
I leave my pyrotechnics slightly further back and wide of the trip wire, two to each wire. Magnesium powder in the mixture dazzles their eyes, too and, I'm told, makes it look like two individuals are closing on any intruders from different directions. Loud noise and intensely bright lights cause disorientation, even out in the open. Only tested it once with a couple of pals, was pleased at the result, so it's been my go-to, since.

If you're paranoid enough about being attacked while wild camping and feel the need to set a tripwires, don't camp! its not for you or choose a safer location. I solo camp all over the UK and have never had an issue.

Why not? Explain. Many people feel nervous in a dark forest at night, particularly if they haven't spent much time in one, for example, if they are from a city, which many, many people are. What is wrong with taking steps to make them feel more comfortable, particularly initially until they get accustomed to it?
@Countryboy071

I live in the countryside, I was bought up in the countryside. I've solo travelled and camped in lots of locations around the world, including game reserves in Africa. I personally do not use attack alarms. I can however, understand those who would benefit from these, after all, anything that encourages anyone, particularly young people to enjoy the outdoor life is definitely a good thing 👍
@dogdadoutdoors

You sir, have an evil mind. Effective, but evil! I can imagine that would work brilliantly, but would probably land you in a lot of legal trouble UK. We can't use anything that is bladed or pointed unless in self-defence. But we also can't carry anything for self-defence (only use what you happen to have and can justify carrying) As that is pre-planned for defence, I *think* it would be considered as an offensive weapon and if so, that attracts a minimum 6 months in jail. I can't condone it in the UK, but its a genius idea!
@billyandrew
@billyandrew Год назад
If I were to live somewhere that allowed such antics, I might be tempted to make my own fireworks, say, packed with 1mm ball bearings, set on a one or two second fuse, about chest or head height, but, luckily, our laws in the UK are quite strict, firstly requiring a pyrotechnic licence and also, as was pointed out, against anything construed to be a pre-emptive weapon. We are allowed to use reasonable force in defending ourselves, however, anything stronger is frowned upon. 😉😂
