DIY TurtleDog Hammock Stand

I'm a scout leader who began hammock camping last year. Once I got off the ground I don't want to go back. However, sometime we end up camping in a field were there are no trees. I made two of these this afternoon in about an hour and half. They were easy to make and work well! Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the video, a buddy and I have made this, works great...only thing I did different was to put rubber caps on the legs for any possible indoor hammocking that could happen. Also, i got some velcro straps to keep it all together when stored.

I made one of these recently, following this video, and it is perfect! Thanks! I cut the pole so that it is closer to 5 ft per section, I'm using an ENO double nest, the pins are put in to be spaced 10ft apart.

Thanks for this..... eno pretty much set the (outrageous) bar for their hammock stands @ 250.00 a piece. Building your own seems the only sensible way to go

is 4 feet to low I was thinking six feet would be good to make up with the extra hang

I'm building this right now...all the stuff is in the shop and I'm either starting it in the next 10 minutes or starting it tomorrow. Thanks for the cool build. I'm using a warbonnet blackbird hammock, so it'll be interesting to see if the 10 foot ridge pole will work or if I'll need to add another 5 feet.

Nice build. I've been thinking of building something like this for my yard. How level does the area have to be to set it up.

On your ridge pole, did you cut it in half then use the taper end to piece it back together to make it portable? I have seen other vids where the joined ends break and they welded it back together. Thanks for the vid.

This is a bit shorter than some I've seen used, however, it seems better for compact carry in a vehicle as well. What was your total cost for parts used?

Just wondering and will be trying in the next few days, what would happen if you were to take on the hinge side (piece attached to one 2x2) use eye bolt for top bolt and curve the top with a router. Then attach 2 more hinges on the other two ~2 ft from bottom with a 2 ft 2x2 that has been 45ed where it would flip down into the dirt. Rotate so the eye bolts are away from each then attaching the hammock. Would the "stakes" with the force of the downward pull on the eye bolts keep from tipping it? (this is to eliminate the cross poll.

I just attempted my first TurtleDog stand, and I found this video. I like these dimensions as it would fit in my car easily for weekend trips. Do you have any issues with the legs wanting to collapse inward? My current stand keeps wanting to fall down every time I get out of it, and sometimes when I get into it.

How much weight would this support? kids like to pile on together.

how did you secure the pole to the top tripods? or are they just sitting on top?

The 10 foot pole won't fit in your car. How about cutting the pole to 5 feet lengths to allow breakdown for fitting in the car. Also the most comfortable hammock length is 11 ft. It seems you would need to have a longer pole length for that. And I believe the longer more comfortable hammocks would need to be hung higher than possible with 4 ft tripod legs.

Some hang the cross bar, this is the first I saw of it on top of the tripods. Reasons?

Does the top rail just sit on top or is there something that keeps it from sliding head to tail?

Thanks for the video. Have you used this set-up much outdoors and if so have you run into any "issues" using it, e.g. clearance under the hammock, setting a tarp over it, etc.? Also, is there any particular reason you used the hitch pins? Couldn't you just slip the loop in the suspension around the end of the pole and use a bolt through the pole to stop the loop from sliding in toward the middle?

Do you need the bar on top? Could I just use the tripods? Could I replace it with a steel wire?

I showed my husband this video and he made me one.. But when i sit on it is all good, but once you trying to get out the whole thing galls on you and the legs spread apart!!

Any reason you went with T-nuts over regular nut with a longer bolt?
